    Cutout reinforcements for shear loaded laminate and sandwich composite panels

    This paper presents the numerical and experimental studies of shear loaded laminated and sandwich carbon/epoxy composite panels with cutouts and reinforcements aiming at reducing the cutout stress concentration and increasing the buckling stability of the panels. The effect of different cutout sizes and the design and materials of cutout reinforcements on the stress and buckling behaviour of the panels are evaluated. For the sandwich panels with a range of cutout size and a constant weight, an optimal ratio of the core to the face thickness has been studied for the maximum buckling stability. The finite element method and an analytical method are employed to perform parametric studies. In both constant stress and constant displacement shear loading conditions, the results are in very good agreement with those obtained from experiment for selected cutout reinforcement cases.     Pancreas transplantation for diabetic patients in Hawaii.

    Diabetes mellitus is a common disease affecting a large population in Hawaii. Over the past 20 years, pancreas transplantation has evolved into a viable therapeutic option for selected patients with diabetes mellitus. This report describes the first combined pancreas-kidney transplant performed in Hawaii on June 28, 1993 on a patient with juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus and diabetic nephropathy. The patient has remained off insulin and off dialysis since the transplant. The history, indications, techniques, and potential complications related to this procedure are discussed

    Structure of a liquid crystalline fluid around a macroparticle: Density functional theory study

    The structure of a molecular liquid, in both the nematic liquid crystalline and isotropic phases, around a cylindrical macroparticle, is studied using density functional theory. In the nematic phase the structure of the fluid is highly anisotropic with respect to the director, in agreement with results from simulation and phenomenological theories. On going into the isotropic phase the structure becomes rotationally invariant around the macroparticle with an oriented layer at the surface.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figues. Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Laser surface colouring of titanium for contemporary jewellery

    This paper describes work which emerged through a need to understand more about the potential of laser surface engineering for use in the creative industries. The method of creation of contemporary jewellery pieces and the resultant 'Ocular' jewellery series are described from the creative point of view. The work demonstrates how laser controlled oxide growth on Ti–6Al–4V alloy under ambient conditions can be used as an artistic tool by producing precisely defined colours. Use of the method to produce regular areas of even colour and to reproduce freehand drawings on a titanium alloy surface is described. Analysis highlights interference as the main colouring mechanism and suggests a graded surface layer, progressing from an outer layer of TiO2 to lower layers rich in TiO and Ti2O. The model of research by practice presented in this paper offers a contribution to the current debate on partnerships between art and science and engineering

    Dual-band MIMO antenna using double-T structure for WLAN applications

The antenna consists of two double-T monopole elements with microstrip-fed and symmetrically placed on a substrate. To enhance isolation between the two monopole elements, three slots are cut on the ground plane on the other side of the substrate. The longer slot is used for better isolation in the 2.4-GHz band, while the two shorter slots are used for the 5.2-GHz band. Simulation and measurement are used to study the antenna performance in terms of S parameters, radiation patterns, realized gain, efficiency, and envelope correlation coefficient. Results show that the MIMO antenna has the two operation bands of 2.20-2.75 GHz and 5.09-5.50 GHz with mutual coupling of less than -15 dB and envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.1, making it a good candidate for WLAN applications.published_or_final_versio

    Bioenergetic influence on the historical development and decline of industrial fisheries

Historical records for individual large marine ecosystems (LMEs) tend to echo this same progression, but with local variations in the timing and abruptness of catch peaks. Here, we provide objective descriptions of these catch peaks, which generally progressed from high- to low-latitude LMEs, and attribute the temporal progression to a combination of economic and ecological factors. We show that the ecological factors can be remarkably strong by using a spatially resolved, observationally-constrained, coupled macroecological-economic model to which we impose an idealized, globally homogeneous increase in catchability. The globally-uniform technology creep produces a spatial progression of fishing from high-to-low latitudes that is similar to observations, primarily due to the impact of temperature on ecosystem metabolism. In colder LMEs, low respiration rates allow the build-up of larger pristine standing stocks, so that high-latitude fisheries are profitable earlier, at lower levels of fishing technology. We suggest that these bioenergetic characteristics contributed significantly to the historical progression of this human-ecological system

    Direct health care costs of treating seasonal affective disorder: a comparison of light therapy and fluoxetine.

    Objective. To compare the direct mental health care costs between individuals with Seasonal Affective Disorder randomized to either fluoxetine or light therapy. Methods. Data from the CANSAD study was used. CANSAD was an 8-week multicentre double-blind study that randomized participants to receive either light therapy plus placebo capsules or placebo light therapy plus fluoxetine. Participants were aged 18-65 who met criteria for major depressive episodes with a seasonal (winter) pattern. Mental health care service use was collected for each subject for 4 weeks prior to the start of treatment and for 4 weeks prior to the end of treatment. All direct mental health care services costs were analysed, including inpatient and outpatient services, investigations, and medications. Results. The difference in mental health costs was significantly higher after treatment for the light therapy group compared to the medication group-a difference of 111.25(z=3.77,P=0.000).However,whentheamortizedcostofthelightboxwastakenintotheaccount,thegroupswereswitchedwiththefluoxetinegroupincurringgreaterdirectcarecostsadifferenceof111.25 (z = -3.77, P = 0.000). However, when the amortized cost of the light box was taken into the account, the groups were switched with the fluoxetine group incurring greater direct care costs-a difference of 75.41 (z = -2.635, P = 0.008). Conclusion. The results suggest that individuals treated with medication had significantly less mental health care cost after-treatment compared to those treated with light therapy
