Propagation considerations in land mobile satellite transmission
It appears likely that the Land Mobile Satellite Services (LMSS) will be authorized by the FCC for operation in the 800 to 900 MHz (UHF) and possibly near 1500 MHz (L-band). Propagation problems are clearly an important factor in the effectiveness of this service, but useful measurements are few, and produced contradictory interpretations. A first order overview of existing measurements is presented with particular attention to the first two NASA balloon to mobile vehicle propagation experiments. Some physical insight into the interpretation of propagation effects in LMSS transmissions is provided
Nonclassicality filters and quasiprobabilities
Necessary and sufficient conditions for the nonclassicality of bosonic
quantum states are formulated by introducing nonclassicality filters and
nonclassicality quasiprobability distributions. Regular quasiprobabilities are
constructed from characteristic functions which can be directly sampled by
balanced homodyne detection. Their negativities uncover the nonclassical
effects of general quantum states. The method is illustrated by visualizing the

Statistical uncertainty in quantum optical photodetection measurements
We present a complete statistical analysis of quantum optical measurement
schemes based on photodetection. Statistical distributions of quantum
observables determined from a finite number of experimental runs are
characterized with the help of the generating function, which we derive using
the exact statistical description of raw experimental outcomes. We use the
developed formalism to point out that the statistical uncertainty results in
substantial limitations of the determined information on the quantum state:
though a family of observables characterizing the quantum state can be safely
evaluated from experimental data, its further use to obtain the expectation
value of some operators generates exploding statistical errors. These issues
are discussed using the example of phase-insensitive measurements of a single
light mode. We study reconstruction of the photon number distribution from
photon counting and random phase homodyne detection. We show that utilization
of the reconstructed distribution to evaluate a simple well-behaved observable,
namely the parity operator, encounters difficulties due to accumulation of
statistical errors. As the parity operator yields the Wigner function at the
phase space origin, this example also demonstrates that transformation between
various experimentally determined representations of the quantum state is a

Neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis and the site of the r process
If the r process occurs deep within a type II supernova, probably the most popular of the proposed sites, abundances of r-process elements may be altered by the intense neutrino flux. We point out that the effects would be especially pronounced for eight isotopes that can be efficiently synthesized by the neutrino reactions following r-process freeze-out. We show that the observed abundances of these isotopes are entirely consistent with neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis, strongly arguing for a supernova r-process site. The deduced neutrino fluences place stringent constraints on the freeze-out radius and dynamic time scale of the r process
Raman-assisted Rabi resonances in two-mode cavity QED
The dynamics of a vibronic system in a lossy two-mode cavity is studied, with
the first mode being resonant to the electronic transition and the second one
being nearly resonant due to Raman transitions. We derive analytical solutions
for the dynamics of this system. For a properly chosen detuning of the second
mode from the exact Raman resonance, we obtain conditions that are closely
related to the phenomenon of Rabi resonance as it is well known in laser
physics. Such resonances can be observed in the spontaneous emission spectra,
where the spectrum of the second mode in the case of weak Raman coupling is

Verifying continuous-variable entanglement in finite spaces
Starting from arbitrary Hilbert spaces, we reduce the problem to verify
entanglement of any bipartite quantum state to finite dimensional subspaces.
Hence, entanglement is a finite dimensional property. A generalization for

Homodyne detection for measuring internal quantum correlations of optical pulses
A new method is described for determining the quantum correlations at
different times in optical pulses by using balanced homodyne detection. The
signal pulse and sequences of ultrashort test pulses are superimposed, where
for chosen distances between the test pulses their relative phases and
intensities are varied from measurement to measurement. The correlation
statistics of the signal pulse is obtained from the time-integrated difference

Free-space quantum links under diverse weather conditions
Free-space optical communication links are promising channels for
establishing secure quantum communication. Here we study the transmission of
nonclassical light through a turbulent atmospheric link under diverse weather
conditions, including rain or haze. To include these effects, the theory of
light transmission through atmospheric links in the elliptic-beam approximation
presented by Vasylyev et al. [D. Vasylyev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 090501
(2016); arXiv:1604.01373] is further generalized.It is demonstrated, with good
agreement between theory and experiment, that low-intensity rain merely
contributes additional deterministic losses, whereas haze also introduces
additional beam deformations of the transmitted light. Based on these results,
we study theoretically the transmission of quadrature squeezing and Gaussian
