    A study of the application of satellite images to the identification of vegetation in a small area corresponding to the arid zone of Veracruz and part of Puebla is presented. This study is accomplished by means of images from the LANDSAT satellite obtained on January 19 and May 23, 1973.     The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors of the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are equipped with Hybrid Photo-Detectors. These vacuum photo-detectors are affected by the stray magnetic field of the LHCb magnet, which degrades their imaging properties. This effect increases the error on the Cherenkov angle measurement and would reduce the particle identification capabilities of LHCb. A system has been developed for the RICH2 Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector to perform a detailed characterisation of the magnetic distortion effects. It is described, along with the methods implemented to correct for these effects, restoring the optimal resolution.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure

    The Low Frequency Instrument on board the ESA Planck satellite is coupled to the Planck 1.5 meter off-axis dual reflector telescope by an array of 27 corrugated feed horns operating at 30, 44, 70, and 100 GHz. We briefly present here a detailed study of the optical interface devoted to optimize the angular resolution (10 arcmin at 100 GHz as a goal) and at the same time to minimize all the systematics coming from the sidelobes of the radiation pattern. Through optical simulations, we provide shapes, locations on the sky, angular resolutions, and polarization properties of each beam.Comment: On behalf of the Planck collaboration. 3 pages, 1 figure.     The Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the "Planck Surveyor" ESA mission will perform high-resolution imaging of the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies at four frequencies in the 30-100 GHz range. We review the LFI main scientific objectives, the current status of the instrument design and the on-going effort to develop software simulations of the LFI observations.     Shortly after grafting of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells, the serum of tumour-bearing mice loses the capacity to mediate immunoadherence phenomena, because of a sharp decrease in the concentration of C3b and C3d, while the cellular receptors for such factors are unaffected by tumour growth. It is suggested that complement is consumed through the alternative pathway which is activated during the inflammatory responses accompanying tumour growth

    Modeling the emergence of phenotypic heterogeneity in vascularized tumors

    We present a mathematical study of the emergence of phenotypic heterogeneity in vascularized tumors. Our study is based on formal asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations of a system of nonlocal parabolic equations that describes the phenotypic evolution of tumor cells and their nonlinear dynamic interactions with the oxygen, which is released from the intratumoral vascular network. Numerical simulations are carried out both in the case of arbitrary distributions of intratumor blood vessels and in the case where the intratumoral vascular network is reconstructed from clinical images obtained using dynamic optical coherence tomography. The results obtained support a more in-depth theoretical understanding of the eco-evolutionary process which underpins the emergence of phenotypic heterogeneity in vascularized tumors. In particular, our results offer a theoretical basis for empirical evidence indicating that the phenotypic properties of cancer cells in vascularized tumors vary with the distance from the blood vessels, and establish a relation between the degree of tumor tissue vascularization and the level of intratumor phenotypic heterogeneity

    A salvage surgical solution for recurrent lymphangioma of the prepuce

    Treatment of lymphangioma, circumscriptum of the prepuce is often technically demanding. Many different medical and surgical approaches have been described over the years, none of which has proved completely successful. We describe a case in which skin deficiency was a problem after prior multiple excisions of lymphangiomatous tissue. We decided to bury the degloved shaft in the scrotum. After 6 months the penis was raised and reconstructed using scrotal skin; this achieved satisfactory skin coverage. In such cases piliferous follicles can easily be dealt with at a later stage by cosmetic treatment.We believe this technical, approach may be a valid alternative to conventional procedures (i.e. grafts and flaps) especially when extensive resection makes skin coverage particularly difficult.
