    A non-hydrolytic sol-gel approach for the preparation of MgxAl2(1-x)Ti(1+x)O5 powders

    The study of non-hydrolytic reactions for the synthesis of MgxAl2(1-x)Ti(1+x)O5 solid solution with x = 0.6 is reported. The reagents chosen were Al(OsBu)(3), Ti(OiPr)(4), TiCl4 and Mg(NO3)(2).6H(2)O in toluene. The reactions were followed using C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Sol-gel synthesized powders were calcined in air at 300, 500, 1000, and 1200degreesC for 1 h. The powders were analysed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) demonstrating the formation of a Mg0.6Al0.8Ti1.6O5 phase in samples treated at the higher calcination temperature

    This research examine the effect of Budget goal clarity, Decentralization and Public accountability on SKPD managerial performance. The population on this research were SKPD at Indragiri Hulu, and sample was determined based on judgement sampling method total 116 and use slovin formula, so that with 54 respondents. Collected with a direct survey using questionnaire that sent to Top and Middle manager at every selected SKPD in the region of Padang. Multiple regression analysis are used as analysis method with using Statistical Package For Social Science (SPSS) as the tools. This research proves that 1) Budget goal clarity significant positive impact on SKPD managerial performance (H1 accepted), 2) Decentralization significant negative impact on SKPD managerial performance (H2 rejected), 3) Public accountability significant negative impact on SKPD managerial performance (H3 rejected). From this research we can suggest that: 1) For all unit of government in Indragiri Hulu region to increase the implementation of budget goal clarity, decentralization and public accountability. It will give a good impact on managerial performances at the SKPD. 2) For future research, it is better to use a direct interview method to the respondent. So that the answer collected from the respondent are more clearly. 3) For future researcher, it is better to add the other related variable.Keywords: Budget goal clarity, Decentralization, Public accountability, Manajerial performance

    Silica containing composite anion exchange membranes by sol–gel synthesis: a short review

    This short review summarizes the literature on composite anion exchange membranes (AEM) containing an organo-silica network formed by sol-gel chemistry. The article covers AEM for diffusion dialysis (DD), for electrochemical energy technologies including fuel cells and redox flow batteries, and for electrodialysis. By applying a vast variety of organically modified silica compounds (ORMOSIL), many composite AEM reported in the last 15 years are based on poly (vinylalcohol) (PVA) or poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) used as polymer matrix. The most stringent requirements are high permselectivity and water flux for DD membranes, while high ionic conductivity is essential for electrochemical applications. Furthermore, the alkaline stability of AEM for fuel cell applications remains a challenging problem that is not yet solved. Possible future topics of investigation on composite AEM containing an organo-silica network are also discussed

    A comparison of video-based interventions to Ttach data entry to adults with intellectual disabilities : a replication and extension

    Researchers have demonstrated that video-based interventions are effective at teaching a variety of skills to individuals with intellectual disabilities. To replicate and extend this line of research, we initially planned to compare the effects of video modeling and video prompting on the acquisition of a novel work skill (i.e., data entry) in two adults with moderate intellectual disabilities using an alternating treatment design. When both interventions failed to improve performance, the instructors sequentially introduced a least-to-most instructor-delivered prompting procedure. The results indicated that the introduction of instructor prompts considerably increased correct responding in one participant during video modeling and in both participants during video prompting. Overall, the study suggests that practitioners should consider incorporating instructor-delivered prompts from the onset, or at least when no improvements in performance are observed, when using video-based interventions to teach new work skills to individuals with intellectual disabilities

    Stability of proton exchange membranes in phosphate buffer for enzymatic fuel cell application: hydration, conductivity and mechanical properties

    Proton-conducting ionomers are widespread materials for application in electrochemical energy storage devices. However, their properties depend strongly on operating conditions. In bio-fuel cells with a separator membrane, the swelling behavior as well as the conductivity need to be optimized with regard to the use of buffer solutions for the stability of the enzyme catalyst. This work presents a study of the hydrolytic stability, conductivity and mechanical behavior of different proton exchange membranes based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and sulfonated poly(phenyl sulfone) (SPPSU) ionomers in phosphate buffer solution. The results show that the membrane stability can be adapted by changing the casting solvent (DMSO, water or ethanol) and procedures, including a crosslinking heat treatment, or by blending the two ionomers. A comparison with Nafion(TM) shows the different behavior of this ionomer versus SPEEK membranes

