Atmospheric cloud physics laboratory project study
Engineering studies were performed for the Zero-G Cloud Physics Experiment liquid cooling and air pressure control systems. A total of four concepts for the liquid cooling system was evaluated, two of which were found to closely approach the systems requirements. Thermal insulation requirements, system hardware, and control sensor locations were established. The reservoir sizes and initial temperatures were defined as well as system power requirements. In the study of the pressure control system, fluid analyses by the Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory were performed to determine flow characteristics of various orifice sizes, vacuum pump adequacy, and control systems performance. System parameters predicted in these analyses as a function of time include the following for various orifice sizes: (1) chamber and vacuum pump mass flow rates, (2) the number of valve openings or closures, (3) the maximum cloud chamber pressure deviation from the allowable, and (4) cloud chamber and accumulator pressure
The Effects of JIT on the Development of Productivity Norms
Low inventory, or just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing systems, enjoy increasing application worldwide, yet the behavioral effects of such systems remain largely unexplored. Operations Research (OR) models of low inventory systems typically make a simplifying assumption that individual worker processing times are independent random variables. This leads to predictions that low-inventory systems will exhibit production interruptions. Yet empirical results suggest that low-inventory systems do not exhibit the predicted productivity losses. This paper develops a model integrating feedback, goal-setting, group cohesiveness, task norms, and peer pressure to predict how individual behavior may adjust to alleviate production interruptions in low-inventory systems. In doing so we integrate previous research on the development of task norms. Findings suggest that low-inventory systems induce individual and group responses that cause behavioral changes that mitigate production interruptions

The trigonometric vertex model with {\it generic
non-diagonal} boundaries is studied. The double-row transfer matrix of the
model is diagonalized by algebraic Bethe ansatz method in terms of the
intertwiner and the corresponding face-vertex relation. The eigenvalues and the

Stability of the replica symmetric solution for the information conveyed by by a neural network
The information that a pattern of firing in the output layer of a feedforward
network of threshold-linear neurons conveys about the network's inputs is
considered. A replica-symmetric solution is found to be stable for all but
small amounts of noise. The region of instability depends on the contribution
of the threshold and the sparseness: for distributed pattern distributions, the
unstable region extends to higher noise variances than for very sparse

Buildings behaving badly:A behavioral experiment on how different motivational frames influence residential energy label adoption in the Netherlands
Heating buildings contributes to approximately 36% of Europe’s energy demand and several EU member states have adopted mandatory energy labels to improve energy efficiency by promoting home weatherization investments. This paper focuses on the perception of the energy label for residential buildings in the Netherlands and the role of different frames (egoistic, biospheric and social norms and neutral frames) in motivating adoption of energy labels for housing. We used a behavioral email experiment and an online survey to investigate these motivational factors. We find that biospheric frames are weaker than the other three motivational frames in terms of engaging interest in the energy label, but that the biospheric frame results in higher willingness to pay (WTP) for the energy label. We also find that age (rather than income) correlates with higher willingness to pay for home energy labels
Interacting Electrons on a Square Fermi Surface
Electronic states near a square Fermi surface are mapped onto quantum chains.
Using boson-fermion duality on the chains, the bosonic part of the interaction
is isolated and diagonalized. These interactions destroy Fermi liquid behavior.
Non-boson interactions are also generated by this mapping, and give rise to a
new perturbation theory about the boson problem. A case with strong repulsions
between parallel faces is studied and solved. There is spin-charge separation
and the square Fermi surface remains square under doping. At half-filling,
there is a charge gap and insulating behavior together with gapless spin
excitations. This mapping appears to be a general tool for understanding the
properties of interacting electrons on a square Fermi surface.Comment: 25 pages, Nordita preprint 94/22
Cool Companions to White Dwarfs from the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release
We present near-infrared magnitudes for all white dwarfs (selected from the
catalog of McCook & Sion) contained in the 2 Micron All Sky Survey Second
Incremental Data Release(2MASS 2IDR). We show that the near-IR color-color
diagram is an effective means of identifying candidate binary stars containing
a WD and a low mass main sequence star. The loci of single WDs and WD + red
dwarf binaries occupy distinct regions of the near-IR color-color diagram. We
recovered all known unresolved WD + red dwarf binaries located in the 2IDR sky
coverage, and also identified as many new candidate binaries (47 new candidates
out of 95 total). Using observational near-IR data for WDs and M-L dwarfs, we
have compared a sample of simulated WD + red dwarf binaries with our 2MASS
data. The colors of the simulated binaries are dominated by the low mass
companion through the late-M to early-L spectral types. As the spectral type of
the companion becomes progressively later, however, the colors of unresolved
binaries become progressively bluer. Binaries containing the lowest mass
companions will be difficult to distinguish from single WDs solely on the basis
