    Towards Laser Driven Hadron Cancer Radiotherapy: A Review of Progress

    It has been known for about sixty years that proton and heavy ion therapy is a very powerful radiation procedure for treating tumours. It has an innate ability to irradiate tumours with greater doses and spatial selectivity compared with electron and photon therapy and hence is a tissue sparing procedure. For more than twenty years powerful lasers have generated high energy beams of protons and heavy ions and hence it has been frequently speculated that lasers could be used as an alternative to RF accelerators to produce the particle beams necessary for cancer therapy. The present paper reviews the progress made towards laser driven hadron cancer therapy and what has still to be accomplished to realise its inherent enormous potential.Comment: 40 pages, 24 figure

    We present the current photometric dataset for the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey, including HST photometry from ACS, WFPC2, and NICMOS. These data have enabled the confirmation of an additional 15 grade `A' (certain) lens systems, bringing the number of SLACS grade `A' lenses to 85; including 13 grade `B' (likely) systems, SLACS has identified nearly 100 lenses and lens candidates. Approximately 80% of the grade `A' systems have elliptical morphologies while ~10% show spiral structure; the remaining lenses have lenticular morphologies. Spectroscopic redshifts for the lens and source are available for every system, making SLACS the largest homogeneous dataset of galaxy-scale lenses to date. We have developed a novel Bayesian stellar population analysis code to determine robust stellar masses with accurate error estimates. We apply this code to deep, high-resolution HST imaging and determine stellar masses with typical statistical errors of 0.1 dex; we find that these stellar masses are unbiased compared to estimates obtained using SDSS photometry, provided that informative priors are used. The stellar masses range from 10^10.5 to 10^11.8 M_\odot and the typical stellar mass fraction within the Einstein radius is 0.4, assuming a Chabrier IMF. The ensemble properties of the SLACS lens galaxies, e.g. stellar masses and projected ellipticities, appear to be indistinguishable from other SDSS galaxies with similar stellar velocity dispersions. This further supports that SLACS lenses are representative of the overall population of massive early-type galaxies with M* >~ 10^11 M_\odot, and are therefore an ideal dataset to investigate the kpc-scale distribution of luminous and dark matter in galaxies out to z ~ 0.5.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables, published in Ap

    Forehead Skin Blood Flow in Normal Neonates during Active and Quiet Sleep, Measured with a Diode Laser Doppler Instrument

    Changes in forehead skin blood flow during active and quiet sleep were determined in 16 healthy neonates using a recently developed semi-conductor laser Doppler flow meter without light conducting fibres. Measurements were carried out at a postnatal age varying from 5 hours to 7 days. The two sleep states could be distinguished in 17 recordings. The mean skin blood flow values during active sleep were significantly higher (p<0.01) than those during quiet sleep, the mean increase being 28.1%. The variability of the flow signal, expressed as the coefficient of variation, changed significantly from 23.1% during active sleep to 18.2% during quiet sleep

    Nonlinear Scattering of a Bose-Einstein Condensate on a Rectangular Barrier

    We consider the nonlinear scattering and transmission of an atom laser, or Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) on a finite rectangular potential barrier. The nonlinearity inherent in this problem leads to several new physical features beyond the well-known picture from single-particle quantum mechanics. We find numerical evidence for a denumerably infinite string of bifurcations in the transmission resonances as a function of nonlinearity and chemical potential, when the potential barrier is wide compared to the wavelength of oscillations in the condensate. Near the bifurcations, we observe extended regions of near-perfect resonance, in which the barrier is effectively invisible to the BEC. Unlike in the linear case, it is mainly the barrier width, not the height, that controls the transmission behavior.     K_L \ra \mu^\pm e^\mp \nu \overline{\nu} as background to K_L \ra \mu^\pm e^\mp

    We consider the process K_L \ra \mu^\pm e^\mp \nu \overline{\nu} at next to leading order in chiral perturbation theory. This process occurs in the standard model at second order in the weak interaction and constitutes a potential background in searches for new physics through the modes K_L \ra \mu^\pm e^\mp. We find that the same cut, Mμe>489M_{\mu e}>489~MeV, used to remove the sequential decays K_{l3}\ra \pi_{l2} pushes the B(K_L \ra \mu^\pm e^\mp \nu \overline{\nu}) to the 102310^{-23} level, effectively removing it as a background.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 1 figure appended as postscript file after \end{document}.     PKS B1400-33: an unusual radio relic in a poor cluster

