O VI and Multicomponent H I Absorption Associated with a Galaxy Group in the Direction of PG0953+415: Physical Conditions and Baryonic Content
We report the discovery of an O VI absorption system at z(abs) = 0.14232 in a
high resolution FUV spectrum of PG0953+415 obtained with the Space Telescope
Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). Both lines of the O VI 1032, 1038 doublet and
multicomponent H I Lya absorption are detected, but the N V doublet and the
strong lines of C II and Si III are not apparent. We examine the ionization
mechanism of the O VI absorber and find that while theoretical considerations
favor collisional ionization, it is difficult to observationally rule out
photoionization. If the absorber is collisionally ionized, it may not be in
equilibrium due to the rapid cooling of gas in the appropriate temperature
range. Non-equilibrium collisionally ionized models are shown to be consistent
with the observations. A WIYN survey of galaxy redshifts near the sight line
has revealed a galaxy at a projected distance of 395 kpc separated by ~130 km/s
from this absorber, and three additional galaxies are found within 130 km/s of
this redshift with projected separations ranging from 1.0 Mpc to 3.0 Mpc.
Combining the STIS observations of PG0953+415 with previous high S/N GHRS
observations of H1821+643, we derive a large number of O VI absorbers per unit
redshift, dN/dz ~20. We use this sample to obtain a first estimate of the
cosmological mass density of the O VI systems at z ~ 0. If further observations
confirm the large dN/dz derived for the O VI systems, then these absorbers

The AGN Outflow in the HDFS Target QSO J2233-606 from a High-Resolution VLT/UVES Spectrum
We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic UV absorption in the central
HDFS target QSO J2233-606, based on a high-resolution, high S/N (~25 -- 50)
spectrum obtained with VLT/UVES. This spectrum samples the cluster of intrinsic
absorption systems outflowing from the AGN at radial velocities v ~ -5000 --
-3800 km/s in the key far-UV diagnostic lines - the lithium-like CNO doublets
and H I Lyman series. We fit the absorption troughs using a global model of all
detected lines to solve for the independent velocity-dependent covering factors
of the continuum and emission-line sources and ionic column densities. This
reveals increasing covering factors in components with greater outflow
velocity. Narrow substructure is revealed in the optical depth profiles,
suggesting the relatively broad absorption is comprised of a series of multiple
components. We perform velocity-dependent photoionization modeling, which
allows a full solution to the C, N, and O abundances, as well as the velocity
resolved ionization parameter and total column density. The absorbers are found
to have supersolar abundances, with [C/H] and [O/H] ~0.5 -- 0.9, and [N/H] ~
1.1 -- 1.3, consistent with enhanced nitrogen production expected from
secondary nucleosynthesis processes. Independent fits to each kinematic
component give consistent results for the abundances. The lowest-ionization
material in each of the strong absorbers is modeled with similar ionization
parameters. Components of higher-ionization (indicated by stronger O VI
relative to C IV and N V) are present at velocities just redward of each
low-ionization absorber. We explore the implications of these results for the

The birth place of gamma-ray bursts: abundance gradients and constraints on progenitors
The physics of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their offsets from the centers of
their host galaxies are used to investigate the evolutionary state of their
progenitors, motivated by the popular idea that GRBs are linked with the
cataclysmic collapse of massive stars. We suggest that GRB progenitors in the
inner and outer regions of hosts may be intrinsically different: outer bursts
appear to have systematically greater isotropic equivalent energies (or
narrower jets). This may provide an interesting clue to the nature of GRBs, and
could reflect a relation between metallicity and the evolution of GRB
progenitors. If true, then this offset-isotropic luminosity correlation is a

Organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in surface sediments of the RĂa de Vigo (Atlantic margin of NW Iberia) in relation to environmental gradients
Organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages were analysed in 31 surface sediment samples from the RĂa de Vigo (NW Iberia) to obtain supporting evidence for the interpretation of past environmental signals from sediment cores. Complementarily, the totals of pollen (and pollen from riparian taxa), foraminiferal linings and freshwater algae were also considered to test their value as (palaeo)environmental indicators in fluvio-marine sedimentary environments. Abundances of foraminiferal linings gradually increased towards the rĂa's mouth, which supports its use as a proxy to infer the degree of marine influence in the sediment record. The ratio of dinoflagellate cysts to pollen and spores (D/P) increased with distance to the main river's mouth (and water depth) in the inner ( 20 m) parts of the rĂa. Total pollen concentrations decreased with water depth in the outer part but did not show any clear trend in the rest of the rĂa. No clear pattern in the distributions of pollen from riparian plants and spores from freshwater microalgae was detected. Multivariate analyses (clustering and RDA) performed on dinoflagellate cyst records and environmental data reflected a marked inshore-offshore distribution pattern mainly controlled by a fluvio-marine environmental gradient. Increasing abundances of cysts of Gymnodinium species and heterotrophic cysts as well as higher cyst diversity characterised the deeper environments of the outer rĂa. These observations suggest a relationship with increased shelf influence and are compatible with the heterotroph upwelling signal described in previous works. A very different cyst association with a predominance of autotrophic cysts characterised the intermediate and inner parts of rĂa, where exceptionally high cyst abundances of Lingulodinium polyedra (⌠56â99% and ⌠200â114,000 cysts.gâ1) were reported. Abundances of cysts of L. polyedra positively correlated with shallower and higher river-influenced environments characterised by higher sea-surface temperature. Our results agree with previous studies and reinforce the value of this species as an indicator of warmer and stratified conditions. Moreover, cysts of L. polyedra positively correlated with winter sea-surface nitrate contents, which is compatible with the nutrient enrichment signal (natural or anthropogenic) that has already been described in other deep and stratified estuarine environments and is consistent with historical cyst records obtained in the RĂa de Vigo. Computability of simple games: A characterization and application to the core
The class of algorithmically computable simple games (i) includes the class
of games that have finite carriers and (ii) is included in the class of games
that have finite winning coalitions. This paper characterizes computable games,
strengthens the earlier result that computable games violate anonymity, and
gives examples showing that the above inclusions are strict. It also extends
Nakamura's theorem about the nonemptyness of the core and shows that computable
games have a finite Nakamura number, implying that the number of alternatives

Quantifying the Drivers of Star Formation on Galactic Scales. I. The Small Magellanic Cloud
We use the star formation history of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) to
place quantitative limits on the effect of tidal interactions and gas infall on
the star formation and chemical enrichment history of the SMC. The coincident
timing of two recent (< 4 Gyr) increases in the star formation rate and
SMC/Milky Way(MW) pericenter passages suggests that global star formation in
the SMC is driven at least in part by tidal forces due to the MW. The Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the other potential driver of star formation, but is
only near the SMC during the most recent burst. The poorly constrained LMC-SMC
orbit is our principal uncertainty. To explore the correspondence between
bursts and MW pericenter passages further, we model star formation in the SMC
using a combination of continuous and tidally-triggered star formation. The
behavior of the tidally-triggered mode is a strong inverse function of the
SMC-MW separation (preferred behavior ~ r^-5, resulting in a factor of ~100
difference in the rate of tidally-triggered star formation at pericenter and
apocenter). Despite the success of these closed-box evolutionary models in
reproducing the recent SMC star formation history and current chemical
abundance, they have some systematic shortcomings that are remedied by
postulating that a sizable infall event (~ 50% of the total gas mass) occured
about 4 Gyr ago. Regardless of whether this infall event is included, the
fraction of stars in the SMC that formed via a tidally triggered mode is > 10%

On the Effects of Dissipative Turbulence on the Narrow Emission-Line Ratios in Seyfert Galaxies
We present a photoionization model study of the effects of micro-turbulence
and dissipative heating on emission lines for number and column densities,
elemental abundances, and ionizations typical for the narrow emission line
regions (NLRs) of Seyfert galaxies. Earlier studies of NLR spectra generally
found good agreement between the observations and the model predictions for
most strong emission lines, such as [O III] 5007, [O II]
3727, [N II] 6583, [Ne III] 3869, and the H and He
recombination lines. Nevertheless, the strengths of lines from species with
ionization potentials greater than that of He(54.4 eV), e.g. N and
Ne, were often under-predicted. Among the explanations suggested for
these discrepancies were (selectively) enhanced elemental abundances and
contributions from shock heated gas. Interestingly, the NLR lines have widths
of several 100 km s, well in excess of the thermal broadening. If this
is due to micro-turbulence, and the turbulence dissipates within the
emission-line gas, the gas can be heated in excess of that due to
photoionization. We show that the combined effects of turbulence and
dissipative heating can strongly enhance N V 1240 (relative to He II
1640), while the heating alone can boost the strength of [Ne V]
3426. We suggest that this effect is present in the NLR, particularly
within 100 pc of the central engine. Finally, since micro-turbulence
would make clouds robust against instabilities generated during acceleration,
it is not likely to be a coincidence that the radially outflowing emission-line

