Health libraries have been established as publication support services. Despite its importance, there is currently no study about the services that these centers offer. The aim of this work is to understand the role that libraries play in institutional scientific publishing policies. The sample was taken from the National Catalogue of Hospitals, the list of libraries of the Catalogue of Periodicals in Spanish Health Sciences Libraries (c17) and the National Catalogue of Health Sciences Publications (CNCS). Subsequently, virtual health libraries have also been incorporated. From this list, a questionnaire about library staff and activities related to publication process was sent. We obtained a participation rate of 61.21%. The average number of technical personnel was 1.15 in virtual libraries and 0.81 in hospital libraries. The activities carried out have been: training activities (82.2%), counselling (90.1%), dissemination (30.7%) and evaluation (50.5%). The staff in libraries are insufficient. In many cases technicians assume an overwork of serving in both (virtual and hospital libraries). Most libraries offer training and research support services although there are differences between virtual and hospital ones. There is a relationship between the number of technicians and the publication support services

OBJECTIVE: The needs of permanent education for the health professionals have not been regulated. Taking into account the fact that libraries must assume a relevant role in this area, two of the libraries in the Extremadura’s Health Area decided to start some initiatives which meant the joint of all the formative activities by supplying ideas, work and resources. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The “decreto 189/2004”, on 14th december, which regulates the organic structure of the health areas in the region of Extremadura, establishes a unique management for each of those areas which will assume all the duties and will organise all the resources for each one. The development of those duties involves that services such as the library will be then called Area Library. Its economic management is centralised and its users are all the professionals belonging to that particular area. Taking advantage of the possibilities given by this structure, two libraries put forward the necessity of spreading all the information and materials produced by the professionals of both areas, as a result of the scientific and teaching activity. Therefore, they suggested their location in a specific space of the library web page, being both libraries responsible for their organization. RESULT: Since this project was started, there has been an increase in participacion of all the professionals. Their work is useful for other professionals and they feel that it is valued. The material, that would be lost otherwise, is compiled. CONCLUSIONS: In spite of being just the beginning of a project which has a long way to go, the experience is being quite positive. The libraries have become necessary points of reference for all the professionals and librarians who assume the new role of managing and organizing the information produced in our centres

Objective: To reflect the situation of the websites of the hospital libraries in Spain in 2003. Material and methods: The websites of the hospital libraries have been located through C-17 directory, various hospital directories and searching Google, Altavista and Alltheweb. It has been applied the questionnaire of evaluation of websites with pondered punctuation by Lluís Codina. Visibility indicators have been obtained as well as accessibility according TAW. Results: From the C-17 catalogue have been retrieved 176 hospital libraries, of which 13 have a website; we added to these other 19 websites found through other directories and search engines. Of those 32 websites, 2 were not active; the remaining 30 were analyzed. Five of them passed the Codina's test of level I. In the TAW priority level 1, the problems detected automatically oscillated between 0 and 77. Conclusions: The results show the low number of hospital libraries with websites on the internet. The websites quality should be improved following the recommendations of the checkup lists to evaluate digital resources on the internet. The scarce visibility of these webs, hinders greatly its localization. On the other hand, the low accessibility rate of these webs blocks their visualization to handicapped people
