PROFILE OF STROKE RATE VARIATIONS DURING 100M SWiMMING EVENTS

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION-Swimming velocity is the product of the stroke rate (SR) times the stroke length (SL), which can be' described as the distance travelled by the swimmer during a single stroke cycle The urgency of performance analysis, the easy assessment of this variables, and their intrinsic importance, imposed a proliferation of research in this domain. Among available studies, some of them pointed out the difficulty to establish a profile to the SR variation along a specific swimming event (Craig et al., 1985: Keskinen and Komi, 1993). Nevertheless, those studies were based on a single competition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variations of the stroke rate, in the 100 m events, during a complete competitive season. METHODS-Five female elite swimmers (aged 16.6±2.9yrs, 60.2:t6.6Kg weigh and 173.0:t6.9cm high) were studied' during a complete short course season All 100 meters events were studied (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). The video tape records of the events were observed and the mean SR for each lap was determined using Seiko S1 01 A watch with a frequency measuring function each 3 arm strokes. RESULTS-Main results of the are present d in Table 1. Despite none statistical significant difference were found between laps, SR values consistently decreased during the race for all events in the different styles. despite a slight increase in the final lap of the breaststroke event. This evidence is in accordance with Ungerechts and Thiesmann (1995) results. As SR values could be taken as an indicator of physiological background (Ungerechts and Thiesmann, 1995), the degree of the decrease of SR values during the race, can be used to analyse the preparation status of swimmers. CONC USION-SR values consistently decrease during 100 m events for all the competitive swimming techniques REFERENCES Craig, A.B.; Skehan, P,L; Pawelczyk, JA: Boomer, W.L (1985). A Systems Approach to Test the Usefulness of a Model to Challenge Organisational Change

The impact of a proposition concerning the split of the structure of a precision engineering company into two clusters was holistically analysed and verified for consistency, as regards the structure design parameters. A conceptual model supported by both the schools of strategists and structuralists was used as an audit tool for ordered questioning, debate, learning and dialectical discussion. Moreover, the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), provided orientation to theoretical validation of the model whose outcomes identified the potential, desirable and feasible change of both manufacturing systems and production planning and control (PPC). A situational, hermeneutics, interpretivist, learning oriented process of enquiry, rather different from best practice views, was shown adequate to the problem nature and to the case study confirming the interest of the two clusters. Thus, formal planning and control procedures exhibited a very weak stand requiring both development in line with the contingency factors and complementarity with the other work co-ordination mechanisms. This holistic, systemic, strategic and structured approach produced the reviewing and reformatting of the manufacturing strategy decision areas and recommended that PPC procedures should be further analysed in detail, in order to fit the two clusters. To sum up, the audit tool was found useful and it was also able to identify potential change in a credible way, to classify it as desirable/undesirable by following a learning process and, to discuss its feasibility in the context of a specific organisational culture. Thus, SSM provided an original contribution to Operations Research through the design of complex organisations under a systems view

Online business-to-business communication and online relationship: The mediator role of trust

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of online personalised content and interactive content communication on online relationship through trust as an affective mediator in a Business-to-Business (B2B) context. A quantitative research approach was conducted using structural equation modelling and a sample of B2B reseller market of information technology in Portugal. Results indicate that online communication influences positively online relationship through trust. Interactive content has a strong influence on trust, whereas the personalised content revealed a weak relationship with trust and, indirectly, with online relationship. Trust has an important role in the relationship as it is a full mediator. In addition, the interactive content is more influential than the personalised content in building and maintaining online relationships in the B2B reseller market.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

Testing the performance of rival warehousing policies through discrete event simulation

This research tested the performance of alternative warehouse designs concerning the picking process. The chosen performance measures were Travel Distance and Total Fulfilment Time. An explanatory case study was built up around a model implemented with SIMUL8. Hypotheses were set by selecting outcomes from the literature survey matching popular empirical findings. 17.4% reductions were found for Total Fulfilment Time and Resource Utilisation. The latter was then used as a proxy for operational efficiency. Literal replication of theoretical data-patterns was considered as an internal validity sign. Assessing the estimated changes benefits ahead of implementation was found to be a contribution to practice.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