    Crosslinked SPEEK membranes: Mechanical, thermal, and hydrothermal properties

    The thermal and mechanical behavior, the water uptake (WU), and water diffusion coefficient of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)membranes annealed at 180 degrees C for different times were explored by high-resolution thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical tensile tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, and WU measurements. The mechanical and thermal stability increased with the thermal treatment time, i.e., with the degree of crosslinking. The effect of residual casting solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), on the WU within SPEEK was probed. In presence of residual DMSO, crosslinked SPEEK exhibited higher water sorption at low and medium relative humidity (RH), and lower water sorption at high RH. These membranes have properties well adapted to fuel cell applications

    Is there an unmet medical need for improved hearing restoration?

    Hearing impairment, the most prevalent sensory deficit, affects more than 466 million people worldwide (WHO). We presently lack causative treatment for the most common form, sensorineural hearing impairment; hearing aids and cochlear implants (CI) remain the only means of hearing restoration. We engaged with CI users to learn about their expectations and their willingness to collaborate with health care professionals on establishing novel therapies. We summarize upcoming CI innovations, gene therapies, and regenerative approaches and evaluate the chances for clinical translation of these novel strategies. We conclude that there remains an unmet medical need for improving hearing restoration and that we are likely to witness the clinical translation of gene therapy and major CI innovations within this decade

    Functional estrogen receptors of red blood cells. Do they influence intracellular signaling?

    Background/Aims: Estrogen could play a key role in the mechanisms underlying sex-related disparity in the incidence of thrombotic events. We investigated whether estrogen receptors (ERs) were expressed in human red blood cells (RBCs), and if they affected cell signaling of erythrocyte constitutive isoform of endothelial NO-synthase (eNOS) and nitric oxide (NO) release. Methods: RBCs from 29 non-smoker volunteers (15 males and 14 females) aged between 20 and 40 years were analyzed by cytometry and western blot. In particular, content and distribution of ER-α and ER-β, tyrosine kinases and eNOS phosphorylation and NO release were analyzed. Results: We demonstrated that: i) both ER-α and ER-β were expressed by RBCs; ii) they were both functionally active; and iii) ERs distribution and function were different in males and females. In particular, ERs modulated eNOS phosphorylation and NO release in RBCs from both sexes, but they induced the phosphorylation of specific tyrosine residues of kinases linked to eNOS activation and NO release in the RBCs from females only. Conclusion: Collectively, these data suggest that ERs could play a critical role in RBC intracellular signaling. The possible implication of this signaling in sex-linked risk disparity in human cardiovascular diseases, e.g. in thrombotic events, may not be ruled out

    Imatinib interferes with survival of multi drug resistant Kaposi’s sarcoma cells.

    Multi drug resistance (MDR) is defined as the ability of tumor cells to become resistant to unrelated drugs. Tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of certain tumors. In particular, imatinib inhibits Bcr-Abl kinase activity, c-kit and the phosphorylation of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors. In this work, we show that imatinib inhibits PDGF phosphorylation not only in wt Kaposi sarcoma (KS) but also in multi drug resistant KS cells. This was associated with an increased apoptosis in wt cells and an increased autophagy in MDR-KS cells. These data add new insights to the possible use of imatinib in the overcoming of MDR in KS cells

    Towards specific T–H relationships: FRIBAS database for better characterization of RC and URM buildings

    FRIBAS database is an open access database composed of the characteristics of 312 buildings (71 masonry, 237 reinforced concrete and 4 mixed types). It collects and harmonizes data from different surveys performed on buildings in the Basilicata and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions (Southern and Northeastern Italy, respectively). Each building is defined by 37 parameters related to the building and foundation soil characteristics. The building and soil fundamental periods were experimentally estimated based on ambient noise measurements. FRIBAS gave us the opportunity to study the influence of the main characteristics of buildings and the soil-building interaction effect to their structural response. In this study, we have used the FRIBAS dataset to investigate how the building period varies as a function of construction materials and soil types. Our results motivate the need of going beyond a 'one-fits-all' numerical period-height (T-H) relationship for generic building typologies provided by seismic codes, towards specific T-H relationships that account for both soil and building typologies
