    Control Infrastructure for a Pulsed Ion Accelerator

    We report on updates to the accelerator controls for the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment II, a pulsed induction-type accelerator for heavy ions. The control infrastructure is built around a LabVIEW interface combined with an Apache Cassandra backend for data archiving. Recent upgrades added the storing and retrieving of device settings into the database, as well as ZeroMQ as a message broker that replaces LabVIEW's shared variables. Converting to ZeroMQ also allows easy access via other programming languages, such as Python

    Combined Cycle power plants have recently become a serious alternative for standard coal- and oil-fired power plants because of their high thermal efficiency, environmentally friendly operation, and short time to construct. The combined cycle plant is an integration of the gas turbine and the steam turbine, combining many of the advantages of both thermodynamic cycles using a single fuel. By recovering the heat energy in the gas turbine exhaust and using it to generate steam, the combined cycle leverages the conversion of the fuel energy at a very high efficiency. The heat recovery steam generator forms the backbone of combined cycle plants, providing the link between the gas turbine and the steam turbine. The design of HRSG has historically largely been completed using thermodynamic principles related to the steam path, without much regard to the gas-side of the system. An effort has been made using resources at both UK and Vogt Power International to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the gas-side flow path of the HRSG as an integral tool in the design process. This thesis focuses on how CFD analysis can be used to assess the impact of the gas-side flow on the HRSG performance and identify design modifications to improve the performance.     Liquid-Liquid Equilibrium of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) 6000 + Sodium Succinate + Water System at Different Temperatures

    Phase diagrams and the compositions of coexisting phases of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) 6000 + sodium succinate + water system have been determined experimentally at 298.15, 308.15, and 318.15 K. The effects of temperature on the binodal curve and tie lines have been studied. The binodal curves were successfully fitted to a nonlinear equation relating the concentrations of PEG 6000 and sodium succinate, and the coefficients were estimated for the formentioned systems (low AARD, high R2, and low SD). Tie-line compositions were estimated and correlated using Othmer-Tobias and Bancroft equations, and the parameters were reported. The effect of temperature on the phase-forming ability has been studied by fitting the binodal data to a Setschenow-type equation for each temperature. The effective excluded volume (EEV) values were also calculated from the binodal data, and it was found out that the values increased with an increase in the temperature.     Aims: To determine if dental bacterial DNA are present in the amniotic cavity of healthy pregnant women undergoing an elective caesarean section at term utilising culture independent techniques. Methods: Pregnant Australian women undergoing an elective caesarean section were recruited. Women completed questionnaires addressing demographics, past and current pregnancies and medical history. One high vaginal swab and three amniotic cavity swabs (amniotic fluid, newborn axilla and placental) were collected under sterile conditions. Samples were analysed using culture-independent techniques to detect the presence of predefined pathogenic bacterial taxa of the oral microbiome. Taxa isolated from the amniotic cavity swabs were compared to those isolated from the vaginal swab. Results: DNA from taxa isolated from the amniotic cavity but not vagina included A. xylosoxidans, A. tumefaciens, B. subtilis, Bartonella sp, Bergeyella sp, C. concisus, C. curvus, C. durum, D. microaerophilus, G. haemolysans, G. morbillorum, G. adiacens, G. elegans, K. pneumoniae, L. casei, L. paracasei, L. fermentum, P. aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, P. pseudoalcaligenes, P. stutzeri, R. microluginosa, S. maltophilia, S. pneumoniae, S. salivarius, S. sanguinis, V. dispar, V. parvula and Xanthomonas sp. Conclusion: The DNA of many pathogenic oral bacteria can be identified in the amniotic cavity of healthy pregnant women at term when utilising culture-independent techniques. Given DNA is not always present in the vagina, the study findings fulfill one criterion necessary for oral haematogenous spread to the amniotic cavity

    An intelligent auto-response short message service categorization model using semantic index

    Short message service (SMS) is one of the quickest and easiest ways used for communication, used by businesses, government organizations, and banks to send short messages to large groups of people. Categorization of SMS under different message types in their inboxes will provide a concise view for receivers. Former studies on the said problem are at the binary level as ham or spam which triggered the masking of specific messages that were useful to the end user but were treated as spam. Further, it is extended with multi labels such as ham, spam, and others which is not sufficient to meet all the necessities of end users. Hence, a multi-class SMS categorization is needed based on the semantics (information) embedded in it. This paper introduces an intelligent auto-response model using a semantic index for categorizing SMS messages into 5 categories: ham, spam, info, transactions, and one time password’s, using the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) algorithm. In this approach, each SMS is classified into one of the predefined categories. This experiment was conducted on the “multi-class SMS dataset” with 7,398 messages, which are differentiated into 5 classes. The accuracy obtained from the experiment was 97%
