    Comparing Computing Platforms for Deep Learning on a Humanoid Robot

    The goal of this study is to test two different computing platforms with respect to their suitability for running deep networks as part of a humanoid robot software system. One of the platforms is the CPU-centered Intel NUC7i7BNH and the other is a NVIDIA Jetson TX2 system that puts more emphasis on GPU processing. The experiments addressed a number of benchmarking tasks including pedestrian detection using deep neural networks. Some of the results were unexpected but demonstrate that platforms exhibit both advantages and disadvantages when taking computational performance and electrical power requirements of such a system into account.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Normal human epidermis contains glycogen synthetase in activities which are approximately 10% of that found in brain and muscle. The enzyme is activated by glucose-6-phosphate (Glc-6-P) and seems to have characteristics which are similar to those reported for the same enzyme in other tissues. About 50% of the enzyme is normally in the I form which presumably correlates with the very low levels of glycogen (0.35 µg/mg) normally present in human epidermis

    Use of personal call alarms among community-dwelling older people.

    Having a fall and then lying on the floor for an hour or more is known as a ‘long lie’, which are associated with serious injury and an elevated risk of admission to hospital, long-term care, and death. Personal call alarms are designed to prevent long lies, although little is known about their use. Using cross-sectional data from the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing, this study investigated the proportion of self-reported users of personal call alarms among 3091 community-dwelling adults aged 65+ who reported difficulties of mobility or activities of daily living. The characteristics of users were then explored through logistic regressions comparing those living alone with those living with others. One hundred and eighty people self-reported using a personal call alarm (6%). Multivariate regression found the following to significantly predict personal call alarm use among both those living alone and with others: greater difficulty with activities / instrumental activities of daily living, older age, and for those living with others only: lower score on the quality of life subscale for control. Personal call alarm use may be markedly lower than the 30 per cent annual incidence of falls among community-dwelling older people. Better understanding is needed of the reasons for low usage, even amongst those at highest falls risk for whom such alarms are most likely to be beneficial

    Role of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) in synaptic plasticity and neurotransmission in mammalian spinal cord.

    Chronic unilateral hemisection (HX) of the adult rat spinal cord diminishes conduction through intact fibers in the ventrolateral funiculus (VLF) contralateral to HX. Intraspinal injections of Chondroitinase-ABC, known to digest chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) in the vicinity of injury, prevented this decline of axonal conduction. This was associated with improved locomotor function. We further injected three purified CSPGs into the lateral column of the uninjured cord at T10: NG2 and neurocan, which increase in the vicinity of a spinal injury, and aggrecan, which decreases. Intraspinal injection of NG2 acutely depressed axonal conduction through the injection region in a dose dependent manner. Similar injections of saline, aggrecan, or neurocan had no significant effect. These results identify a novel acute action of CSPGs on axonal conduction in spinal cord, and suggest that antagonism of proteoglycans reverses or prevents the decline of axonal conduction, in addition to stimulating axonal growth

    Cyclic Amp Accumulation in Psoriatic Skin: Differential Responses to Histamine, Amp, and Epinephrine by the Uninvolved and Involved Epidermis

    Using the uninvolved and involved skin from psoriatic patients, we investigated the effects of histamine and AMP (or adenosine) in vitro on the intracellular cyclic AMP levels. Both agents activated adenylate cyclase of the uninvolved and involved resulting in the accumulation of cyclic AMP. Without a cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor, these responses were biphasic and the maximal accumulation was observed in 5min. With the PDE inhibitor both responses were markedly potentiated and high levels of cyclic AMP were observed for more than 20mm. The response to histamine by the involved skin was much greater than that by the uninvolved. The degree of the response to adenosine was approximately equal. In accordance with our previous work, the response to epinephrine by the involved skin was much less than that by the uninvolved. Thus adenylate cyclases of involved skin from psoriatic patients exhibit a markedly diminished response to epinephrine while at the same time exhibiting a markedly enhanced response to histamine. This precludes the possibility that the unresponsiveness to epinephrine can be due to a generalized inability of the epidermal psoriatic plaque cell to make a functioning cell membrane

    Comparison of Inter and Intra-Operator Differences for Cephalometric Landmark Identification on Three-Dimensional CBCT Images using Pro Plan CMF

    Objective: To establish reliability of cephalometric landmark identification in threedimensions using ProPlan CMF software. Methods: Two orthodontist identified a series of 33 cephalometric landmarks on 20 CBCT scans of Class I, pre-orthodontic patients and repeated the landmark identification about two months later. Intraclass correlations (ICC) were calculated by landmark in the X, Y, and Z dimensions and F-test were used to assess difference in landmark location in the X, Y, and Z dimensions. Results: The majority of landmarks had good to excellent ICC for both inter- and intraobserver reliability. F-test also showed the majority of landmarks had no significant difference between the observers. Conclusion: Most landmarks showed good to very good reliability and reproducibility using ProPlan CMF, with some landmarks proving more reliable than others and further research is needed to establish the utility and practicality of three-dimensional cephalometrics as a common diagnostic tool in orthodontics

    Sequential phosphorylation of adjacent serine residues on the N-terminal region of cardiac troponin-I: structure-activity implications of ordered phosphorylation

    AbstractWe have used NMR spectroscopy to monitor the phosphorylation of a peptide corresponding to the N-terminal region of human cardiac troponin-I (residues 17–30), encompassing the two adjacent serine residues of the dual phosphorylation site. An ordered incorporation of phosphate catalysed by PKA was observed, with phosphorylation of Ser-24 preceding that of Ser-23. Diphosphorylation induced a conformational transition in this region, involving the specific association of the Arg-22 and Ser-24P side-chains, and maximally stabilised when both phosphoserines were in the di-anionic form. The results suggest that the second phosphorylation at Ser-23 of cardiac troponin-I is of particular significance in the mechanism by which adrenaline regulates the calcium sensitivity of the myofibrillar actomyosin Mg-ATPase
