Fano effect in a ring-dot system with tunable coupling
Transport measurements are presented on a quantum ring that is tunnel-coupled
to a quantum dot. When the dot is in the Coulomb blockade regime, but strongly
coupled to the open ring, Fano line shapes are observed in the current through
the ring, when the electron number in the dot changes by one. The symmetry of
the Fano resonances is found to depend on the magnetic flux penetrating the
area of the ring and on the strength of the ring-dot coupling. At temperatures
above T=0.65 K the Fano effect disappears while the Aharonov-Bohm interference
in the ring persists up to T=4.2 K. Good agreement is found between these
experimental observations and a single channel scattering matrix model
including decoherence in the dot.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

Coconut oil predicts a beneficial lipid profile in pre-menopausal women in the Philippines
Coconut oil is a common edible oil in many countries, and there is mixed evidence for its effects on lipid profiles and cardiovascular disease risk. Here we examine the association between coconut oil consumption and lipid profiles in a cohort of 1,839 Filipino women (age 35–69 years) participating in the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey, a community based study in Metropolitan Cebu City. Coconut oil intake was measured as individual coconut oil intake calculated using two 24-hour dietary recalls (9.54 ± 8.92 grams). Cholesterol profiles were measured in plasma samples collected after an overnight fast. Mean lipid values in this sample were total cholesterol (TC) (186.52 ± 38.86 mg/dL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (40.85 ± 10.30 mg/dL), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) (119.42 ± 33.21 mg/dL), triglycerides (130.75 ± 85.29 mg/dL) and the TC/HDL ratio (4.80 ± 1.41). Linear regression models were used to estimate the association between coconut oil intake and each plasma lipid outcome after adjusting for total energy intake, age, body mass index (BMI), number of pregnancies, education, menopausal status, household assets and urban residency. The At Home/Chez Soi trial protocol: a pragmatic, multi-site, randomised controlled trial of a Housing First intervention for homeless individuals with mental illness in five Canadian cities

It has a sufficient knowledge base and interest to warrant a test of wide-scale implementation in various settings. This protocol describes the quantitative design of a Canadian five city, $110 million demonstration project and provides the rationale for key scientific decisions. Methods: A pragmatic, mixed methods, multi-site
field trial of the effectiveness of Housing First in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and
Moncton, is randomising approximately 2500 participants, stratified by high and moderate
need levels, into intervention and treatment as usual groups. Quantitative outcome measures
are being collected over a 2-year period and a qualitative process evaluation is being completed. Primary outcomes are housing stability, social functioning and, for the economic analyses, quality of life. Hierarchical linear modelling is the primary data analytic strategy.
Ethics and dissemination: Research ethics board approval has been obtained from 11 institutions and a safety and adverse events committee is in place. The results of the multi-site analyses of outcomes at 12 months and 2 years will be reported in a series of core scientific journal papers. Extensive knowledge exchange activities with non-academic

Reverberation Mapping Measurements of Black Hole Masses in Six Local Seyfert Galaxies
We present the final results from a high sampling rate, multi-month,
spectrophotometric reverberation mapping campaign undertaken to obtain either
new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag measurements for several relatively
low-luminosity AGNs. We have reliably measured thetime delay between variations
in the continuum and Hbeta emission line in six local Seyfert 1 galaxies. These
measurements are used to calculate the mass of the supermassive black hole at
the center of each of these AGNs. We place our results in context to the most
current calibration of the broad-line region (BLR) R-L relationship, where our
results remove outliers and reduce the scatter at the low-luminosity end of
this relationship. We also present velocity-resolved Hbeta time delay
measurements for our complete sample, though the clearest velocity-resolved

The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO)
AST/RO, a 1.7 m diameter telescope for astronomy and aeronomy studies at
wavelengths between 200 and 2000 microns, was installed at the South Pole
during the 1994-1995 Austral summer. The telescope operates continuously
through the Austral winter, and is being used primarily for spectroscopic
studies of neutral atomic carbon and carbon monoxide in the interstellar medium
of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The South Pole environment is
unique among observatory sites for unusually low wind speeds, low absolute
humidity, and the consistent clarity of the submillimeter sky. Four heterodyne
receivers, an array receiver, three acousto-optical spectrometers, and an array
spectrometer are installed. A Fabry-Perot spectrometer using a bolometric array
and a Terahertz receiver are in development. Telescope pointing, focus, and
calibration methods as well as the unique working environment and logistical
