    The Ties that Bind: Asian American Communities without \u27\u27Ethnic Spaces in Southeast Michigan

    According to the 2000 census, over 12 million Asian Americans, almost 70 percent of them either immigrants who came to the U.S. after 1970 or their children, comprised an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population that was more regionally dispersed throughout the U.S. than ever before. (Lai and Arguelles, 2003). Despite these transitions and increasing heterogeneity, discourses about Asian American communities have focused on ethnic enclaves such as Chinatowns, Koreatowns, and Little Saigons where coethnic residents, businesses, services, institutions and organizations exist and interact in urban or suburban physical spaces of the bicoastal United States (Fong, 1994; Li, 1999; Zhou and Bankston, 1988). According to Kathleen Wong (Lau), these tangible markers tied to space are often privileged as authentic Asian American communities while those without demographic concentrations and geographically bound enclaves are less advanced communities; as a result, [w]hat is not recognized in the literature is the \u27localness\u27 of this production.     Employee participation in the financial and managerial aspects of firms has increased as governments and owners have tried to enhance productivity, broaden ownership, or facilitate privatization transactions. Many developed countries are experiencing rapid growth in schemes to introduce or enhance various forms of employee participation. For example, about 11,000 firms employing 11 million workers in the United States have some form of stock ownership for employees. An estimated 500,000 employee profit sharing plans exist in the U.S., and participatory plans are a major element in the industrial policy of such countries as Japan and Sweden. In developing countries, plans for employee participation have emerged only recently. The effect of employee participation schemes on firm performance is mixed. Without privatization, evidence is strong that combining employee ownership or profit sharing with some direct participation produces a positive impact on firm performance. Employee ownership and other forms of participation do appear to ease privatization. Employee ownership provides a sense of security to employees that the risk of redundancy in the firm after privatization will be less. Where layoffs do occur after privatization, share ownership may complement a severance package.     Inhibition of Protease Activity in Muscle Extracts and Surimi from Pacific Whiting, Merluccius productus, and Arrowtooth Flounder, Atheresthes stomias

    Muscle extracts of Pacific whiting, Merluccius productus, and arrowtooth flounder, Atheresthes stomias, were assayed for proteolytic activity using azocasein as a substrate. Pacific whiting extracts showed maximum activity at pH 5.0-5.2 and a temperature of 50°C, while arrowtooth flounder extracts had maximum activity at pH 5.5 and 55°C. Three sources of inhibitors (potatoes, egg white, beef plasma protein) were evaluated in vitro for inhibition of protease activity. All three were found to be effective inhibitors in crude muscle extracts. Further studies utilizing these inhibitors in surimi showed that potato was equivalent to both egg white and beef plasma protein in preserving the gel forming characteristics ofheated kamaboko in both species

    Improving the Institutional Structures for Disseminating Energy Efficiency in Emerging Nations: Energy Agencies in South Africa

    Emerging nations are typically characterized by high energy intensities despite significant energy efficiency potentials and numerous project oriented efforts to introduce energy-efficient technologies. The paper argues that successful technology dissemination needs appropriate institutional structures to reduce the related transaction cost. While a project-by-project approach risks to evaporate after completion, an energy agency would allow to bundle the know-how and information gained, ease access to funding and thus reduce information search cost and increase availability of efficient technologies. In a case study for South Africa, we examine the appropriateness of this concept for emerging nations.     Retaining Older Volunteers Is Key to Meeting Future Volunteer Needs

    The boomers' impending retirement has spurred interest in tapping their productive energies to benefit society. This study examines older adults' decisions to stop or start formal volunteer work. The findings show that older adults usually stick with their original decisions, but more often stop than start volunteering. Volunteers who contribute a lot of hours over many years and who are married to volunteers are less likely to quit. And nonvolunteers are more likely to start volunteering if they have been uninvolved for few years and their spouses volunteer. The results highlight the importance of volunteer retention strategies for nonprofit agencies

    Resonant photon absorption in the low spin molecule V15

    We report the first study of the micro-SQUID response of a molecular system to electromagnetic radiation. The advantages of our micro-SQUID technique in respect to pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques consist in the possibility to perform time-resolved experiments (below 1 ns) on submicrometer sizes samples (about 1000 spins) at low temperature (below 100 mK). Resonant photon absorption in the GHz range was observed via low temperature micro-SQUID magnetization measurements of the spin ground state S = 1/2 of the molecular complex V15. The line-width essentially results from intra-molecular hyperfine interaction. The results point out that observing Rabi oscillations in molecular nanomagnets requires well isolated low spin systems and high radiation power. Our first results open the way for time-resolved observations of quantum superposition of spin-up and spin-down states in SMMs.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
