Design tribes and information spaces for creative conversations
This paper reports on work in progress to augment the role and practice of Creative Conversations in product design education. We describe changes in practice designed to elevate the importance of conversations and various pedagogical approaches used to support this elevation. These changes are principally manifested in the formation of like-minded Communities of Interest, or ‘Design Tribes’, the adoption of revised design process models and the associated reorganisation of assessment philosophy and practice. We go on to describe and reflect on various technological interventions deployed, that have been designed to weakly augment the conversation space in both situated (studio based contact sessions) and distributed (work undertaken in between contact sessions) settings.

X-ray Over-Luminous Elliptical Galaxies: A New Class of Mass Concentrations in the Universe?
We detect four isolated, X-ray over-luminous (Lx>2e43 [h/0.5]**-2 erg/s)
elliptical galaxies (OLEGs) in our 160 square degree ROSAT PSPC survey. The
extent of their X-ray emission, total X-ray luminosity, total mass, and mass of
the hot gas in these systems correspond to poor clusters, and the optical
luminosity of the central galaxies (M_R<-22.5 + 5 lg h) is comparable to that
of cluster cDs. However, there are no detectable fainter galaxy concentrations
around the central elliptical. The mass-to-light ratio within the radius of
detectable X-ray emission is in the range 250-450 Msun/Lsun, which is 2-3 times
higher than typically found in clusters or groups. These objects can be the
result of galaxy merging within a group. However, their high M/L values are
difficult to explain in this scenario. OLEGs must have been undisturbed for a
very long time, which makes them the ultimate examples of systmes in
hydrostatic equilibrium. The number density of OLEGs is n=2.4(+3.1-1.2}x10**-7
(h/0.5)**-3 Mpc**-3 at the 90% confidence. They comprise 20% of all clusters
and groups of comparable X-ray luminosity, and nearly all galaxies brighter
than M_R=-22.5. The estimated contirubution of OLEGs to the total mass density

Transformation of an uncertain video search pipeline to a sketch-based visual analytics loop
Traditional sketch-based image or video search systems rely on machine learning concepts as their core technology. However, in many applications, machine learning alone is impractical since videos may not be semantically annotated sufficiently, there may be a lack of suitable training data, and the search requirements of the user may frequently change for different tasks. In this work, we develop a visual analytics systems that overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional approach. We make use of a sketch-based interface to enable users to specify search requirement in a flexible manner without depending on semantic annotation. We employ active machine learning to train different analytical models for different types of search requirements. We use visualization to facilitate knowledge discovery at the different stages of visual analytics. This includes visualizing the parameter space of the trained model, visualizing the search space to support interactive browsing, visualizing candidature search results to support rapid interaction for active learning while minimizing watching videos, and visualizing aggregated information of the search results. We demonstrate the system for searching spatiotemporal attributes from sports video to identify key instances of the team and player performance. © 1995-2012 IEEE
Probing spin-charge separation in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid
In a one-dimensional (1D) system of interacting electrons, excitations of
spin and charge travel at different speeds, according to the theory of a
Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid (TLL) at low energies. However, the clear observation
of this spin-charge separation is an ongoing challenge experimentally. We have
fabricated an electrostatically-gated 1D system in which we observe spin-charge
separation and also the predicted power-law suppression of tunnelling into the
1D system. The spin-charge separation persists even beyond the low-energy
regime where the TLL approximation should hold. TLL effects should therefore
also be important in similar, but shorter, electrostatically gated wires, where

