[EN] Gas dynamic codes are computational tools applied to the analysis of air management in internal combustion engines. The governing equations in one-dimensional elements are approached assuming compressible unsteady non-homentropic flow and are commonly solved applying finite difference numerical methods. These techniques can also be applied to the calculation of flow transport in complex systems such as wallflow monoliths. These elements are characterized by alternatively plugged channels with porous walls. It filters the particulates when the flowgoes through thewall from the inlet to the outlet channels. Therefore, this process couples the solution of every pair of inlet and outlet channels. In this study, the adaptation of the two-step Lax and Wendroff method and the space-time Conservation Element and Solution Element method is performed to be applied in the solution of flow transport in wall-flow monolith channels. The influence on the prediction ability is analysed by a shock-tube test and experimental data obtained under impulsive flow conditions. This work has been partially supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion through grant number DPI2010-20891-C02-02.Serrano, JR.; Arnau Martínez, FJ.; Piqueras, P.; García Afonso, Ó. A new model for magnetoreception

Certain migratory birds can sense the earth's magnetic field. The nature of this process is not yet properly understood. Here we offer a simple explanation according to which birds literally `see' the local magnetic field: Our model relates the well-established radical pair hypothesis to the phenomenon of Haidinger's brush, a capacity to see the polarisation of light. This new picture explains recent surprising experimental data indicating long lifetimes for the radical pair. Moreover there is a clear evolutionary path toward this field sensing mechanism: it is an enhancement of a weak effect that may be present in many species.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, version of final published pape

    Traffic Stripe Removal

During the past several years, much attention has been directed toward the acceptable removal of obsolete pavement markings. There are a number of methods available for marking removal including chemical paint removers, sandblasting, high pressure water jet, grinding, hydroblasting and high temperature burning. Most of these methods have been used with some degree of success by State highway agencies. However, no one method appears to be superior for use under all conditions. The subject report is a summary of the available information on the methods to remove unwanted pavement markings. The report includes a brief description, and a discussion concerning the effectiveness, problems, and limitations of each method. Average costs for removal are also included

Guidelines for Slope Maintenance and Slide Restoration

    Get PDF
As part of a continuing project to evaluate and improve maintenance activities a study on slope maintenance and slide restoration was undertaken. The problem of slope maintenance and slide restoration was identified by a number of States as a major maintenance problem involving a considerable expenditure of maintenance funds. These guidelines are divided into five chapters: (1) slide identification and definition of terms, (2) investigation and inspection of critical slopes and drainage, (3) maintenance activities that will aid in the prevention and minimization of slides, (4) maintenance activities that are related to particular distress items, and (5) repair and restoration techniques including relative cost information. The guidelines reflect the collective experience of the six participating States and are designed for use by the first level maintenance supervisor, the person responsible for scheduling day-to-day maintenance work

Analysis of pmpD Expression and PmpD Post-Translational Processing during the Life Cycle of Chlamydia trachomatis Serovars A, D, and L2

BACKGROUND: The polymorphic membrane protein D (PmpD) in Chlamydia is structurally similar to autotransporter proteins described in other bacteria and may be involved in cellular and humoral protective immunity against Chlamydia. The mechanism of PmpD post-translational processing and the role of its protein products in the pathogenesis of chlamydial infection have not been very well elucidated to date. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we examined the expression and post-translational processing of the protein product of the pmpD gene during the life cycle of C. trachomatis serovars A, D, and L2. Each of these three serovars targets different human organs and tissues and encodes a different pmpD gene nucleotide sequence. Our quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction results demonstrate that the pmpD gene is up-regulated at 12-24 hours after infection regardless of the Chlamydia serovar. This up-regulation is coincidental with the period of exponential growth and replication of reticulate bodies (RB) of Chlamydia and indicates a probable similarity in function of pmpD in serovars A, D, and L2 of Chlamydia. Using mass spectrometry analysis, we identified the protein products of post-translational processing of PmpD of C. trachomatis serovar L2 and propose a double pathway model for PmpD processing, with one cleavage site between the passenger and autotransporter domains and the other site in the middle of the passenger domain. Notably, when Chlamydia infected culture cells were subjected to low (28 degrees C) temperature, PmpD post-translational processing and secretion was found to be uninhibited in the resulting persistent infection. In addition, confocal microscopy of cells infected with Chlamydia confirms our earlier hypothesis that PmpD is secreted outside Chlamydia and its secretion increases with growth of the chlamydial inclusion. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The results of this current study involving multiple Chlamydia serovars support the general consensus that the pmpD gene is maximally expressed at mid infection and provide new information about PmpD as an autotransporter protein which is post-translationally processed and secreted outside Chlamydia during normal and low temperature induced persistent chlamydial infection

CD8+ T Cells Mediate the Athero-Protective Effect of Immunization with an ApoB-100 Peptide

Immunization of hypercholesterolemic mice with selected apoB-100 peptide antigens reduces atherosclerosis but the precise immune mediators of athero-protection remain unclear. In this study we show that immunization of apoE (-/-) mice with p210, a 20 amino acid apoB-100 related peptide, reduced aortic atherosclerosis compared with PBS or adjuvant/carrier controls. Immunization with p210 activated CD8+ T cells, reduced dendritic cells (DC) at the site of immunization and within the plaque with an associated reduction in plaque macrophage immunoreactivity. Adoptive transfer of CD8+ T cells from p210 immunized mice recapitulated the athero-protective effect of p210 immunization in naïve, non-immunized mice. CD8+ T cells from p210 immunized mice developed a preferentially higher cytolytic response against p210-loaded dendritic cells in vitro. Although p210 immunization profoundly modulated DCs and cellular immune responses, it did not alter the efficacy of subsequent T cell dependent or independent immune response to other irrelevant antigens. Our data define, for the first time, a role for CD8+ T cells in mediating the athero-protective effects of apoB-100 related peptide immunization in apoE (-/-) mice

Observations of DG Tauri with the Keck Interferometer

We present the first science results from the Keck Interferometer, a direct-detection infrared interferometer utilizing the two 10-meter Keck telescopes. The instrument and system components are briefly described. We then present observations of the T Tauri object DG Tau, which is resolved by the interferometer. The resolved component has a radius of 0.12 to 0.24 AU, depending on the assumed stellar and extended component fluxes and the model geometry used. Possible origins and implications of the resolved emission are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to appear in ApJ Letter

Porphyromonas gingivalis–dendritic cell interactions: consequences for coronary artery disease

    Get PDF
An estimated 80 million US adults have one or more types of cardiovascular diseases. Atherosclerosis is the single most important contributor to cardiovascular diseases; however, only 50% of atherosclerosis patients have currently identified risk factors. Chronic periodontitis, a common inflammatory disease, is linked to an increased cardiovascular risk. Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen presenting cells that infiltrate arterial walls and may destabilize atherosclerotic plaques in cardiovascular disease. While the source of these DCs in atherosclerotic plaques is presently unclear, we propose that dermal DCs from peripheral inflamed sites such as CP tissues are a potential source. This review will examine the role of the opportunistic oral pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis in invading DCs and stimulating their mobilization and misdirection through the bloodstream. Based on our published observations, combined with some new data, as well as a focused review of the literature we will propose a model for how P. gingivalis may exploit DCs to gain access to systemic circulation and contribute to coronary artery disease. Our published evidence supports a significant role for P. gingivalis in subverting normal DC function, promoting a semimature, highly migratory, and immunosuppressive DC phenotype that contributes to the inflammatory development of atherosclerosis and, eventually, plaque rupture
