CENTRALIZED AND DECENTRALIZED APPROACHES TO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT – A CASE STUDY

Rapid urbanization and alteration in lifestyle occurring across the globe has resulted in an un-controlled generation of municipal solid waste. Various strategies have been tried and tested for obtaining a sustainable result in municipal solid waste management. Nonetheless, in most of the cases, they have created negative health, environment and socio-economic impacts, particularly in developing countries. Furthermore, the attitude of the common people towards the waste they generate, often acts as a barrier for adopting sustainable strategies for its management. Two main approaches are being followed in municipal solid waste management: a centralized and a decentralized approach. There exists an ongoing debate with regard to the efficiency of the two approaches. Taking the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in Kerala, India as a case to observe, this paper examines the merits, demerits, and practicability of these two approaches, and tries to suggest a sustainable model to curb the issue of municipal solid waste management in urban settings

PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND CYTOTOXICITY POTENTIAL OF PINEAPPLE EXTRACT ON ORAL CANCER CELL LINES

ABSTRACTObjective: This study aims at performing a preliminary phytochemical analysis to evaluate the phytochemical composition of pineapple extract andits cytotoxicity potential on oral cancer cell lines.Methods: Preliminary phytochemical analysis of pineapple extract was done, 3-(4, 5-Dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2, 5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromideassay for evaluating the cytotoxicity potential of the extract on oral cancer cell lines was performed.Results: Phytoconstituents such as flavonoids, coumarins, and phenols were present in the pineapple extract. The extract also exhibited increasedcytotoxicity with increased concentration.Conclusion: This study is conducted to see if pineapple extract is effective in treating oral cancer in a natural way instead of harmful treatments.Keywords: Cytotoxicity, Pineapple extract, Anticancer drug.Â

Gesture Controlled Robot For Human Detection

It is very important to locate survivors from collapsed buildings so that rescue operations can be arranged. Many lives are lost due to lack of competent systems to detect people in these collapsed buildings at the right time. So here we have designed a hand gesture controlled robot which is capable of detecting humans under these collapsed building parts. The proposed work can be used to access specific locations that are not humanly possible, and detect those humans trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Assessing Instagram Addiction and Social Media Dependency among Young Adults in Karnataka

This research paper investigates the extent and seriousness of Instagram addiction and social media dependency among young adults in Karnataka, India. The study utilized a cross-sectional survey design and collected data from 511 participants aged 18 to 25 years. To assess social media addiction and Instagram addiction, the researchers employed the Social Media Dependency Scale (SMDS) and The Instagram Addiction Scale (TIAS) respectively. Data analysis involved frequency and percentage analysis, cross-tabulation, Independent sample t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation analysis. The results revealed that a majority of participants demonstrated moderate to high levels of social media dependency and Instagram addiction. Furthermore, the study found variations in social media dependency and Instagram addiction based on factors such as gender, region, and locality of residence. It was also discovered that Instagram addiction showed a significant positive correlation with social media dependency. These findings emphasize the necessity for targeted interventions to address social media addiction and its impact on the mental health and overall well-being of young adults in Karnataka

Smart Shopping Carts to Increase Healthier Food Purchase: A Conjoint Experiment

Shopping carts, in general, should be suitable for carrying smart technology in the retail store environment. Also, a smart shopping cart can present verbal motivating stimuli to increase healthier food purchases. A conjoint experiment was used to test with a hypothetical purchasing task for young consumers (n=91) the potential of motivating stimulus on smart shopping carts to influence healthier purchases when buying frozen pizza. The results show a positive impact for all stimuli stemming from the smart shopping cart, three of which were health-based. This shows that stimuli revealing dynamic and personalized data through smart technology in a physical grocery retail setting have the potential to outperform traditional brand statements. Our conjoint experiment increased young consumers’ likelihood of choosing a healthier frozen pizza. This result demonstrates that verbal stimuli on smart shopping carts can function as motivating augmentals on young adult consumers’ healthier food purchases and are in line with the market positioning and customerservice focus of many retailers and brands today, emphasizing a social marketing standing
