    High resolution Doppler lidar

    Get PDF
A high resolution lidar system was implemented to measure winds in the lower atmosphere. The wind speed along the line of sight was determined by measuring the Doppler shift of the aerosol backscattered laser signal. The system in its present configuration is stable, and behaves as indicated by theoretical simulations. This system was built to demonstrate the capabilities of the detector system as a prototype for a spaceborne lidar. The detector system investigated consisted of a plane Fabry-Perot etalon, and a 12-ring anode detector. This system is generically similar to the Fabry-Perot interferometer developed for passive wind measurements on board the Dynamics Explorer satellite. That this detector system performs well in a lidar configuration was demonstrated

The conformations and hydrogen bonding in the thiophene and thiazole title compounds, [Fe(C₅H₅)(C₂₀H₁₄NO₃S)], (I), and [Fe(C₅H₅)(C₁₉H₁₇N₂O₃S)], (II), are discussed. The sequence (C₅H₄)-(C₆H₄)-(CONH)-(C₄H₂S)-(CO₂Me) of rings and moieties in (I) is close to being planar; all consecutive interplanar angles are less than 10°. An intramolecular N-H...O=Cester hydrogen bond [graph set S(6), N...O = 2.768 (2) Å and N-H...O = 134 (2)°] effects the molecular planarity, and aggregation occurs via hydrogen-bonded chains formed from intermolecular Car-H...O=Cester/amide interactions along [010], with C...O distances ranging from 3.401 (3) to 3.577 (2) Å. The thiazole system in (II) crystallizes with two molecules in the asymmetric unit; these differ in the conformation along their long molecular axes; for example, the interplanar angle between the phenylene (C₆H₄) and thiazole (C₃NS) rings is 8.1 (2)° in one molecule and 27.66 (14)° in the other. Intermolecular N-H...O=Cester hydrogen bonds [N...O = 2.972 (4) and 2.971 (3) Å], each augmented by a Cphenylene-H...O=Cester interaction [3.184 (5) and 3.395 (4) Å], form motifs with graph set R¹₂(7) and generate chains along [100]. The amide C=O groups do not participate in hydrogen bonding. Compound (II) is the first reported ferrocenyl-containing thiazole structure

Synthesis and characterisation of novel ferrocenyl thienyl and thiazolyl systems

Ferrocenyl derivatives are currently under investigation by our group and several series containing both amidothienyl and amidothiazolyl systems have been synthesised and characterised. The incorporation of thienyl/thiazolyl groups into a ferrocenyl- or ferrocenylphenyl system greatly enhances the number of potential donor atoms for coordination with metal fragments e.g. PtII, PdII with a view to platinum anti-cancer studies and/or interaction with guest molecules through suitable hydrogen bonding interactions. In nature, thiazole has been found to be vital in certain natural products: examples include the antibiotic bacitracin and the siderophore yersiniabactin. In therapeutic studies the antitumour compound epothilone A and myxothiazole (inhibitor) have been extensively studied

Charged Higgs bosons from the 3-3-1 models and the R(D())\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)}) anomalies

Several anomalies in the semileptonic B-meson decays such as R(D())\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)}) have been reported by BABARBABAR, Belle, and LHCb collaborations recently. In this paper, we investigate the contributions of the charged Higgs bosons from the 3-3-1 models to the R(D())\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)}) anomalies. We find that, in a wide range of parameter space, the 3-3-1 models might give reasonable explanations to the R(D())\mathcal{R}(D^{(*)}) anomalies and other analogous anomalies of the B meson's semileptonic decays.Comment: Accpeted by Physical Review

How best to diagnose asthma in infants and toddlers?

    Get PDF
No reliable way exists to diagnose asthma in infants and toddlers. Recurrent wheezing, especially apart from colds, combined with physician diagnosed eczema or atopic dermatitis, eosinophilia, and a parental history of asthma, increase the probability of a subsequent asthma diagnosis in the absence of other causes (strength of recommendation: B, 2 good-quality cohort studies)

Recent ion propulsion technology efforts at NASA's Lewis Research Center including development of kW-class xenon ion thrusters, high power xenon and krypton ion thrusters, and power processors are reviewed. Thruster physical characteristics, performance data, life projections, and power processor component technology are summarized. The ion propulsion technology program is structured to address a broad set of mission applications from satellite stationkeeping and repositioning to primary propulsion using solar or nuclear power systems

Loss of Pten causes tumor initiation following differentiation of murine pluripotent stem cells due to failed repression of Nanog.

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) hold significant promise in regenerative medicine due to their unlimited capacity for self-renewal and potential to differentiate into every cell type in the body. One major barrier to the use of PSCs is their potential risk for tumor initiation following differentiation and transplantation in vivo. In the current study we sought to evaluate the role of the tumor suppressor Pten in murine PSC neoplastic progression. Using eight functional assays that have previously been used to indicate PSC adaptation or transformation, Pten null embryonic stem cells (ESCs) failed to rate as significant in five of them. Instead, our data demonstrate that the loss of Pten causes the emergence of a small number of aggressive, teratoma-initiating embryonic carcinoma cells (ECCs) during differentiation in vitro, while the remaining 90-95% of differentiated cells are non-tumorigenic. Furthermore, our data show that the mechanism by which Pten null ECCs emerge in vitro and cause tumors in vivo is through increased survival and self-renewal, due to failed repression of the transcription factor Nanog

Near term flight applications of arc jet and ion thruster satellite station-keeping systems as well as development activities in Europe, Japan, and the United States are reviewed. At least two arc jet and three ion propulsion flights are scheduled during the 1992-1995 period. Ground demonstration technology programs are focusing on the development of kW-class hydrazine and ammonia arc jets and xenon ion thrusters. Recent work at NASA LeRC on electric thruster and system integration technologies relating to satellite station keeping and repositioning will also be summarized
