On the ill/well-posedness and nonlinear instability of the magneto-geostrophic equations
We consider an active scalar equation that is motivated by a model for
magneto-geostrophic dynamics and the geodynamo. We prove that the non-diffusive
equation is ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard in Sobolev spaces. In contrast,
the critically diffusive equation is well-posed. In this case we give an
example of a steady state that is nonlinearly unstable, and hence produces a
dynamo effect in the sense of an exponentially growing magnetic field.Comment: We have modified the definition of Lipschitz well-posedness, in order
to allow for a possible loss in regularity of the solution ma
High current and low q95 scenario studies for FAST in the view of ITER and DEMO
The Fusion Advanced Study Torus (FAST) has been proposed as a possible European satellite, in view of ITER and DEMO, in order to: a) explore plasma wall interaction in reactor relevant conditions b) test tools and scenarios for safe and reliable tokamak operation up to the border of stability c) address fusion plasmas with a significant population of fast particles. A new FAST scenario has been designed focusing on low-q operation, at plasma current IP=10 MA, toroidal field BT=8.5T, with a q95=2.3 that would correspond to IP=20 MA in ITER. The flat-top
of the discharge can last a couple of seconds (i.e. half the diffusive resistive time and twice the energy confinement
time), and is limited by the heating of the toroidal field coils. A preliminary evaluation of the end-of-pulse temperatures and of the electromagnetic forces acting on the central solenoid pack and poloidal field coils has been performed. Moreover, a VDE plasma disruption has been simulated and the maximum total vertical force applied on the vacuum vessel has been estimated
Formal Model Engineering for Embedded Systems Using Real-Time Maude
This paper motivates why Real-Time Maude should be well suited to provide a
formal semantics and formal analysis capabilities to modeling languages for
embedded systems. One can then use the code generation facilities of the tools
for the modeling languages to automatically synthesize Real-Time Maude
verification models from design models, enabling a formal model engineering
process that combines the convenience of modeling using an informal but
intuitive modeling language with formal verification. We give a brief overview
six fairly different modeling formalisms for which Real-Time Maude has provided
the formal semantics and (possibly) formal analysis. These models include
behavioral subsets of the avionics modeling standard AADL, Ptolemy II
discrete-event models, two EMF-based timed model transformation systems, and a
modeling language for handset software.Comment: In Proceedings AMMSE 2011, arXiv:1106.596
Growth, competition and cooperation in spatial population genetics
We study an individual based model describing competition in space between
two different alleles. Although the model is similar in spirit to classic
models of spatial population genetics such as the stepping stone model, here
however space is continuous and the total density of competing individuals
fluctuates due to demographic stochasticity. By means of analytics and
numerical simulations, we study the behavior of fixation probabilities,
fixation times, and heterozygosity, in a neutral setting and in cases where the
two species can compete or cooperate. By concluding with examples in which
individuals are transported by fluid flows, we argue that this model is a
natural choice to describe competition in marine environments.Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures; revised version including a section with
results in the presence of fluid flow
Aging processes in reversible reaction-diffusion systems
Reversible reaction-diffusion systems display anomalous dynamics
characterized by a power-law relaxation toward stationarity. In this paper we
study in the aging regime the nonequilibrium dynamical properties of some model
systems with reversible reactions. Starting from the exact Langevin equations
describing these models, we derive expressions for two-time correlation and
autoresponse functions and obtain a simple aging behavior for these quantities.
The autoresponse function is thereby found to depend on the specific nature of
the chosen perturbation of the system.Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
