    Towards a single-photon energy-sensitive pixel readout chip: pixel level ADCs and digital readout circuitry

    Unlike conventional CMOS imaging, a single\ud photon imager detects each individual photon impinging on\ud a detector, accumulating the number of photons during a\ud certain time window and not the charge generated by the all\ud the photons hitting the detector during said time window.\ud The latest developments in the semiconductor industry\ud are allowing faster and more complex chips to be designed\ud and manufactured. With these developments in mind we are\ud working towards the next step in single photon X-ray imaging:\ud energy sensitive pixel readout chips. The goal is not only\ud to detect and count individual photons, but also to measure\ud the charge deposited in the detector by each photon, and\ud consequently determine its energy. Basically, we are aiming\ud at a spectrometer-in-a-pixel, or a “color X-ray camera”.\ud The approach we have followed towards this goal is the\ud design of small analog-to-digital-converters at the pixel level,\ud together with a very fast digital readout from the pixels to\ud the periphery of the chip, where the data will be transmitted\ud off-chip.\ud We will present here the design and measurement on prototype\ud chips of two different 4-bit pixel level ADCs. The\ud ADCs are optimized for very small area and low power, with\ud a resolution of 4-bits and a sample rate of 1 Msample/s. The\ud readout architecture is based around current-mode sense\ud amplifiers and asynchronous token-passing between the pixels.\ud This is done in order to achieve event-by-event readout\ud and, consequently, on-line imaging. We need to read eventby-\ud event (photon-by-photon), because we cannot have memory\ud on the pixels due to obvious size constraints. We use\ud current-mode sense amplifiers because they perform very\ud well in similar applications as very fast static-RAM readout

    Jitter Limitations on Multi-Carrier Modulation

    A feasibility study is made of an OFDM system based on analog multipliers and integrate-and-dump blocks, targeted at Gb/s copper interconnects. The effective amplitude variation of the integrator output caused by jitter is explained in an intuitive way by introducing correlation plots. For a given rms jitter and error rate, high frequency carriers allow for less modulation depth than low frequency carriers. A jitter limit on the total system bit rate is calculated, which is a function of rms jitter, bandwidth, and specified system symbol error rate. It is concluded that, because of the high sensitivity to timing errors inherent in OFDM, traditional PAM systems with equal bandwidth and error rate are more feasible

    CMOS Transmitter using Pulse-Width Modulation Pre-Emphasis achieving 33dB Loss Compensation at 5-Gb/s

    A digital transmitter pre-emphasis technique is presented that is based on pulse-width modulation, instead of finite impulse response (FIR) filtering. The technique fits well to future high-speed low-voltage CMOS processes. A 0.13 /spl mu/m CMOS transmitter achieves more than 5 Gb/s (2-PAM) over 25 m of standard RG-58U low-end coaxial copper cable. The test chip compensates for up to 33 dB of channel loss at the fundamental signaling frequency (2.5 GHz), which is the highest figure compared to literature

    Accelerated migration of mangroves indicate large-scale saltwater intrusion in Amazon coastal wetlands

    Saltwater intrusion can dramatically transform coastal ecosystems, changing vegetation and impacting wildlife and human communities who rely on these natural resources. This phenomenon is difficult to measure over large and remote areas but can be inferred from changes in the distribution of salt-tolerant vegetation, such as mangroves, observable from satellite imagery. The northern coast of Brazil has the largest continuous mangrove forest in the world and very low human occupation. Even so, saltwater intrusion and changes to the coastline have been reported in this region, with potential consequences for mangrove carbon storage and for local livelihoods, but this has not been quantified due to the remoteness of the area. This study measured changes in mangrove distribution along the Northern Brazil coast in the state of Amapá, covering ca. 15,000 km2, over the last 38 years using Landsat satellite imagery. We found that mangrove in this area is highly dynamic, with significant gains and losses occurring over the study period, but with an overall net gain of 157 km2. Mangroves have been systematically expanding inland and this growth has accelerated close to the shoreline and at the head of tidal channels in the last two decades, indicating rapid and large-scale saltwater intrusion in this region. This phenomenon is likely driven by sea level rise, which also accelerated in this region in recent decades, but anthropogenic impacts such as buffalo grazing may also play an important role

    Effect of Pulsed or Continuous Delivery of Salt on Sensory Perception Over Short Time Intervals

    Salt in the human diet is a major risk factor for hypertension and many countries have set targets to reduce salt consumption. Technological solutions are being sought to lower the salt content of processed foods without altering their taste. In this study, the approach was to deliver salt solutions in pulses of different concentrations to determine whether a pulsed delivery profile affected sensory perception of salt. Nine different salt profiles were delivered by a Dynataste device and a trained panel assessed their saltiness using time–intensity and single-score sensory techniques. The profile duration (15 s) was designed to match eating conditions and the effects of intensity and duration of the pulses on sensory perception were investigated. Sensory results from the profiles delivered in either water or in a bouillon base were not statistically different. Maximum perceived salt intensities and the area under the time– intensity curves correlated well with the overall perceived saltiness intensity despite the stimulus being delivered as several pulses. The overall saltiness scores for profiles delivering the same overall amount of sodium were statistically not different from one another suggesting that, in this system, pulsed delivery did not enhance salt perception but the overall amount of salt delivered in each profile did affect sensory perception

    Modification of perceived beer bitterness intensity, character and temporal profile by hop aroma extract

    The effect of hop aroma on perceived bitterness intensity, character and temporal profile of beer was investigated. A hop aroma extract was added at 3 levels (0, 245, 490 mg/L) to beers at low, medium and high bitterness. Beers were evaluated for perceived bitterness intensity, harshness, roundedness and linger by a trained panel using a rank-rating technique at each bitterness level, with and without nose clips. The use of nose clips enabled the olfactory aspect to be decoupled from taste and mouthfeel aspects of bitterness perception. Results showed significant modification of perceived bitterness in beer by hop aroma depending on the inherent level of bitter-ness. These modifications were mainly driven by olfaction – in an example of taste-aroma interactions, as well as certain tactile sensations elicited by the hop aroma extract in the oral cavity. At low bitterness, beers with hop aroma added were perceived as more bitter, and of ‘rounded’ bitterness character relative to those without hop aroma. When judges used nose clips, this effect was completely eliminated but the sample was perceived to have a ‘harsh’ bitterness character. Conversely, at high bitterness, even when nose clips were used, judges still perceived beers containing hop aroma to be more bitter. These increases in bitterness perception with nose clips indicates the stimulating of other receptors, e.g. trigeminal receptors by hop aroma extract, which in tandem with the high bitterness, cause perceptual interactions enhancing bitterness intensity and also affecting bitterness character. Bitterness character attributes such as ‘round’ and ‘harsh’ were found to significantly depend on bitterness and aroma levels, with the second level of aroma addition (245 mg/L) giving a ‘rounded’ bitterness in low bitterness beers but ‘harsh’ bitterness in high bitterness beers. The impact of aroma on temporal bitterness was also confirmed with time-intensity measurements, and found to be mostly significant at the highest level of hop aroma addition (490 mg/L) in low bitterness beers. These findings represent a significant step forward in terms of understanding bitterness flavour perception and the wider impact of hop compounds on sensory perception

The design , implementation and performance of the electronic trigger system is described. A trigger efficiency of 99%\% was measured for ΜΌ\nu_{\mu} charged current events and 90%\% for neutral current e vents
