Who Learns from Collaborative Digital Projects? Cultivating Critical Consciousness and Metacognition to Democratize Digital Literacy Learning
Collaborative group work is common in writing classrooms, especially ones assigning digital projects. While a wealth of scholarship theorizes collaboration and advocates for specific collaborative pedagogies, writing studies has yet to address the ways in which privilege tied to race, gender, class, and other identity characteristics replicates itself within student groups by shaping the responsibilities individual group members assume, thereby affecting students\u27 opportunities for learning. Such concerns about equity are especially pressing where civically and professionally valuable twenty-first century digital literacies are concerned. This article uses theories of cultural capital and the participation gap to (1) analyze role uptake in case studies of diverse student groups and (2) suggest ways to expand writing studies\u27 current use of metacognition to address such inequities
Binary Evolution Constraints from Luminosity Functions of LMXBs
The formation and evolution of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) is not well
understood. The properties of a population of LMXBs depend on a number of
uncertain aspects of binary evolution, and population studies offers a
relatively new way of probing binary interactions. We have studied the shape of
the faint end of the X-ray luminosity function (LF) of LMXBs in nearby galaxies
with Chandra and in the Milky Way using the Swift all-sky monitor. We find a
clear difference between the LF of LMXBs in globular clusters (GCs) and those
outside, with a relative lack of faint GC sources. This indicates a difference
in the composition of the two populations.Comment: Conference Proceedings for the International Conference on Binaries,

Within-subjects changes in lipreading and visual enhancement among older adults
After 10-14 years, 14 older adults were retested to assess changes in Vonly ability and VE. Results showed no significant declines, however, strong correlations were found between previous V-only performance and current Vonly performance, as well as between previous VE and current VE, although not as strong. Age and PTA were not predictors of changes in lipreading or VE. In addition, older adults perform less well on auditory-only tasks over time
Tagging, Folksonomy & Co - Renaissance of Manual Indexing?
This paper gives an overview of current trends in manual indexing on the Web.
Along with a general rise of user generated content there are more and more
tagging systems that allow users to annotate digital resources with tags
(keywords) and share their annotations with other users. Tagging is frequently
seen in contrast to traditional knowledge organization systems or as something
completely new. This paper shows that tagging should better be seen as a
popular form of manual indexing on the Web. Difference between controlled and
free indexing blurs with sufficient feedback mechanisms. A revised typology of
tagging systems is presented that includes different user roles and knowledge
organization systems with hierarchical relationships and vocabulary control. A
detailed bibliography of current research in collaborative tagging is included.Comment: Preprint. 12 pages, 1 figure, 54 reference
Characterization of the anticipated synchronization regime in the coupled FitzHugh--Nagumo model for neurons
We characterize numerically the regime of anticipated synchronization in the
coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo model for neurons. We consider two neurons, coupled
unidirectionally (in a master-slave configuration), subject to the same random
external forcing and with a recurrent inhibitory delayed connection in the
slave neuron. We show that the scheme leads to anticipated synchronization, a
regime in which the slave neuron fires the same train of pulses as the master
neuron, but earlier in time. We characterize the synchronization in the
parameter space (coupling strength, anticipation time) and introduce several
quantities to measure the degree of synchronization.Comment: 8 pages. Proceedings of the conference on "Stochastic Systems: From

Moths of the Douglas Lake Region (Emmet and Cheboygan Counties), Michigan: III. Thyatiridae, Drepanidae, Lasiocampidae, Notodontidae, Lymantriidae (Lepidoptera)
(excerpt)
The first list of Lepidoptera for the Douglas Lake region (Welch 1915) included 12 species in the group of five families for which 55 species are now reported. This 358% increase ronly in part the result of enlarging the\u27 \u27region to include all of the two counties which share the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan) compares with an increase of 356\u274:- in the families Sphingidae-Ctenuchidae (Voss 1970) and 623% in the Noctuidae (Voss 1981). Only the Geometridae remain to complete recording the consider- able expansion of our knowledge of the local macro1epidopteran fauna over the past 70 years
