Patterns of rapid weight loss in elite sambo athletes
Background: Rapid weight loss (RWL) is commonly practiced in combat sports. Both magnitude and methods used to induce RWL are largely similar among combat sports, but currently, there is no data on RWL methodology used by sambo athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine RWL procedures sambo athletes apply to lose weight rapidly. Methods: The sample consisted of 199 participants, of which 132 males and 67 females who participated in the World Sambo Championship 2020 held in Novi Sad, Serbia. Each participant received RWL questionnaire that was available in multiple languages, and every participant was instructed how to fill it out. Results: Almost 87% of sambo participants declared to have intentionally cut their weight prior to the competition, whereby 5.27 kg (SD: ±7.57) was lost. Gradual dieting, sauna use and skipping meals were the most dominant methods used to reduce weight prior to competition while more extreme methods of RWL such as the use of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills and vomiting were also implemented but by much smaller fragment of the participants involved. Conclusions: Findings from our study largely match with previously conducted RWL studies in terms of prevalence, magnitude and methods used by combat sport athletes, especially in judo and wrestling. Knowing the hazardous consequences of RWL, alternative methods of sustainable weight loss should be considered
Emerging drugs for the treatment of vitiligo
Introduction: Vitiligo is a relatively common autoimmune depigmenting disorder of the skin. There has been a great advance in understanding the pathological basis, which has led to the development and utilization of various new molecules in treating vitiligo. This review aims at a comprehensively describing the treatments available and the emerging treatment aspects and the scope for future developments. Areas covered: This study comprehensively summarizes the current concepts in the pathogenesis of vitiligo with special focus on the cytokine and signaling pathways, which are the targets for newer drugs. JAK kinase signaling pathways and the cytokines involved are the focus of vitiligo treatment in current research, followed by antioxidant mechanisms and repigmenting mechanisms. Topical immunosuppressants may be an alternative to steroids in localized vitiligo. Newer repigmenting agents like basic fibroblast growth factors, afamelanotide have been included and a special emphasis is laid on the upcoming targeted immunotherapy. Expert opinion: The treatment of vitiligo needs to be multimodal with emphasis on targeting different limbs of the pathogenesis. Topical and oral JAK inhibitors are the most promising new class of drugs currently available for treating vitiligo and acts best in conjunction with NB-UVB
Efficacy of Surgical Excision for Nevus Sebaceous - Vietnamese Experience
BACKGROUND: Nevus Sebaceous (NS) is hamartoma predominantly composed of sebaceous glands and is classified as a type of epidermal nevus. In most case, clinical manifestation of NS is typical, so histopathology examination is important only in atypical lesions for its risk of malignancy. Clinical symptoms are plaques or papules (100%), appearing in the head area (100%) with smooth surface (65.8%), usually with hair loss (60.7%). The histopathology is mostly characterized by the image of sebaceous gland hyperplasia (100%), no hair follicles (60.7%) or immature follicles (14.3%).
AIM: The aim of our study is describing clinical and histopathological manifestation, make diagnosis and evaluate the best therapy.
METHODS: Our study recruited 38 patients with NS, 3 patients (7.9%) with atypical aspects. All patients were treated by surgical excision.
RESULTS: Complications as hair loss and infections were reported in 36.8% patients. No patients had recurrence after one year of treatment.
