An optimization method for the reduction of fertilization errors with centrifugal applicators
This paper discusses an optimization method for the spreading performed by centrifugal spreaders in order to minimize adverse environmental effects owing to application errors. A cost functional relying on a conventional simplified spread pattern model is proposed. In order to take into account the mechanical limits of the device, constraints are introduced. An augmented Lagrangian algorithm is implemented to compute an approximate solution. Numerical experiments show that application errors can be significantly reduced for parallel tracks within a main field body
Modélisation, optimisation et contrôle d'un processus d'épandage pour les applications agricoles
Due to inadequate strategy, application of mineral fertilizers by centrifugal process creates defects in fertilization. To determine the sequences set to apply to the input of distributors that can limit the distribution of errors, we propose several methods based on constrained optimization. First, we model the spatial distribution of fertilizer in plots and formalize an optimization problem with constraints in the field. To solve it, we develop a sliding window approach and are implementing an algorithm associated with the augmented Lagrangian method LBFGS. By applying two different techniques based on these principles, we can reduce defects and have the edge over 80% of the area properly fertilized. Another strategy using the resolution of an optimal control problem is also developed and provides encouraging initial resultsDu fait d'une stratégie inadaptée, l'épandage d'engrais minéraux par procédé centrifuge engendre des défauts de fertilisation.

On the use of optimization methods for the minimization of fertilizer application error with centrifugal spreaders
International audienceFertilizer application is one of the most important operations in agricultural production. Thanks to their low cost and robustness, centrifugal spreaders are widely used to carry out this task. However, when distances between successive paths followed by the tractor in the field are not constant, application errors occur. These ones generally cause waters pollution and economic issues. In this paper, to limit harmful environmental effects and disastrous drop in production due to centrifugal spreading, we propose an approach based on optimization techniques to improve the fertilization quality. An optimization criterion relying on a spatial distribution model, obtained in previous works, is considered. To compute optimal parameters which should be used as reference variables for the control of the spreader in the future, mechanical constraints are introduced. Faced with a large scale problem, we use an augmented lagrangian algorithm combined with a l-bfgs technique. Simulations results show low application error values comparing to fertilization inaccuracies found without optimization

Optimization-Based Approach for a Better Centrifugal Spreading
International audienceThe use of centrifugal spreaders for application of granular fertilizers raises concern about application accuracy. These spreaders enable to distribute almost uniform deposits with regularly spaced parallel tramlines but lead over and under fertilizer application when distances separating the successive tractor trajectories are not constant or if paths are not parallel between them. The aim of this study is to propose an optimization-based method to compute optimal variables for uniform fertilizer application. Mechanical constraints are also introduced so that the calculated parameters can be afterwards used as reference variables for the control of the spreader. The resulting improvements are illustrated by numerical examples for a field with geometrical singularities