Analysis of Fcγ receptor haplotypes in rheumatoid arthritis: FCGR3A remains a major susceptibility gene at this locus, with an additional contribution from FCGR3B
The Fcγ receptors play important roles in the initiation and regulation of many immunological and inflammatory processes, and genetic variants (FCGR) have been associated with numerous autoimmune and infectious diseases. The data in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are conflicting and we previously demonstrated an association between FCGR3A and RA. In view of the close molecular proximity with FCGR2A, FCGR2B and FCGR3B, additional polymorphisms within these genes and FCGR haplotypes were examined to refine the extent of association with RA. Biallelic polymorphisms in FCGR2A, FCGR2B and FCGR3B were examined for association with RA in two well characterized UK Caucasian and North Indian/Pakistani cohorts, in which FCGR3A genotyping had previously been undertaken. Haplotype frequencies and linkage disequilibrium were estimated across the FCGR locus and a model-free analysis was performed to determine association with RA. This was followed by regression analysis, allowing for phase uncertainty, to identify the particular haplotype(s) that influences disease risk. Our results reveal that FCGR2A, FCGR2B and FCGR3B were not associated with RA. The haplotype with the strongest association with RA susceptibility was the FCGR3A–FCGR3B 158V-NA2 haplotype (odds ratio 3.18, 95% confidence interval 1.13–8.92 [P = 0.03] for homozygotes compared with all genotypes). The association was stronger in the presence of nodules (odds ratio 5.03, 95% confidence interval 1.44–17.56; P = 0.01). This haplotype was also more common in North Indian/Pakistani RA patients than in control individuals, but not significantly so. Logistic regression analyses suggested that FCGR3A remained the most significant gene at this locus. The increased association with an FCGR3A–FCGR3B haplotype suggests that other polymorphic variants within FCGR3A or FCGR3B, or in linkage disequilibrium with this haplotype, may additionally contribute to disease pathogenesis
The 160 Square Degree ROSAT Survey: the Revised Catalog of 201 Clusters with Spectroscopic Redshifts
We present the revised catalog of galaxy clusters detected as extended X-ray
sources in the 160 Square Degree ROSAT Survey, including spectroscopic
redshifts and X-ray luminosities for 200 of the 201 members. The median
redshift is z~0.25 and the median X-ray luminosity is 4.2e+43 erg/s/h50^2
(0.5-2.0 keV). This is the largest high-redshift sample of X-ray selected
clusters published to date. There are 73 objects at z>0.3 and 22 objects at
z>0.5 drawn from a statistically complete flux-limited survey with a median
object flux of 1.4d-13 erg/cm^2/s. We describe the optical follow-up of these
clusters with an emphasis on our spectroscopy which has yielded 155 cluster
redshifts, 110 of which are presented here for the first time. These
measurements combined with 45 from the literature and other sources provide
near-complete spectroscopic coverage for our survey. We discuss the final
optical identifications for the extended X-ray sources in the survey region and

Many-body effects in a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas
We have investigated electron transport in a quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D)
electron gas as a function of the confinement potential. At a particular
potential configuration, and electron concentration, the ground state of a 1D
quantum wire splits into two rows to form an incipient Wigner lattice. It was
found that application of a transverse magnetic field can transform a
double-row electron configuration into a single-row due to magnetic enhancement
of the confinement potential. The movements of the energy levels have been
monitored under varying conditions of confinement potential and in-plane
magnetic field. It is also shown that when the confinement is weak, electron
occupation drives a reordering of the levels such that the normal ground state
passes through the higher levels. The results show that the levels can be
manipulated by utilising their different dependence on spatial confinement and
electron concentration, thus enhancing the understanding of many body
interactions in mesoscopic 1D quantum wires.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Net Gain: Seeking better outcomes for local people when mitigating biodiversity loss from development
Economic development projects are increasingly applying the mitigation hierarchy to achieve No Net Loss, or even a Net Gain, of biodiversity. Because people value biodiversity and ecosystem services, this can affect the wellbeing of local people, however these types of social impacts from development receive limited consideration. We present ethical, practical and regulatory reasons why development projects applying the mitigation hierarchy should consider related social impacts. We highlight risks to local wellbeing where projects restrict access to biodiversity and ecosystem services in biodiversity offsets. We then present a framework laying out challenges and associated opportunities for delivering better biodiversity and local wellbeing outcomes. Greater coordination between social and biodiversity experts, and early and effective integration of local people in the process, will ensure that efforts to reduce the negative impacts of development on biodiversity can contribute to, rather than detract from, local people’s wellbeing
