    DC field induced enhancement and inhibition of spontaneous emission in a cavity

    Importance of an Astrophysical Perspective for Textbook Relativity

    The importance of a teaching a clear definition of the ``observer'' in special relativity is highlighted using a simple astrophysical example from the exciting current research area of ``Gamma-Ray Burst'' astrophysics. The example shows that a source moving relativistically toward a single observer at rest exhibits a time ``contraction'' rather than a ``dilation'' because the light travel time between the source and observer decreases with time.     High-fat meals rich in EPA plus DHA compared with DHA only have differential effects on postprandial lipemia and plasma 8-isoprostane F-2 alpha concentrations relative to a control high-oleic acid meal: a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplementation has beneficial cardiovascular effects, but postprandial influences of these individual fatty acids are unclear. Objectives: The primary objective was to determine the vascular effects of EPA + DHA compared with DHA only during postprandial lipemia relative to control high–oleic acid meals; the secondary objective was to characterize the effects of linoleic acid–enriched high-fat meals relative to the control meal. Design: We conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blind crossover trial of 4 high-fat (75-g) meals containing 1) high–oleic acid sunflower oil (HOS; control), 2) HOS + fish oil (FO; 5 g EPA and DHA), 3) HOS + algal oil (AO; 5 g DHA), and 4) high–linoleic acid sunflower oil (HLS) in 16 healthy men (aged 35–70 y) with higher than optimal fasting triacylglycerol concentrations (mean ± SD triacylglycerol, 1.9 ± 0.5 mmol/L). Results: Elevations in triacylglycerol concentration relative to baseline were slightly reduced after FO and HLS compared with the HOS control (P < 0.05). The characteristic decrease from baseline in plasma nonesterified fatty acids after a mixed meal was inhibited after AO (Δ 0–3 h, P < 0.05). HLS increased the augmentation index compared with the other test meals (P < 0.05), although the digital volume pulse–reflection index was not significantly different. Plasma 8-isoprostane F(2α) analysis revealed opposing effects of FO (increased) and AO (reduced) compared with the control (P < 0.05). No differences in nitric oxide metabolites were observed. Conclusions: These data show differential postprandial 8-isoprostane F(2α) responses to high-fat meals containing EPA + DHA–rich fish oil compared with DHA-rich AO, but these differences were not associated with consistent effects on postprandial vascular function or lipemia. More detailed analyses of polyunsaturated fatty acid–derived lipid mediators are required to determine possible divergent functional effects of single meals rich in either DHA or EPA.     Alternative Dissolution Methods for Analysis of Niobium containing Samples

    Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry was applied for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the different high purity Nb containing samples such as Nb metal, Nb2O5 and NbF5. Microwave-assisted digestion of the Nb compounds with concentrated H2SO4 in PTFE vessels produced Nb recoveries of 99.90 ± 0.08 % for Nb metal, 98.8 ± 0.7 % for Nb2O5 and 100.7±0.4%for NbF5. Fusion of Nb2O5 with Li2B4O7 flux and the subsequent dissolution of the melt with concentrated H2SO4 resulted in the precipitation of H3BO3 under these conditions. Methanol was added to the reaction mixture to convert the boric acid into the volatile methyl ester in an effort to remove the excess H3BO3.     Electromagnetic Transition in Waveguide with Application to Lasers

    The electromagnetic transition of two-level atomic systems in a waveguide is calculated. Compared with the result in free space, the spontaneous emission rate decrease because the phase space is smaller, and meanwhile, some resonance appears in some cases. Moreover, the influence of non-uniform electromagnetic field in a waveguide on absorption and stimulated emission is considered.     OSSE observations of galactic 511 keV annihilation radiation

    The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory has performed several observations of the galactic plane and galactic center region to measure the distribution of galactic 511 keV positron annihilation radiation. Preliminary analysis of data collected during the observation of the galactic center region over the period 13-24 Jun. 1991, indicates the presence of a 511 keV line and positronium continuum superimposed on a power-law continuum. The line of flux was found to be (2.7 +/- 0.5) x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec, with a positronium fraction of (0.9 +/- 0.2). The 3(sigma) upper limit to daily variations in the 511 keV line flux from the mean during the observation interval is 3 x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec. If all of the observed annihilation radiation is assumed to originate from the x-ray source 1E 1740.7-2942, the corresponding 511 keV line flux would be (3.0 +/- 0.6) x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec. The 3(sigma) upper limit for 511 keV line emission from the x-ray binary GX1+4 is 6 x 10(exp -4) gamma/sq cm sec. Results from the galactic plane observations at galactic longitudes of 25 degrees (16-21 Aug. 1991) and 339 degrees (6-11 Sep. 1991) suggest that the emission is concentrated near the galactic center.     Giant Optical Non-linearity induced by a Single Two-Level System interacting with a Cavity in the Purcell Regime

    A two-level system that is coupled to a high-finesse cavity in the Purcell regime exhibits a giant optical non-linearity due to the saturation of the two-level system at very low intensities, of the order of one photon per lifetime. We perform a detailed analysis of this effect, taking into account the most important practical imperfections. Our conclusion is that an experimental demonstration of the giant non-linearity should be feasible using semiconductor micropillar cavities containing a single quantum dot in resonance with the cavity mode.Comment: 40 pages, 16 figures, accepted in Phys.     Dissolution and Quantification of Tantalum-Containing Compounds: Comparison with Niobium

    Dissolution and quantification of different tantalum compounds was undertaken as part of the development of local processes for the beneficiation and separation of tantalum and niobium from different mineral ores. Dissolution of Ta metal powder, TAN-1 CRM, TaF5, TaCl5 and Ta2O5 was undertaken with different acid, alkaline fluxes as well as with microwave digestion while quantification was performed using ICP-OES analysis. The success of the different dissolution methods was evaluated on percentage recovery basis, the results discussed and finally compared with those obtained from the corresponding niobium compounds. Quantification results obtained from this study clearly indicated that the percentage recovery of tantalum depended on i) the type of tantalum source and ii) the dissolution process of the different tantalum compounds. Excellent recoveries were obtained with water soluble TaF5 and TaCl5 with 101(1) and 100(2)% respectively. Low tantalum recovery was obtained for Ta metal and Ta2O5 with microwave digestion in the presence of strong acids (4.1(8) and 9.7(8) %, respectively in the presence of H2SO4) and acidic fluxes (1.5(5) % with K2S2O7). Improved recoveries were obtained using basic fluxes for both the metal and the oxide. Fluxing the metal with KOH resulted in a 85(3) % Ta recovery while a maximum of 68(4) % Ta recovery was obtained for Ta2O5. Tantalum recoveries of between 75(10) and 90(6)% were obtained for TAN-1 CRM (Ta present as Ta2O5) and 95(6)% for Ta2O5 with Li2B4O7 as fluxing agent on the removal of the excess of boric acid prior to analysis. A stability study indicated constant recovery in a basic medium while a decrease of up to 10 % in tantalum recovery was obtained in an acidic environment. A comparison with the niobium results obtained in a previous study highlighted the different acid/base properties of the two oxides as well as a possible alternative dissolution/ separation step for the two elements from the mineral ore.Keywords: Dissolution, microwave, fluxes, tantalum, recover
