    Domains in Infinite Jets: C-Spectral Sequence

    Domains in infinite jets present the simplest class of diffieties with boundary. In this note some basic elements of geometry of these domains are introduced and an analogue of the C-spectral sequence in this context is studied. This, in particular, allows cohomological interpretation and analysis of initial data, boundary conditions, etc, for general partial differential equations and of transversality conditions in calculus of variations.     Measurement of streaming potential coupling coefficient in sandstones saturated with natural and artificial brines at high selenity

    We report experimental measurements of the streaming potential coupling coefficient in sandstones saturated with NaCl-dominated artificial and natural brines up to 5.5 M (321.4 g L−1 of NaCl; electrical conductivity of 23 S m−1). We find that the magnitude of the coupling coefficient decreases with increasing brine salinity, as observed in previous experimental studies and predicted by models of the electrical double layer. However, the magnitude of the coupling coefficient remains greater than zero up to the saturated brine salinity. The magnitude of the zeta potential we interpret from our measurements also decreases with increasing brine salinity in the low-salinity domain (0.4 M). We hypothesize that the constant value of zeta potential observed at high salinity reflects the maximum packing of counterions in the diffuse part of the electrical double layer. Our hypothesis predicts that the zeta potential becomes independent of brine salinity when the diffuse layer thickness is similar to the diameter of the hydrated counterion. This prediction is confirmed by our experimental data and also by published measurements on alumina in KCl brine. At high salinity (>0.4 M), values of the streaming potential coupling coefficient and the corresponding zeta potential are the same within experimental error regardless of sample mineralogy and texture and the composition of the brine

    An open systems approach to calculating time dependent spectra

    A new method to calculate the spectrum using cascaded open systems and master equations is presented. The method uses two state analyzer atoms which are coupled to the system of interest, whose spectrum of radiation is read from the excitation of these analyzer atoms. The ordinary definitions of a spectrum uses two-time averages and Fourier-transforms. The present method uses only one-time averages.     On the continuous spectral component of the Floquet operator for a periodically kicked quantum system

    By a straightforward generalisation, we extend the work of Combescure from rank-1 to rank-N perturbations. The requirement for the Floquet operator to be pure point is established and compared to that in Combescure. The result matches that in McCaw. The method here is an alternative to that work. We show that if the condition for the Floquet operator to be pure point is relaxed, then in the case of the delta-kicked Harmonic oscillator, a singularly continuous component of the Floquet operator spectrum exists. We also provide an in depth discussion of the conjecture presented in Combescure of the case where the unperturbed Hamiltonian is more general. We link the physics conjecture directly to a number-theoretic conjecture of Vinogradov and show that a solution of Vinogradov's conjecture solves the physics conjecture. The result is extended to the rank-N case. The relationship between our work and the work of Bourget on the physics conjecture is discussed.Comment: 25 pages, published in Journal of Mathematical Physic

    Zeta potential of intact natural limestone: Impact of potential-determining ions Ca, Mg and SO4

    We report measurements of the zeta potential on intact limestone samples obtained using the streaming potential method (SPM), supplemented by the more ubiquitous electrophoretic mobility method (EPM). The effect of the potential-determining ions (PDI) Ca, Mg and SO4, and the total ionic strength controlled by NaCl concentration, is investigated over the range typical of natural brines. We find that the zeta potential varies identically and linearly with calcium and magnesium concentration expressed as pCa or pMg. The zeta potential also varies linearly with pSO4. The sensitivity of the zeta potential to PDI concentration, and the IEP expressed as pCa or pMg, both decrease with increasing NaCl concentration. We report considerably lower values of IEP than most previous studies, and the first observed IEP expressed as pMg. The sensitivity of the zeta potential to PDI concentration is lower when measured using the SPM compared to the EPM, owing to the differing location of the shear plane at which the zeta potential is defined. SPM measurements are more appropriate in natural porous samples because they reflect the mineral surfaces that predominantly interact with the adjacent fluids. We demonstrate that special cleaning procedures are required to return samples to a pristine zeta potential after exposure to PDIs. We apply our results to an engineering process: the use of modified injection brine composition to increase oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs. We find a correlation between an increasingly negative zeta potential and increased oil recovery

    Differences in the trophic ecology of micronekton driven by diel vertical migration.

    Many species of micronekton perform diel vertical migrations (DVMs), which ultimately contributes to carbon export to the deep sea. However, not all micronekton species perform DVM, and the nonmigrators, which are often understudied, have different energetic requirements that might be reflected in their trophic ecology. We analyze bulk tissue and whole animal stable nitrogen isotopic compositions (ή 15N values) of micronekton species collected seasonally between 0 and 1250 m depth to explore differences in the trophic ecology of vertically migrating and nonmigrating micronekton in the central North Pacific. Nonmigrating species exhibit depth-related increases in ή 15N values mirroring their main prey, zooplankton. Higher variance in ή 15N values of bathypelagic species points to the increasing reliance of deeper dwelling micronekton on microbially reworked, very small suspended particles. Migrators have higher ή 15N values than nonmigrators inhabiting the epipelagic zone, suggesting the consumption of material during the day at depth, not only at night when they migrate closer to the surface. Migrating species also appear to eat larger prey and exhibit a higher range of variation in ή 15N values seasonally than nonmigrators, likely because of their higher energy needs. The dependence on material at depth enriched in 15N relative to surface particles is higher in migratory fish that ascend only to the lower epipelagic zone. Our results confirm that stark differences in the food habits and dietary sources of micronekton species are driven by vertical migrations

    Model selection and prediction of outcomes in recent onset schizophrenia patients who undergo cognitive training.

    Predicting treatment outcomes in psychiatric populations remains a challenge, but is increasingly important in the pursuit of personalized medicine. Patients with schizophrenia have deficits in cognition, and targeted cognitive training (TCT) of auditory processing and working memory has been shown to improve some of these impairments; but little is known about the baseline patient characteristics predictive of cognitive improvement. Here we use a model selection and regression approach called least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) to examine predictors of cognitive improvement in response to TCT for patients with recent onset schizophrenia. Forty-three individuals with recent onset schizophrenia randomized to undergo TCT were assessed at baseline on measures of cognition, symptoms, functioning, illness duration, and demographic variables. We carried out 10-fold cross-validation of LASSO for model selection and regression. We followed up on these results using linear models for statistical inference. No individual variable was found to correlate with improvement in global cognition using a Pearson correlation approach, and a linear model including all variables was also found not to be significant. However, the LASSO model identified baseline global cognition, education, and gender in a model predictive of improvement on global cognition following TCT. These findings offer guidelines for personalized approaches to cognitive training for patients with schizophrenia
