An Exploratory Study of a Theory-Based Comic Strip to Counteract Misinformation About Covid-19 Vaccine Among Adult Social Media Users in the United States.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic found a fertile ground for the spread of online misinformation, with emphasis on social media. Avoiding misinformation spread requires rapid, engaging, and effective science communication in a clear, easy-to-understand, attractive, and entertaining format that can be readily shared online. Comics fulfill these characteristics, being a promising tool to fight misinformation on social media.
The goals of this study were: 1) Develop a novel narrative comic strip to promote recognition of misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine among adult social media users (ages 18-65) based in the United States, drawing on the existing research on the Health Belief Model and Theory of Planned Behavior; 2.) Compare the comic strip evaluation and capacity to influence misinformation identification to those of an educational text about COVID-19 vaccination. 3a) Evaluate differences in the key outcomes (misinformation identification, and attractiveness, trust, perceived usefulness, willingness to share, and acceptance of each educational tool) across participants with varying demographic characteristics, health literacy levels, COVID-19 vaccination history, and demographic characteristics. 3b) Across the entire sample, evaluate the correlation between these constructs and health literacy, digital health literacy, vaccine attitudes, trust in science and health authorities, and social media use. Participants (N = 285) were recruited via social media advertisements and randomly assigned to the comic strip group (CS) (N = 92), educational text (TX) (N = 96), or a control 4 group (CL) (N = 97), which had not read any educational material.
An online survey accessed the main outcomes (misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines, evaluation of the educational tool (attractiveness, trust, perceived usefulness, willingness to share, and acceptance of the educational material). Participants also answered demographics questionnaires, COVID-19 vaccine concerns scale, and questionnaires on Health literacy, eHealth literacy, social media use, trust in health authorities and scientists, and COVID-19 vaccination history. Group CS answered questions regarding transportation into the narrative. There were no differences in misinformation identification between groups, possibly explained by a low sensibility of the misinformation identification instrument, timing of the data collection, and sensitiveness of the vaccination topic, subject to accrued attitudes, such as believing in misinformation.
Participants with lower health literacy in group TX scored less on the misinformation identification questionnaire than those with higher literacy, which was not observed in the CS group, indicating that the comic strip may benefit better individuals with low health literacy. Vaccine hesitant/ refusers’ misinformation identification scores seem to have been benefited by the comic strip. The comic strip was better evaluated for trust in its content and acceptance than the educational text. Still, misinformation identification scores were not correlated to any evaluation construct in both groups CS and TX. Transportation into the narrative was positively correlated with all comic strip evaluation constructs but not with the misinformation identification score. Future studies should focus on exploring different styles and sizes of comic strips, using more heterogenous sample and addressing different health topics
Social desirability can bias the parameters measured by self-report. The aims of this study were: a) to translate into Portuguese the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, which quantifies social desirability and; b) to evaluate its precision. The version was obtained through a process of translation and back translation. A test-retest was conducted, in which the scale was administered twice, with one-month interval, to Dietetics students (n = 57). A Wilcoxon matched pairs test verified if there was difference between the two applications. The Spearman correlation coefficient between the applications was calculated. The scores obtained were 13.6 ± 4.4 (median 13) in the first application, and 13.4 ± 5.3 (median 13) in the second application. There was no difference between the means of the two applications (z = 1.66; p = 0.10) and correlation between them was 0.82 (p = 0.0000001). The score obtained was similar to those obtained by students in developed countries, which suggests that translation did not modify the scale's original meaning. Precision was high and compatible with that one obtained with the original version. These results indicate that the Brazilian version of the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale is precise and adequate.O desejo de aceitação social (social desirability) pode enviesar os parâmetros medidos por auto-relato.
Physiological, performance, and nutritional profile of the Brazilian olympic wushu (kung-fu) team
Artioli, GG, Gualano, B, Franchini, E, Batista, RN, Polacow, VO, and Lancha, AH Jr. Physiological, performance, and nutritional profile of the Brazilian Olympic Wushu (kung-fu) team. J Strength Cond Res 23(1): 20-25, 2009-The purpose of the present study was to determine physiological, nutritional, and performance profiles of elite Olympic Wushu (kung-fu) athletes. Ten men and four women elite athletes took part in the study. They completed the following tests: body composition, nutritional assessment, upper-body Wingate Test, vertical jump, lumbar isometric strength, and flexibility. Blood lactate was determined at rest and after the Wingate Test. Blood lactate was also determined during a training session (combat and Taolu training). We found low body fat (men: 9.5 +/- 6.3%; women: 18.0 +/- 4.8%), high flexibility (sit-and-reach-men: 45.5 +/- 6.1 cm; women: 44.0 +/- 6.3 cm), high leg power (vertical jump-men: 37.7 +/- 8.4 cm; women: 32.3 +/- 1.1 cm), high lumbar isometric strength (men: 159 6 13 cm; women: 94 6 6 cm), moderate arm mean and peak power (Wingate Test-men: 4.1 +/- 0.4 and 5.8 +/- 0.5 W.kg(-1), respectively; women: 2.5 +/- 0.3 and 3.4 +/- 0.3 W.kg(-1), respectively), and elevated blood lactate after the Wingate Test (men: 10.8 +/- 2.0 mmol.L(-1); women: 10.2 +/- 2.0 mmol.L(-1)) and during training (combat: 12.0 +/- 1.8 mmol.L(-1); Taolu: 7.7 +/- 3.3 mmol.L(-1)). Men athletes consume a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, whereas women consume a moderate, high-carbohydrate diet. Energy consumption was markedly variable. In conclusion, Olympic Wushu seems to be a highly anaerobic-dependent combat sport. Low body fat, high flexibility, leg anaerobic power, isometric strength, and moderately high arm anaerobic power seem to be important for successful competitive performance.Aline Akiko KazurayamaBruna Mara Okano Sao PedroFAPESP[06/51293-4
What is adolescents' eating disorder risk behavior?
Maior padronização de termos e metodologia de avaliação permitiriam melhor comparação entre estudos epidemiológicos em diferentes localidades.OBJECTIVE: To characterize eating disorder (ED) risk behavior and its prevalence among adolescents in a review of national and international literature.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of creatine supplementation on glucose tolerance, muscle and hepatic glycogen content in rats submitted or not to physical activity for four and eight weeks. Wistar rats were divided in two groups: four and eight weeks of intervention. Afterwards, each group was subdivided in four subgroups, according to supplement intake and exercise: Sedentary Control; Trained Control; Supplemented Sedentary; and Supplemented Trained. The animals had free access to water and chow and the supplemented groups had two % of their diet as creatine monohydrated. The exercise groups swam for 40 minutes a day, four days a week, with two to five % of their body weight attached to their chests. After four and eight weeks, oral glucose tolerance tests were performed and both hepatic and muscle glycogen were determined. No significant differences were observed between groups on glucose tolerance and glycogen content in muscle and hepatic tissue. This study shows that creatine supplementation does not influence neither glucose tolerance nor glycogen concentrations in rats submitted or not to physical activity for four and eight weeks
