    Extremely Hot Ambient Temperature and Injury-related Mortality

    This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of extremely hot ambient temperatures on the total number of fatal injuries. Data were collected from a population-based mortality registry of Thanh Hoa, a province in the North Central region of Vietnam. This study qualified the distributed lag non-linear model and calculated the RR and 95% CI adjusted for long-term trend and absolute humidity. For the entire study population with 3,949 registered deaths due to injuries collected during 2005-2007, after the onset of extremely hot ambient temperatures, an increased risk of death was observed on the 9th day RR (95% CI) = 1.44 (1.06–1.97) and reached the peak on the 12th day RR (95% CI) = 1.58 (1.14–2.17), and at the 15th day RR (95% CI) = 1.49 (1.08–2.06). Men and old adults were identified as the most vulnerable groups. This study confirmed a positive association between hot temperatures and injury-related deaths in the province of 3.6 million people. The findings motivated further investigation into the effect of warm climate changes and the risk of deaths related to other specific causes such as road traffic, work-related injury, and etc

    Mapping for engagement: setting up a community based participatory research project to reach underserved communities at risk for Hepatitis C in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

    Background: Approximately 1. 07 million people in Vietnam are infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). To address this epidemic, the South East Asian Research Collaborative in Hepatitis (SEARCH) launched a 600-patient cohort study and two clinical trials, both investigating shortened treatment strategies for chronic HCV infection with direct-acting antiviral drugs. We conducted ethnographic research with a subset of trial participants and found that the majority were aware of HCV infection and its implications and were motivated to seek treatment. However, people who inject drugs (PWID), and other groups at risk for HCV were under-represented, although injecting drug use is associated with high rates of HCV. Material and Methods: We designed a community-based participatory research (CBPR) study to engage in dialogues surrounding HCV and other community-prioritized health issues with underserved groups at risk for HCV in Ho Chi Minh City. The project consists of three phases: situation analysis, CBPR implementation, and dissemination. In this paper, we describe the results of the first phase (i.e., the situation analysis) in which we conducted desk research and organized stakeholder mapping meetings with representatives from local non-government and community-based organizations where we used participatory research methods to identify and analyze key stakeholders working with underserved populations. Results: Twenty six institutions or groups working with the key underserved populations were identified. Insights about the challenges and dynamics of underserved communities were also gathered. Two working groups made up of representatives from the NGO and CBO level were formed. Discussion: Using the information provided by local key stakeholders to shape the project has helped us to build solid relationships, give the groups a sense of ownership from the early stages, and made the project more context specific. These steps are not only important preliminary steps for participatory studies but also for other research that takes place within the communities

    Enhanced Perpendicular Exchange Bias in Co/Pd Antidot Arrays

    Magnetic nanostructures revealing the exchange bias (EB) effect have attracted much interest in recent years due to their promising applications in spintronics, magnetic sensing and recording devices with various functionalities. In this paper, we report on the perpendicular exchange bias effect in a multilayered thin film composed of [Co/Pd] ferromagnetic multilayers exchange-coupled to an antiferromagnetic IrMn. The film was deposited on a porous anodized titania template. Influences of the films’ surface morphology as well as the order of layers deposited on the EB effect were studied. The enhancements of the EB field HEB (up to 30%) and the coercive field HC (two times) were achieved in the nanoporous films relative to their continuous film counterparts, which could be attributed to the specific morphology of the porous surfaces

    Measurement of Semileptonic Branching Fractions of B Mesons to Narrow D** States

    Using the data accumulated in 2002-2004 with the DO detector in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with centre-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV, the branching fractions of the decays B -> \bar{D}_1^0(2420) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X and B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0}(2460) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X and their ratio have been measured: BR(\bar{b}->B) \cdot BR(B-> \bar{D}_1^0 \mu^+ \nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_1^0 -> D*- pi+) = (0.087+-0.007(stat)+-0.014(syst))%; BR(\bar{b}->B)\cdot BR(B->D_2^{*0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_2^{*0} -> D*- \pi^+) = (0.035+-0.007(stat)+-0.008(syst))%; and (BR(B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X)BR(D2*0->D*- pi+)) / (BR(B -> \bar{D}_1^{0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X)\cdot BR(\bar{D}_1^{0}->D*- \pi^+)) = 0.39+-0.09(stat)+-0.12(syst), where the charge conjugated states are always implied.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Search for Large Extra Spatial Dimensions in Dimuon Production with the D0 Detector

    We present the results of a search for the effects of large extra spatial dimensions in ppˉp{\bar p} collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV in events containing a pair of energetic muons. The data correspond to 246 \ipb of integrated luminosity collected by the \D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Good agreement with the expected background was found, yielding no evidence for large extra dimensions. We set 95% C.L. lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale between 0.85 TeV and 1.27 TeV within several formalisms.     A search for W bb and W Higgs production in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

    We present a search for W b \bar{b} production in p \bar{p} collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV in events containing one electron, an imbalance in transverse momentum, and two b-tagged jets. Using 174 pb-1 of integrated luminosity accumulated by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, and the standard-model description of such events, we set a 95% C.L. upper limit on W b \bar{b}productionof6.6pbforbquarkswithtransversemomentapTb>20GeVandbbˉseparationinpseudorapidityazimuthspaceDeltaRbb>0.75.Restrictingthesearchtooptimizedbbˉmassintervalsprovidesupperlimitson production of 6.6 pb for b quarks with transverse momenta p_T^b > 20 GeV and b \bar{b} separation in pseudorapidity-azimuth space Delta R_bb > 0.75.     A Search for the Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decay B0_s -> mu^+mu^- in pp(bar) Collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV with the D0 Detector

    We present the results of a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay B0_s -> mu+ mu- using a data set with integrated luminosity of 240 pb^{-1} of pp(bar) collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV collected with the D0 detector in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We find the upper limit on the branching fraction to be Br(B0_s -> mu+ mu-) \leq 5.0 x 10^{-7} at the 95% C.L. assuming no contributions from the decay B0_d -> mu+ mu- in the signal region.     Study of ZγZ\gamma events and limits on anomalous ZZγZZ\gamma and ZγγZ\gamma\gamma couplings in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a measurement of the Z\gamma production cross section and limits on anomalous ZZ\gamma and Z\gamma\gamma couplings for form-factor scales of Lambda = 750 and 1000 GeV. The measurement is based on 138 (152) candidate events in the ee\gamma (\mu\mu\gamma) final state using 320 (290) pb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV. The 95% C.L. limits on real and imaginary parts of individual anomalous couplings are |h_{10,30}^{Z}|<0.23, |h_{20,40}^{Z}|<0.020, |h_{10,30}^{\gamma}|<0.23, and |h_{20,40}^{\gamma}|<0.019 for Lambda = 1000 GeV.Comment: submitted to Phys.