The X-ray Properties of the Nearby Star-Forming Galaxy IC 342: The XMM-Newton View
We present the X-ray properties of IC342 using XMM-Newton. Thirty-five
sources are detected coincident with the disk of IC342 (more than tripling the
number known), of which ~31 are likely to be intrinsic to IC342. This
population shows a range of spectral properties and has an X-ray luminosity
function slope and infrared luminosity comparable to that of starburst galaxies
such as M82 and the Antennae, while its relative lack of extended X-ray
emission is similar to the properties of quiescent spirals. We do detect
long-term variability between this observation and the 1991 ROSAT and 1993/2000
ASCA observations for five sources. Notably, the second most luminous source
IC342 X-2 is is found to be in its the lowest luminosity state observed for X-2
to date, although the slope of the spectrum is intermediate between the
previously observed low/hard and high/soft states. IC342 X-1, on the other
hand, is found to be in an identical state to that observed in 2000 with ASCA.
Assuming X-1 is in an anomalous very high (VH) state, then either (1) X-1 has
remained in this state between 2000 and 2002, and is therefore the longest
duration VH-state binary ever observed, or (2) it was simply caught in a VH
state by chance in both the 2000 ASCA and 2002 XMM-Newton observations. We have
also confirmed the ROSAT HRI result that the nucleus of IC342 is made up of
both point-like and extended emission. The relative fluxes of the two spectral
components suggest that the nucleus is complex, with a soft extended component

Metal Abundances of KISS Galaxies III. Nebular Abundances for Fourteen Galaxies and the Luminosity-Metallicity Relationship for HII Galaxies
We report results from the third in a series of nebular abundance studies of
emission-line galaxies from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS).
Galaxies with coarse metallicity estimates of 12 + log(O/H) less than 8.2 dex
were selected for observation. Spectra of 14 galaxies, which cover the full
optical region from [OII]3727,3729 to beyond [SII]6717,6731, are presented, and
abundance ratios of N, O, Ne, S, and Ar are computed. The auroral [OIII]4363
line is detected in all 14 galaxies. Oxygen abundances determined through the
direct electron temperature T_e method confirm that the sample is metal-poor
with 7.61 <= 12 + log(O/H) <= 8.32. By using these abundances in conjunction
with other T_e-based measurements from the literature, we demonstrate that HII
galaxies and more quiescent dwarf irregular galaxies follow similar
metallicity-luminosity (L-Z) relationships. The primary difference is a
zero-point shift between the correlations such that HII galaxies are brighter
by an average of 0.8 B magnitudes at a given metallicity. This offset can be
used as evidence to argue that low-luminosity HII galaxies typically undergo
factor of two luminosity enhancements, and starbursts that elevate the
luminosities of their host galaxies by 2 to 3 magnitudes are not as common. We
also demonstrate that the inclusion of interacting galaxies can increase the
scatter in the L-Z relation and may force the observed correlation towards
lower metallicities and/or larger luminosities. This must be taken into account
when attempting to infer metal abundance evolution by comparing local L-Z
relations with ones based on higher redshift samples since the fraction of

Galaxy Mergers and the Mass-Metallicity Relation: Evidence for Nuclear Metal Dilution and Flattened Gradients from Numerical Simulations
Recent results comparing interacting galaxies to the mass-metallicity
relation show that their nuclear oxygen abundances are unexpectedly low. We
present analysis of N-body/SPH numerical simulations of equal-mass mergers that
confirm the hypothesis that these underabundances are accounted for by radial
inflow of low-metallicity gas from the outskirts of the two merging galaxies.
The underabundances arise between first and second pericenter, and the
simulated abundance dilution is in good agreement with observations. The
simulations further predict that the radial metallicity gradients of the disk
galaxies flatten shortly after first passage, due to radial mixing of gas.
These predictions will be tested by future observations of the radial
