Dynamics of strong and radiative decays of Ds mesons
The positive parity scalar D(2317) and axial-vector D(2460)
charmed strange mesons are generated by coupled-channel dynamics through the
s-wave scattering of Goldstone bosons off the pseudoscalar and vector
D(D)-meson ground states. The attraction leading to the specific masses of
these states reflects the chiral symmetry breaking scale which characterizes
the Weinberg-Tomozawa interaction in the chiral Lagrangian. Chiral corrections
to order Q are calculated and found to be small. The D(2317)
and D(2460) mesons decay either strongly into the isospin-violating
D and D channels or electromagnetically. We show that
the - and (KD-KD) mixings act constructively to
generate strong widths of the order of 140 keV. The one-loop contribution to
the radiative decay amplitudes of scalar and axial-vector states is calculated
using the electromagnetic Lagrangian to chiral order Q. We show the
importance of taking into account processes involving light vector mesons
explicitly in the dynamics of electromagnetic decays to obtain a satisfactory

The Language of Our Dreams : James Baldwin\u27s Project of Identity Formation on Paper and Film
While James Baldwin is best known for his written works, he also had a compelling screen presence as the subject of multiple documentary films. Using previously unreleased video and audio recordings from the Sedat Pakay Collection at the Yale Film Archive, this essay argues that Baldwin’s appearances on film can provide unique insights into his lifelong process of identity formation. It looks closely at several key moments in the short documentary films “Meeting the Man” (1970), directed by Terence Dixon in Paris, and “From Another Place” (1973), directed by Sedat Pakay MFA ’68 in Istanbul, exploring themes of exile, race, and what it means to bear witness
Is there a close association between "soils" and "vegetation"? : A case study from central western New South Wales
The assumption that ‘soils’ and ‘vegetation’ are closely associated was tested by describing soils and vegetation along a Travelling Stock Reserve west of Grenfell, New South Wales (lat 33° 55’S, long 147° 45’E). The transect was selected on the basis of (a) minimising the effects of non-soil factors (human interference, climate and relief) on vegetation and (b) the presence of various soil and vegetation types as indicated by previous mapping. ‘Soils’ were considered at three levels: soil landscapes (a broad mapping unit widely used in central western NSW), soil types (according to a range of classifications) and soil properties (depth, pH, etc.). ‘Vegetation’ was considered in three ways: vegetation type (in various classifications), density/floristic indices (density of woody species, abundance of native species, etc.) and presence/absence of individual species. Sites along the transect were grouped according to soil landscapes or soil types and compared to vegetation types or indices recorded at the sites. Various measures indicated low associations between vegetation types and soil landscapes or soil types. Except for infrequent occurrences of a soil type or landscape, any one soil type or landscape was commonly associated with a number of vegetation types and any one vegetation type was associated with a number of soil landscapes or soil types. However, significant associations between some vegetation indices, mainly density or numbers of woody species, and some soil landscapes and soil types were evident. Although many species were relatively ubiquitous, some groups of species that were restricted to one or two soil types were identified. Canonical Correspondence Analysis provided some suggestions as to which properties (e.g. texture) of these soils were associated with the presence of particular species
Barbell back squat:How do resistance bands affect muscle activation and knee kinematics?
ObjectivesThis study aimed to determine whether looped resistance bands affect knee kinematics and lower body muscle activation during the barbell back squat.MethodsTwenty-six healthy participants (13 female, 13 male) calculated their one repetition maximum (RM) prior to data collection. Each participant performed three squats at both 80% and 40% 1RM wearing a light resistance band, an extra-heavy resistance band and no resistance band.Vicon 3D motion analysis cameras were used to collect the kinematic data, and Delsys Trigno Lab wireless electromyography (EMG) system was used to measure vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and biceps femoris muscle activity. Peak knee flexion angle, peak knee valgus angle and maximum tibial rotation values were examined. Peak EMG values were also analysed after being normalised and expressed as a percentage of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC).ResultsGluteus maximus (GM) activity is significantly increased when a resistance band is used during squatting. However, squatting with a resistance band is detrimental to knee kinematics as it leads to an increase in knee valgus angle and maximum tibial rotation angle. A direct correlation is recorded between an increase in resistance and an increase in these two angles.ConclusionsSquatting with resistance bands is likely to increase the risk of knee injury. Coaches and clinicians who already implement this technique are advised to remove resistance band squats from training and rehabilitation programmes. Further research evaluating the long-term effects of using resistance bands during the barbell back squat should be considered
Perceptual bias, more than age, impacts on eye movements during face processing
Consistent with the right hemispheric dominance for face processing, a left perceptual bias (LPB) is typically demonstrated by younger adults viewing faces and a left eye movement bias has also been revealed. Hemispheric asymmetry is predicted to reduce with age and older adults have demonstrated a weaker LPB, particularly when viewing time is restricted. What is currently unclear is whether age also weakens the left eye movement bias. Additionally, a right perceptual bias (RPB) for facial judgments has less frequently been demonstrated, but whether this is accompanied by a right eye movement bias has not been investigated. To address these issues older and younger adults’ eye movements and gender judgments of chimeric faces were recorded in two time conditions. Age did not significantly weaken the LPB or eye movement bias; both groups looked initially to the left side of the face and made more fixations when the gender judgment was based on the left side. A positive association was found between LPB and initial saccades in the freeview condition and with all eye movements (initial saccades, number and duration of fixations) when time was restricted. The accompanying eye movement bias revealed by LPB participants contrasted with RPB participants who demonstrated no eye movement bias in either time condition. Consequently, increased age is not clearly associated with weakened perceptual and eye movement biases. Instead an eye movement bias accompanies an LPB (particularly under restricted viewing time conditions) but not an RPB
More Than a One-Trick Pony: Exploring the Contours of a Multi-Sector Covener
Today\u27s managers must find ways to identify and sustain productive relationships within multi-sector collaborative arrangements. This paper explores empirically the activities of a convener based on tasks identified by Agranoff and McGuire (2001) and applies this framework to the case of Virginia\u27s Coastal Zone Management Program (VCZMP). We find that the convener displays characteristics described by Agranoff and McGuire, as well as characteristics of traditional hierarchical managers. This research suggests that both sets of skills are necessary for effective multi-sector collaborative governance

Rhenium elemental and isotopic variations at magmatic temperatures
Recent analytical advances in the measurement of rhenium (Re) isotope ratios allow its potential as a palaeoredox and chemical weathering proxy to be explored. However, a successful isotopic proxy must be grounded by an understanding of its composition and behaviour in the solid Earth. Here, we present Re concentrations and Re isotopic (δ187Re) compositions for a well-characterised sequence of lavas from Hekla volcano, Iceland. The concentration of Re varies from 0.02 to 1.4 ng/g, decreasing from basalt to more evolved lavas. We show that the crystallisation and removal of magnetite is responsible for the Re decrease in this system. By contrast, δ187Re values for the same suite of samples show a relatively narrow range (−0.45 to −0.22 ‰), suggesting minimal resolvable Re isotope fractionation between magnetite and the silicate melt. Together with other samples, including mid-ocean ridge basalts, these first igneous data can be used to estimate a baseline for terrestrial materials (δ187Re = −0.33 ± 0.15 ‰, 2 s.d., n = 14), from which low-temperature Re isotope variations in Earth’s surficial environments can be assessed, alongside the global isotope mass balance of Re