CONCLUSION: Based upon our experience, surgery is cheap, simple, associated with high aesthetics effectiveness and low recurrence rate, proposing as the first choice for treatment of NS
Determination of Specific Electrocatalytic Sites in the Oxidation of Small Molecules on Crystalline Metal Surfaces
The identification of active sites in electrocatalytic reactions is part of the elucidation of mechanisms of catalyzed reactions on solid surfaces. However, this is not an easy task, even for apparently simple reactions, as we sometimes think the oxidation of adsorbed CO is. For surfaces consisting of non-equivalent sites, the recognition of specific active sites must consider the influence that facets, as is the steps/defect on the surface of the catalyst, cause in its neighbors; one has to consider the electrochemical environment under which the “active sites” lie on the surface, meaning that defects/steps on the surface do not partake in chemistry by themselves. In this paper, we outline the recent efforts in understanding the close relationships between site-specific and the overall rate and/or selectivity of electrocatalytic reactions. We analyze hydrogen adsorption/desorption, and electro-oxidation of CO, methanol, and ammonia. The classical topic of asymmetric electrocatalysis on kinked surfaces is also addressed for glucose electro-oxidation. Compared to the higher fungi (Dikarya), taxonomic and evolutionary studies on the basal clades of fungi are fewer in number. Thus, the generic boundaries and higher ranks in the basal clades of fungi are poorly known. Recent DNA based taxonomic studies have provided reliable and accurate information. It is therefore necessary to compile all available information since basal clades genera lack updated checklists or outlines. Recently, Tedersoo et al. (MycoKeys 13:1--20, 2016) accepted Aphelidiomycota and Rozellomycota in Fungal clade. Thus, we regard both these phyla as members in Kingdom Fungi. We accept 16 phyla in basal clades viz. Aphelidiomycota, Basidiobolomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Calcarisporiellomycota, Caulochytriomycota, Chytridiomycota, Entomophthoromycota, Glomeromycota, Kickxellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Mortierellomycota, Mucoromycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Olpidiomycota, Rozellomycota and Zoopagomycota. Thus, 611 genera in 153 families, 43 orders and 18 classes are provided with details of classification, synonyms, life modes, distribution, recent literature and genomic data. Moreover, Catenariaceae Couch is proposed to be conserved, Cladochytriales Mozl.-Standr. is emended and the family Nephridiophagaceae is introduced
Characterisation of B killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor genes and telomeric and centromeric motifs in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation donors in Vojvodina, Serbia
The outcome of HSCT is strongly influenced by the genetic similarity or
identity in the HLA genes that affects the incidence of graft-versus-host
disease (GvHD). Successful allogeneic HSCT, however, depends also on T-cell
mediated graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) effect, in which donor-derived T cells
and natural killer (NK) cells kill these malignant cells in the patient,
therefore playing a crucial role in relapse prevention. The aim of this study
was to make the predictive analysis of the structure and distribution of B
KIR alleles and centromeric and telomeric KIR genotypes in HSCT donors in
Vojvodina with regard to their contribution to protection from relapse. A
total of 124 first-degree relatives of patients with hematological
malignancies were examined for the presence or absence of 15 KIR genes by
using of PCR-SSO technique with Luminex xMap technology. The percentage of
individuals carrying each KIR gene, centromeric and telomeric KIR haplotypes
and genotypes was determined by direct counting. Sixty two percent of the
HSCT donors in Vojvodina carry A KIR haplotype, while nearly 38% carry B KIR
haplotype. The distribution of B KIR genes showed that among 124 studied HSCT
donors, 31(25%) do not carry none of the KIR genes belonging to B group,
71.77% of donors have two or more B KIR genes, 61.29% of them carry KIR 2DL2
and 2DS2 or more B KIR genes. The analysis of centromeric and telomeric KIR
genotypes, showed that Cen-A1/Tel-A1 genotype had a highest frequency of
51.47% and Cen-B2/Tel-B1 the lowest frequency of 1.30%. The usage of donor
KIR B gene content and centromeric and telomeric KIR gene structure could be
used in development of a simple algorithm to identify donors who will provide
the most protection against the relapse in related HSC transplants
Computationally Probing the Performance of Hybrid, Heterogeneous, and Homogeneous Iridium?Based Catalysts for Water Oxidation
An attractive strategy to improve the performance of water oxidation catalysts would be to anchor a homogeneous molecular catalyst on a heterogeneous solid surface to create a hybrid catalyst. The idea of this combined system is to take advantage of the individual properties of each of the two catalyst components. We use Density Functional Theory to determine the stability and activity of a model hybrid water oxidation catalyst consisting of a dimeric Ir complex attached on the IrO2(110) surface through two oxygen atoms. We find that homogeneous catalysts can be bound to its matrix oxide without losing significant activity. Hence, designing hybrid systems that benefit from both the high tunability of activity of homogeneous catalysts and the stability of heterogeneous systems seems feasible
