GCC-Plugin for Automated Accelerator Generation and Integration on Hybrid FPGA-SoCs
In recent years, architectures combining a reconfigurable fabric and a
general purpose processor on a single chip became increasingly popular. Such
hybrid architectures allow extending embedded software with application
specific hardware accelerators to improve performance and/or energy efficiency.
Aiding system designers and programmers at handling the complexity of the
required process of hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning is an important
issue. Current methods are often restricted, either to bare-metal systems, to
subsets of mainstream programming languages, or require special coding
guidelines, e.g., via annotations. These restrictions still represent a high
entry barrier for the wider community of programmers that new hybrid
architectures are intended for. In this paper we revisit HW/SW partitioning and
present a seamless programming flow for unrestricted, legacy C code. It
consists of a retargetable GCC plugin that automatically identifies code
sections for hardware acceleration and generates code accordingly. The proposed
workflow was evaluated on the Xilinx Zynq platform using unmodified code from
an embedded benchmark suite.Comment: Presented at Second International Workshop on FPGAs for Software

Bioeconomy: The Innovative Twin of Sustainability
With its far-reaching promise of a new synthesis of ecology and economy, the concept of the bioeconomy is a shimmering, ambiguous term in need of ethical and conceptual interpretation. The paper identifies potentials and strategies of the bioeconomy for a knowledge-based energy and raw material turnaround, which, by turning away from fossil resources, can at the same time contribute significantly to waste prevention. The focus is on ethical criteria for a responsible bioeconomy. In terms of environmental ethics, this approach has exemplary significance because it currently represents the most prominent concept for unfolding and operationalizing the innovative side of sustainability. The paper therefore argues for an expanded concept of the bioeconomy that includes the reproductive capacity of nature, for which soil conservation is a strong example. This will be unfolded with the proposal of an ethics of innovation
Current challenges to the concept of sustainability
In this paper we discuss current challenges to the sustainability concept. This article focuses on seven dimensions of the concept. These dimensions are crucial for understanding sustainability. Even today, the literature contains basic misunderstandings about these seven dimensions. This article sketches such fallacies in the context of global and planetary sustainability. The sustainability concept has been criticized as a content-empty âfuzzy notionâ or non-committal âall-purpose glueâ. This article thus has a critical intention of reflecting the sustainability concept accurately. The aim is to contribute a better understanding of the concept
Asymptomatic liver segment herniation through a postoperative defect in the right hemidiaphragm following aortic bypass graft surgery
We present a 16-year-old girl with asymptomatic liver segment herniation following aortic graft surgery for atypical coarctation of the aorta. The defect in the right hemidiaphragm was caused by the implantation of an ascending thoracic aorta to upper abdominal aortic bypass graft. The differential diagnosis of diaphragmatic defects as well as the role of various imaging modalities in establishing the diagnosis are discusse
AbstractThe essay investigates the moral and regulatory aspects of the energy transition. It starts with an analysis of the delayed exit from fossil-fuel energies, primarily caused by fracking and the enduring attractiveness of coal. In a second step, the essay formulates ethical instruments for evaluating the energy transition, focusing on the methodology of risk comparison and the long-term problems of nuclear waste. The essay pleads for a strategy of eco-sufficiency as a condition of a successful exit from nuclear and fossil-fuel energies. It also discusses the role of the churches in this transition process. The essay drafts elements of a proactive and cooperative design of the processes of transition in the face of actor constellations, structures of governance and problems of public good. It aims at a âtransformation by designâ instead of a âtransformation by disaster.
