    Rethinking sport, empire, and American exceptionalism

    This article examines the correlation between sports history and American imperialism and exceptionalism. More specifically, the author argues against a view of sport historiography which excludes debates within social and cultural history. It is the author's suggestion that established themes in sports historiography, when considered within the context of American imperialism, can expand the understanding of American sports within global history, in effect, allowing sports historians to generate effective cross-cultural analysis. Particular focus is given by the author to the emphasis on how historical generalizations and anecdotes establish imperialism in the sporting history of America

    Anchoring historical sequences using a new source of astro-chronological tie-points

    The discovery of past spikes in atmospheric radiocarbon activity, caused by major solar energetic particle events, has opened up new possibilities for high-precision chronometry. The two spikes, or Miyake Events, have now been widely identified in tree-rings that grew in the years 775 and 994 CE. Furthermore, all other plant material that grew in these years would also have incorporated the anomalously high concentrations of radiocarbon. Crucially, some plant-based artefacts, such as papyrus documents, timber beams and linen garments, can also be allocated to specific positions within long, currently unfixed, historical sequences. Thus, Miyake Events represent a new source of tie-points that could provide the means for anchoring early chronologies to the absolute timescale.     General Kerr-NUT-AdS Metrics in All Dimensions

    The Kerr-AdS metric in dimension D has cohomogeneity [D/2]; the metric components depend on the radial coordinate r and [D/2] latitude variables \mu_i that are subject to the constraint \sum_i \mu_i^2=1. We find a coordinate reparameterisation in which the \mu_i variables are replaced by [D/2]-1 unconstrained coordinates y_\alpha, and having the remarkable property that the Kerr-AdS metric becomes diagonal in the coordinate differentials dy_\alpha. The coordinates r and y_\alpha now appear in a very symmetrical way in the metric, leading to an immediate generalisation in which we can introduce [D/2]-1 NUT parameters. We find that (D-5)/2 are non-trivial in odd dimensions, whilst (D-2)/2 are non-trivial in even dimensions. This gives the most general Kerr-NUT-AdS metric in DD dimensions. We find that in all dimensions D\ge4 there exist discrete symmetries that involve inverting a rotation parameter through the AdS radius. These symmetries imply that Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics with over-rotating parameters are equivalent to under-rotating metrics. We also consider the BPS limit of the Kerr-NUT-AdS metrics, and thereby obtain, in odd dimensions and after Euclideanisation, new families of Einstein-Sasaki metrics.Comment: Latex, 24 pages, minor typos correcte

    A Killing tensor for higher dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes with NUT charge

    In this paper, we study the recently discovered family of higher dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes with an extra NUT-like parameter. We show that the inverse metric is additively separable after multiplication by a simple function. This allows us to separate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, showing that geodesic motion is integrable on this background. The separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is intimately linked to the existence of an irreducible Killing tensor, which provides an extra constant of motion.     Compactifications of Deformed Conifolds, Branes and the Geometry of Qubits

    We present three families of exact, cohomogeneity-one Einstein metrics in (2n+2)(2n+2) dimensions, which are generalizations of the Stenzel construction of Ricci-flat metrics to those with a positive cosmological constant. The first family of solutions are Fubini-Study metrics on the complex projective spaces CPn+1CP^{n+1}, written in a Stenzel form, whose principal orbits are the Stiefel manifolds V2(Rn+2)=SO(n+2)/SO(n)V_2(R ^{n+2})=SO(n+2)/SO(n) divided by Z2Z_2. The second family are also Einstein-K\"ahler metrics, now on the Grassmannian manifolds G2(Rn+3)=SO(n+3)/((SO(n+1)×SO(2))G_2(R^{n+3})=SO(n+3)/((SO(n+1)\times SO(2)), whose principal orbits are the Stiefel manifolds V2(Rn+2)V_2(R^{n+2}) (with no Z2Z_2 factoring in this case). The third family are Einstein metrics on the product manifolds Sn+1×Sn+1S^{n+1}\times S^{n+1}, and are K\"ahler only for n=1n=1. Some of these metrics are believed to play a role in studies of consistent string theory compactifications and in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We also elaborate on the geometric approach to quantum mechanics based on the K\"ahler geometry of Fubini-Study metrics on CPn+1CP^{n+1}, and we apply the formalism to study the quantum entanglement of qubits.Comment: 31 page

    Higher-spin Realisations of the Bosonic String

    It has been shown that certain WW algebras can be linearised by the inclusion of a spin--1 current. This provides a way of obtaining new realisations of the WW algebras. Recently such new realisations of W3W_3 were used in order to embed the bosonic string in the critical and non-critical W3W_3 strings. In this paper, we consider similar embeddings in W2,4W_{2,4} and W2,6W_{2,6} strings. The linearisation of W2,4W_{2,4} is already known, and can be achieved for all values of central charge. We use this to embed the bosonic string in critical and non-critical W2,4W_{2,4} strings. We then derive the linearisation of W2,6W_{2,6} using a spin--1 current, which turns out to be possible only at central charge c=390c=390. We use this to embed the bosonic string in a non-critical W2,6W_{2,6} string.Comment: 8 pages. CTP TAMU-10/95

    Thermodynamics of Magnetised Kerr-Newman Black Holes

    The thermodynamics of a magnetised Kerr-Newman black hole is studied to all orders in the appended magnetic field BB. The asymptotic properties of the metric and other fields are dominated by the magnetic flux that extends to infinity along the axis, leading to subtleties in the calculation of conserved quantities such as the angular momentum and the mass. We present a detailed discussion of the implementation of a Wald-type procedure to calculate the angular momentum, showing how ambiguities that are absent in the usual asymptotically-flat case may be resolved by the requirement of gauge invariance. We also present a formalism from which we are able to obtain an expression for the mass of the magnetised black holes. The expressions for the mass and the angular momentum are shown to be compatible with the first law of thermodynamics and a Smarr type relation. Allowing the appended magnetic field BB to vary results in an extra term in the first law of the form −ΌdB-\mu dB where ÎŒ\mu is interpreted as an induced magnetic moment. Minimising the total energy with respect to the total charge QQ at fixed values of the angular momentum and energy of the seed metric allows an investigation of Wald's process. The Meissner effect is shown to hold for electrically neutral extreme black holes. We also present a derivation of the angular momentum for black holes in the four-dimensional STU model, which is N=2{\cal N}=2 supergravity coupled to three vector multiplets.Comment: 27 page