    We present new arcminute resolution radio images of the low surface brightness radio source PKS B1400-33 that is located in the poor cluster Abell S753. The observations consist of 330 MHz VLA, 843 MHz MOST and 1398 and 2378 MHz ATCA data. These new images, with higher surface brightness sensitivity than previous observations, reveal that the large scale structure consists of extended filamentary emission bounded by edge-brightened rims. The source is offset on one side of symmetrically distributed X-ray emission that is centered on the dominant cluster galaxy NGC 5419. PKS B1400-33 is a rare example of a relic in a poor cluster with radio properties unlike those of most relics and halos observed in cluster environments. The diffuse source appears to have had an unusual origin and we discuss possible mechanisms. We examine whether the source could be re-energized relic radio plasma or a buoyant synchrotron bubble that is a relic of activity in NGC 5419. The more exciting prospect is that the source is relic plasma preserved in the cluster gaseous environment following the chance injection of a radio lobe into the ICM as a result of activity in a galaxy at the periphery of the cluster.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

    Influence of Mo on the Fe:Mo:C nano-catalyst thermodynamics for single-walled carbon nanotube growth

    We explore the role of Mo in Fe:Mo nanocatalyst thermodynamics for low-temperature chemical vapor deposition growth of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). By using the size-pressure approximation and ab initio modeling, we prove that for both Fe-rich (~80% Fe or more) and Mo-rich (~50% Mo or more) Fe:Mo clusters, the presence of carbon in the cluster causes nucleation of Mo2C. This enhances the activity of the particle since it releases Fe, which is initially bound in a stable Fe:Mo phase, so that it can catalyze SWCNT growth. Furthermore, the presence of small concentrations of Mo reduce the lower size limit of low-temperature steady-state growth from ~0.58nm for pure Fe particles to ~0.52nm. Our ab initio-thermodynamic modeling explains experimental results and establishes a new direction to search for better catalysts.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. submitte

    The Use of Poro-Elastic Finite Elements to Model the Structural Damping Effect of Fibrous Acoustical Treatments

    Recently, new models for limp, fibrous sound absorbing materials have been proposed and verified. It has also been shown that these models may be used to optimize the sound absorption and barrier performance of layered acoustical systems. During that work, it was noticed that layers of fibrous materials can, under some circumstances, provide significant damping when they are applied to panel structures. It has since been shown that that structural damping effect may be predicted analytically by using a modal expansion procedure. The latter approach, however, can only conveniently be applied in circumstances when the vibrating structure has a simple shape and boundary conditions. Thus, in the work reported here it was of interest to demonstrate that the damping effect created by fibrous materials could also be predicted by using a finite element procedure. Successful application of the finite element method would then allow the damping effect of fibrous materials on arbitrarily shaped vibrating bodies to be studied. The poro-elastic finite element model that was used here to model the fibrous material has been described extensively elsewhere. That model has now been incorporated into a software package known as SAFE (Structural Acoustic Finite Element), an analysis module of the finite/boundary element package, COMET/Acoustics. The SAFE package was used to make the calculations reported here. The detailed objectives of the present work were first to duplicate analytical structural damping predictions by using a finite element approach, and thus to verify the earlier predictions. Secondly, it was desired to gain experience with modeling limp, fibrous materials by using SAFE. Finally, it was of interest to begin to optimize the acoustical behavior of acoustical materials by using numerical tools, and to examine the impact of these materials on the structural vibration of automotive panels, for example

    Antioxidant vitamin intakes assessed using a food-frequency questionnaire: correlation with biochemical status in smokers and non-smokers

    The increasing interest in the possible role of antioxidant vitamins in many disease states means that methods of assessing vitamin intakes which are suitable for large-scale investigations are now required. The suitability of the food-frequency questionnaire, which was developed by the Medical Research Council - Cardiff Group, for determining dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins in epidemiological studies was investigated in 196 Scottish men. The validity of the dietary data was assessed by comparison with serum vitamin concentrations, and separate analyses were performed for current smokers and non-smokers. The results showed that total energy intake and the percentage of energy derived from sugar were higher in smokers, and that both dietary and serum values of vitamin C, β-carotene and vitamin E were lower in smokers than non-smokers. After adjustment for serum lipids, energy intake and body mass index, correlation coefficients between dietary and serum vitamins C and E were similar for smokers (r 0.555 and 0.25 respectively) and non-smokers (r 0.58 and 0.32 respectively). Correlation between dietary and serum carotenes was reduced from 0.28 in non-smokers to 0.09 in smokers and correlations for retinol and total vitamin A were weakly significant only for non-smokers. The food-frequency questionnaire assigned > 70% of subjects correctly into the upper or lower plus adjacent tertiles of serum vitamin values, with the exception of β-carotene and total vitamin A for smokers. Thus, the food-frequency questionnaire appeared to be an adequate tool for assigning individuals into tertiles of serum antioxidant vitamins with the main exception of β-carotene for smokers. Marked differences do occur between the vitamins and between the smoking groups which may reflect reduced accuracy of reporting on the food-frequency questionnaire or differential absorption and metabolism of the vitamin
