Rate and Mechanism of the Oxidative Addition of Benzoic Anhydride to Palladium(0) Complexes in DMF
The rate constant of the oxidative addition of the benzoic anhydride (PhCO)2O to [Pd0(PPh3)4] has been determined in DMF and compared to that of phenyl halides and phenyl triflate. The following reactivity order has been established: PhI >> (PhCO)2O > PhOTf > PhBr. The oxidative addition of (PhCO)2O proceeds by activation of one CâO bond. Two acyl-PdII complexes are formed: a neutral complex trans-[(PhCO)Pd(OCOPh)(PPh3)2] and a cationic complex trans-[(PhCO)PdS(PPh3)2]+ (S = DMF) showing that the decarbonylation process is highly endergonic. The exchange of PPh3 by the bidentate ligand dppp does not favor the decarbonylation process.
Massive galaxies with very young AGN
Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies are generally thought to be
the young counterparts of classical extended radio sources and live in massive
ellipticals. GPS sources are vital for studying the early evolution of
radio-loud AGN, the trigger of their nuclear activity, and the importance of
feedback in galaxy evolution. We study the Parkes half-Jansky sample of GPS
radio galaxies of which now all host galaxies have been identified and 80% has
their redshifts determined (0.122 < z < 1.539). Analysis of the absolute
magnitudes of the GPS host galaxies show that at z > 1 they are on average a
magnitude fainter than classical 3C radio galaxies. This suggests that the AGN
in young radio galaxies have not yet much influenced the overall properties of
the host galaxy. However their restframe UV luminosities indicate that there is

Influence of Phosphoramidites in Copper-Catalyzed Conjugate Borylation Reaction
Copper(I) has become the preferred metal to catalyze the ÎČ-boration of α,ÎČ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and now we demonstrate that easily accessible monodentate chiral ligands, such as phosphoramidites and phosphites, can be convenient alternative ligands to induce asymmetry in the enantioselective version of this reaction, particularly in the ÎČ-boration of α,ÎČ-unsaturated imines.

Modeling and prediction of surgical procedure times
Accurate prediction of medical operation times is of crucial importance for cost efficient operation room planning in hospitals. This paper investigates the possible dependence of procedure times on surgeon factors like age, experience, gender, and team composition. The effect of these factors is estimated for over 30 different types of medical operations in two hospitals, by means of ANOVA models for logarithmic case durations. The estimation data set contains about 30,000 observations from 2005 till 2008. The relevance of surgeon factors depends on the type of operation. The factors found most often to be significant are team composition, experience, and daytime. Contrary to widespread opinions among surgeons, gender has nearly never a significant effect. By incorporating surgeon factors, the accuracy of out-of-sample prediction of case durations of about 1,250 surgical operations in 2009 is improved by up to more than 15 percent as compared to current planning procedures.planning;ANOVA model;European hospital;current procedure terminology (CPT);health care management;lognormal distribution;operation room;surgeon factors

Banking System Stability: A Cross-Atlantic Perspective
This paper derives indicators of the severity and structure of banking system risk from asymptotic interdependencies between banks%u2019 equity prices. We use new tools available from multivariate extreme value theory to estimate individual banks%u2019 exposure to each other (%u201Ccontagion risk%u201D) and to systematic risk. Moreover, by applying structural break tests to those measures we study whether capital markets indicate changes in the importance of systemic risk over time. Using data for the United States and the euro area, we can also compare banking system stability between the two largest economies in the world. Finally, for Europe we assess the relative importance of cross-border bank spillovers as compared to domestic bank spillovers. The results suggest, inter alia, that systemic risk in the US is higher than in the euro area, mainly as cross-border risks are still relatively mild in Europe. On both sides of the Atlantic systemic risk has increased during the 1990s.
The Forward Premium Puzzle and Latent Factors Day by Day
We use futures instead of forward rates to study the complete maturity spectrum of the forward premium puzzle from two days to six months. At short maturities the slope coefficient is positive, but these turn negative as the maturity increases to the monthly level. Futures data allow us to control for the influence of an unobserved factor that can be decomposed into a contract-specific and a time- to-maturity effect. Once we do this, we find that the coefficients on the forward premium are much closer to one.
