    Iterative forcing and hyperimmunity in reverse mathematics

    The separation between two theorems in reverse mathematics is usually done by constructing a Turing ideal satisfying a theorem P and avoiding the solutions to a fixed instance of a theorem Q. Lerman, Solomon and Towsner introduced a forcing technique for iterating a computable non-reducibility in order to separate theorems over omega-models. In this paper, we present a modularized version of their framework in terms of preservation of hyperimmunity and show that it is powerful enough to obtain the same separations results as Wang did with his notion of preservation of definitions.Comment: 15 page

    Participatory monitoring of the impact of watershed interventions in the tropical Andes

    This chapter documents the motivations and methods of the Regional Initiative for Hydrological Monitoring of Andean Ecosystems (iMHEA). First, it introduces the context that led to the formation of a diverse consortium of institutions with a joint interest in Andean ecosystems and water. The methodological approach adopted by the monitoring network is then presented in detail. Lastly, this chapter shows preliminary main results, the most relevant milestones and breakthroughs, and the major remaining challenges and perspectives in the scientific, technological and social domains. The objective of the monitoring, as promoted by iMHEA, is to generate standardized data that can be used to increase the knowledge about hydrological ecosystem services in Andean watersheds and the impacts of watershed interventions. The correct use of the generated knowledge, from community level to national governance entities, proves crucial to increase catchment intervention efficiency and improve decision-making on water resources management in data-scarce regions, with potential application to other regions of the world

    Characteristic Energy of the Coulomb Interactions and the Pileup of States

    Tunneling data on La1.28Sr1.72Mn2O7\mathrm{La_{1.28}Sr_{1.72}Mn_2O_7} crystals confirm Coulomb interaction effects through the E\sqrt{\mathrm{E}} dependence of the density of states. Importantly, the data and analysis at high energy, E, show a pileup of states: most of the states removed from near the Fermi level are found between ~40 and 130 meV, from which we infer the possibility of universal behavior.     Perfect Fluid Quantum Anisotropic Universe: Merits and Challenges

    The present paper deals with quantization of perfect fluid anisotropic cosmological models. Bianchi type V and IX models are discussed following Schutz's method of expressing fluid velocities in terms of six potentials. The wave functions are found for several examples of equations of state. In one case a complete wave packet could be formed analytically. The initial singularity of a zero proper volume can be avoided in this case, but it is plagued by the usual problem of non-unitarity of anisotropic quantum cosmological models.     Harnessing Higher-Order (Meta-)Logic to Represent and Reason with Complex Ethical Theories

    The computer-mechanization of an ambitious explicit ethical theory, Gewirth's Principle of Generic Consistency, is used to showcase an approach for representing and reasoning with ethical theories exhibiting complex logical features like alethic and deontic modalities, indexicals, higher-order quantification, among others. Harnessing the high expressive power of Church's type theory as a meta-logic to semantically embed a combination of quantified non-classical logics, our work pushes existing boundaries in knowledge representation and reasoning. We demonstrate that intuitive encodings of complex ethical theories and their automation on the computer are no longer antipodes.Comment: 14 page

    Influence de l’état d’eutrophisation de la lagune de Gbèzoumè (Ouidah) sur sa faune aquatique

    L’objectif de cette étude est de révéler l’influence de l’état d’eutrophisation de la lagune de Gbèzoumè au Bénin, sur sa faune aquatique. Les  mesures des paramètres physico-chimiques de pollution ont été faites insitu et au laboratoire avec des appareils tels que le chromatographe ionique ICS-1000, le multiparamètre pH /Oximètre WTW 340i. La méthode de Lorenzen a été de même utilisée. Il en ressort que les teneurs en oxygène dissous sont insuffisantes (en deçà de 3 mg/L). Les concentrations en nitrites sont par ailleurs au-delà de la normale. Les teneurs en chlorophylle ont révèlé que la lagune de Gbèzoumè est eutrophe. C’est ce qui a donc influencé négativement l’état physiologique des espèces de poissons échantillonnées.© 2013 International Formulae Group.     Personhood, consciousness, and god : how to be a proper pantheist

    © Springer Nature B.V. 2018In this paper I develop a theory of personhood which leaves open the possibility of construing the universe as a person. If successful, it removes one bar to endorsing pantheism. I do this by examining a rising school of thought on personhood, on which persons, or selves, are understood as identical to episodes of consciousness. Through a critique of this experiential approach to personhood, I develop a theory of self as constituted of qualitative mental contents, but where these contents are also capable of unconscious existence. On this theory, though we can be conscious of our selves, consciousness turns out to be inessential to personhood. This move, I then argue, provides resources for responding to the pantheist’s problem of God’s person.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
