Clusters excited by intense laser pulses are a unique source of warm dense matter, that has been the subject of intensive experimental studies. The majority of those investigations concerns atomic clusters, whereas the evolution of molecular clusters excited by intense laser pulses is less explored. In this work we trace the dynamics of CO2\mathrm{CO_2} clusters triggered by a few-cycle 1.45-μ\mum driving pulse through the detection of XUV fluorescence induced by a delayed 800-nm ignition pulse. Striking differences among fluorescence dynamics from different ionic species are observed

Calibration and First light of the Diabolo photometer at the Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory

We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer, Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995 at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO) Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping with a secondary mirror. This technique and the dilution fridge concept will be used in future scan--modulated space instrument like the ESA Planck mission project.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Serie

A computational analysis of a novel therapeutic approach combining an advanced medicinal therapeutic device and a fracture fixation assembly for the treatment of osteoporotic fractures: Effects of physiological loading, interface conditions, and fracture fixation materials

: The occurrence of periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFF) has increased in people with osteoporosis due to decreased bone density, poor bone quality, and stress shielding from prosthetic implants. PFF treatment in the elderly is a genuine concern for orthopaedic surgeons as no effective solution currently exists. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine whether the design of a novel advanced medicinal therapeutic device (AMTD) manufactured from a polymeric blend in combination with a fracture fixation plate in the femur is capable of withstanding physiological loads without failure during the bone regenerative process. This was achieved by developing a finite element (FE) model of the AMTD together with a fracture fixation assembly, and a femur with an implanted femoral stem. The response of both normal and osteoporotic bone was investigated by implementing their respective material properties in the model. Physiological loading simulating the peak load during standing, walking, and stair climbing was investigated. The results showed that the fixation assembly was the prime load bearing component for this configuration of devices. Within the fixation assembly, the bone screws were found to have the highest stresses in the fixation assembly for all the loading conditions. Whereas the stresses within the AMTD were significantly below the maximum yield strength of the device's polymeric blend material. Furthermore, this study also investigated the performance of different fixation assembly materials and found Ti-6Al-4V to be the optimal material choice from those included in this study

Case Report: Whole Exome Sequencing Revealed Disease-Causing Variants in Two Genes in a Patient With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, Hyperactivity, Sleep and Gastrointestinal Disturbances

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by difficulties in communication, social interaction and behavior, and may be accompanied by other medical or psychiatric conditions. Patients with ASD and comorbidities are often difficult to diagnose because of the tendency to consider the multiple symptoms as the presentation of a complicated syndromic form. This view influences variant filtering which might ignore causative variants for specific clinical features shown by the patient. Here we report on a male child diagnosed with ASD, showing cognitive and motor impairments, stereotypies, hyperactivity, sleep, and gastrointestinal disturbances. The analysis of whole exome sequencing (WES) data with bioinformatic tools for oligogenic diseases helped us to identify two major previously unreported pathogenetic variants: a maternally inherited missense variant (p.R4122H) in HUWE1, an ubiquitin protein ligase associated to X-linked intellectual disability and ASD; and a de novo stop variant (p.Q259X) in TPH2, encoding the tryptophan hydroxylase 2 enzyme involved in serotonin synthesis and associated with susceptibility to attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). TPH2, expressed in central and peripheral nervous tissues, modulates various physiological functions, including gut motility and sleep. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case presenting with ASD, cognitive impairment, sleep, and gastrointestinal disturbances linked to both HUWE1 and TPH2 genes. Our findings could contribute to the existing knowledge on clinical and genetic diagnosis of patients with ASD presentation with comorbidities

Three-dimensional reconstruction of coronary arteries and plaque morphology using CT angiography - comparison and registration with IVUS

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to present a new methodology for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of coronary arteries and plaque morphology using Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA). METHODS: The methodology is summarized in six stages: 1) pre-processing of the initial raw images, 2) rough estimation of the lumen and outer vessel wall borders and approximation of the vessel’s centerline, 3) manual adaptation of plaque parameters, 4) accurate extraction of the luminal centerline, 5) detection of the lumen - outer vessel wall borders and calcium plaque region, and 6) finally 3D surface construction. RESULTS: The methodology was compared to the estimations of a recently presented Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) plaque characterization method. The correlation coefficients for calcium volume, surface area, length and angle vessel were 0.79, 0.86, 0.95 and 0.88, respectively. Additionally, when comparing the inner and outer vessel wall volumes of the reconstructed arteries produced by IVUS and CTA the observed correlation was 0.87 and 0.83, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicated that the proposed methodology is fast and accurate and thus it is likely in the future to have applications in research and clinical arena
