    Intelligent wristbands for the automatic detection of emotional states for the elderly

    Over the last few years, research on computational intelligence is being conducted to detect emotional states of people. This paper proposes the use of intelligent wristbands for the automatic detection of emotional states to develop an application which allows to monitor older people in order to improve their quality of life. The paper describes the hardware design and the cognitive module that allows the recognition of the emotional states.     Drawing insight from queer and media studies, this article analyses data from the UK study Adults’ Media Lives. The authors claim that this study reveals the significance of people’s intimate relationships to their media practices, highlighting in particular how people’s media practices mediate the ‘presence’ of others. The authors put forward the concept of mediated intimacy to capture both the cultural intimacy people have with media and the mediation of intimacy by media practices. Mediating intimacy has implications for normative conceptions of intimate life, including the significance of ‘time’ to the values of ‘home’ and ‘work’

    Coils and power supplies design for the SMART tokamak

    Agredano-Torres, M., et al.A new spherical tokamak, the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART), is currently being designed at the University of Seville. The goal of the machine is to achieve a toroidal field of 1 T, a plasma current of 500 kA and a pulse length of 500 ms for a plasma with a major radius of 0.4 m and minor radius of 0.25 m. This contribution presents the design of the coils and power supplies of the machine. The design foresees a central solenoid, 12 toroidal field coils and 8 poloidal field coils. Taking the current waveforms for these set of coils as starting point, each of them has been designed to withstand the Joule heating during the tokamak operation time. An analytical thermal model is employed to obtain the cross sections of each coil and, finally, their dimensions and parameters. The design of flexible and modular power supplies, based on IGBTs and supercapacitors, is presented. The topologies and control strategy of the power supplies are explained, together with a model in MATLAB Simulink to simulate the power supplies performance, proving their feasibility before the construction of the system.This work received funding from the Fondo Europeo de Desarollo Regional (FEDER) by the European Commission under grant agreement numbers IE17-5670 and US-15570.     Full annual monitoring of Subantarctic Emiliania huxleyi populations reveals highly calcified morphotypes in high-CO2 winter conditions

    Datos de investigación en: http://hdl.handle.net/10366/143074[EN]Ocean acidifcation is expected to have detrimental consequences for the most abundant calcifying phytoplankton species Emiliania huxleyi. However, this assumption is mainly based on laboratory manipulations that are unable to reproduce the complexity of natural ecosystems. Here, E. huxleyi coccolith assemblages collected over a year by an autonomous water sampler and sediment traps in the Subantarctic Zone were analysed. The combination of taxonomic and morphometric analyses together with in situ measurements of surface-water properties allowed us to monitor, with unprecedented detail, the seasonal cycle of E. huxleyi at two Subantarctic stations. E. huxleyi subantarctic assemblages were composed of a mixture of, at least, four diferent morphotypes. Heavier morphotypes exhibited their maximum relative abundances during winter, coinciding with peak annual TCO2 and nutrient concentrations, while lighter morphotypes dominated during summer, coinciding with lowest TCO2 and nutrients levels. The similar seasonality observed in both time-series suggests that it may be a circumpolar feature of the Subantarctic zone. Our results challenge the view that ocean acidifcation will necessarily lead to a replacement of heavily-calcifed coccolithophores by lightly-calcifed ones in subpolar ecosystems, and emphasize the need to consider the cumulative efect of multiple stressors on the probable succession of morphotypes.European Union's Horizon 2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual fellowshi

    Thermal properties on nanofluids based on a high temperature-heat transfer fluid and metallic nanoparticles for concentrating solar energy

    In this work, nanofluids were prepared using commercial Cu nanoparticles and a commercial Heat Transfer Fluid (eutectic mixture of diphenyl oxide and biphenyl) as the base fluid. This fluid is used in Concentrating Solar Power plants. Different properties such as density, viscosity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity were characterized. Nanofluids showed enhanced heat transfer efficiency. In detail, the incorporation of Cu nanoparticles led to an increase of the heat capacity up to 14%. Also, thermal conductivity was increased up to 13%.     Theoretical characterisation of nanofluids based on metallic nanoparticles and organic oils

    Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation was used to model a nanofluid system composed of Cu nanoparticles and organic oils as base fluid (eutectic mixture of diphenyl oxide and biphenyl). The base fluid selected was an experimental fluid used as High Temperature-Heat Transfer Fluid in Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants. Thermodynamic properties as heat capacity and thermal conductivity were calculated and the results were compared with experimental data available. The comparison of some properties obtained from our simulated nanofluid system with experimental data let us to validate the model. The analysis of the Radial Function Distributions (RDFs) and the inspection of the Spatial Distribution Functions (SDFs) indicate the important role that plays the metal-oxygen interaction in the system.     Is food addiction a predictor of treatment outcome among patients with eating disorder?

    ObjectivesThe study aimed to examine whether food addiction (FA) was associated with greater severity in both binge eating disorders (BED) and bulimia nervosa and, therefore, to determine if FA was predictive of treatment outcome.MethodSeventy-one adult patients with bulimia nervosa and BED (42 and 29, respectively) participated in the study. FA was assessed by means of the Yale Food Addiction Scale.ResultsThe results confirmed a high prevalence of FA in patients with binge disorders (around 87%) and also its association with a greater severity of the disorder (i.e., related to an increased eating psychopathology and greater frequency of binge eating episodes). Although FA did not appear as a predictor of treatment outcome in general terms, when the diagnostic subtypes were considered separately, FA was associated with poor prognosis in the BED group.
