    Surface Bloch waves in metamaterial and metal-dielectric superlattices

    We study the properties of electromagnetic Bloch waves in semi-infinite periodic structures created by alternating metamaterial and dielectric layers. We derive and analyze the dispersion relations in the long-wavelength limit for both TE- and TM-polarized surface Bloch modes, for magnetic metamaterials with negative refraction and metal-dielectric plasmonic superlattices. We reveal that in the subwavelength regime the bulk modes are characterized by three different refractive indices ("tri-refringence") while the surface modes can propagate parallel to the Bloch wavevector and along the interface between superlattice and semi-infinite dielectric.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A Study on Green Economy Indicators and Modeling: Russian Context

    This article aims to assess and forecast the dynamics of a regional green economy. The research relevance is determined by the need to develop theoretical and methodological basis of the green economy for the transition period and to identify criteria basis for assessing the state and regional level of it. The authors applied the modern methods, which allowed to model criteria considering data uncertainty and both static and dynamic criteria. The research process involved the methods of scientific analysis, comparison and synthesis, the theory of fuzzy sets, and fuzzy modeling. The main principles and methodology of the criteria evaluation for a regional green economy are proposed. The principal methodological approach in this research combines the current state and dynamics of the green economy in evaluating and forecasting the conditions of data uncertainty. The research results form a theoretical, methodological, and practical basis for assessing the current state and level of a regional green economy development, determining the effectiveness of environmental and economic programs, optimizing financial management, conducting environmental monitoring, and developing state plans.The research was funded by the grant of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation to Perm National Research Polytechnic University # 26.6884.2017/8.9 "Sustainable development of urban areas and the improvement of the human environment.

    Cosmetic Dentistry in Ancient Time – Short Review

    Paleoodontological research proved that some form of cosmetic dentistry existed in the ancient time. The intentional dental mutilation, dental decoration and modifications of anterior teeth have been widespread occurrence in many cultures. The facts that there are various names of this phenomenon indicate the different interpretations from the researches of this type of interventions. Although archaeological specimens of modified teeth are usually isolated and damaged they extend our knowledge about ancient nations and human behaviour in the past. The paper describes examples of those interventions in Southeast Asia, Africa, pre-Columbian America and Europe. Phoenicians and Etruscans dental art was described too. It is interesting that different civilizations with no mutual contact and whose cultures are very distinct have developed such similar customs. That could be considered as evidence that sense and need for beauty lies deep within human nature

    Modified group projectors: tight binding method

    Modified group projector technique for induced representations is a powerful tool for calculation and symmetry quantum numbers assignation of a tight binding Hamiltonian energy bands of crystals. Namely, the induced type structure of such a Hamiltonian enables efficient application of the procedure: only the interior representations of the orbit stabilizers are to be considered. Then the generalized Bloch eigen functions are obtained naturally by the expansion to the whole state space. The method is applied to the electronic pi-bands of the single wall carbon nanotubes: together with dispersion relations, their complete symmetry assignation by the full symmetry (line) groups and the corresponding symmetry-adapted eigen function are found.Comment: 10 pages 1 figur

    Technical Note: High-resolution mineralogical database of dust-productive soils for atmospheric dust modeling

    Dust storms and associated mineral aerosol transport are driven primarily by meso- and synoptic-scale atmospheric processes. It is therefore essential that the dust aerosol process and background atmospheric conditions that drive dust emissions and atmospheric transport are represented with sufficiently well-resolved spatial and temporal features. The effects of airborne dust interactions with the environment determine the mineral composition of dust particles. The fractions of various minerals in aerosol are determined by the mineral composition of arid soils; therefore, a high-resolution specification of the mineral and physical properties of dust sources is needed. <br></br> Several current dust atmospheric models simulate and predict the evolution of dust concentrations; however, in most cases, these models do not consider the fractions of minerals in the dust. The accumulated knowledge about the impacts of the mineral composition in dust on weather and climate processes emphasizes the importance of including minerals in modeling systems. Accordingly, in this study, we developed a global dataset consisting of the mineral composition of the current potentially dust-producing soils. In our study, we (a) mapped mineral data to a high-resolution 30 s grid, (b) included several mineral-carrying soil types in dust-productive regions that were not considered in previous studies, and (c) included phosphorus

    Stretched-coordinate PML in 2D TLM simulations

    A novel implementation of the stretched coordinate perfectly matched layer (PML) is presented for the two-dimensional (2D) transmission line modelling (TLM) method. The formulation offers a unified approach and is based on the mapping of the TLM node to a complex stretched domain for which the resulting transformation of the constituent RLC transmission line components is elaborated. The transformation is shown to modify the TLM connect-scatter algorithm. The absorption performance is demonstrated by simulating a canonical waveguide test case. Unlike the existing split-field based TLM-PML implementations, which are better suited to lossless media, the numerical results obtained show the proposed PML formulation is effective in the termination of both lossy and lossless media

    A Complex Domain Mapping of the SCN for an Effective PML Implementation in TLM

    An improved implementation of the perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for the Transmission Line Modelling (TLM) method based on a mapping of the symmetrical condensed node (SCN) to an analytically extended geometric space. By mapping the TLM node, a medium — circuit equivalence is developed which maps transmission line parameters from real to complex domain. This consequently modifies the TLM scatter-connect process. The PML implementation is demonstrated for canonical cases where it is shown to have a comparable absorption performance and a significantly improved temporal stability relative to previously published TLM-PML formulations

    Influence of summer temperatures on basic economic and tourism indicators of the middle mediterranean

    The Middle Mediterranean is characterized by long, hot, and dry summers, significant historical and cultural values, and the warm Mediterranean sea, making it attractive for coastal tourism. Given these characteristics, the goal of our paper is to analyze the influence of summer temperatures in the region of the Middle Mediterranean on the values of underlying economic and tourism indicators. The method of simple linear correlation and regression was used. Based on the results of testing, we came to the conclusion that the temperatures in the summer months have no significant influence on selected economic and tourism indicators. Also, we conclude that social factors have the greatest influence on these indicators. The coefficients of variation are calculated in the observed period to analyze the variability of the tested values. It could not be identified a statistically significant relationship of indicators with summer temperatures
