    Magnetic nanowires as permanent magnet materials

    We present the fabrication of metallic magnetic nanowires using a low temperature chemical process. We show that pressed powders and magnetically oriented samples exhibit a very high coercivity (6.5 kOe at 140 K and 4.8 kOe at 300 K). We discuss the magnetic properties of these metamaterials and show that they have the suitable properties to realize "high temperature magnets" competitive with AlNiCo or SmCo permanent magnets. They could also be used as recording media for high density magnetic recording.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    M-SrFe12O19 and ferrihydrite-like ultrathin nanoplatelets as building blocks for permanent magnets: HAADF-STEM study and magnetic properties

    Mixtures of M-type strontium hexaferrite (M-SrFe12O19) and ferrihydrite-like particles were prepared by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal process at 200 °C with heating rates in the range 40–50 °C min-1. The particles exhibited a platelet shape with a diameter comprised between 20 and 200 nm and a thickness between 2 and 5 nm. HAADF-STEM observations and EDS analysis were carried out for a better understanding of nucleation and growth process. EDS showed that most of the particles contained Sr and HAADF-STEM revealed that very thin particles with a hexaferrite core extending over less than a unit cell and with surface disorder crystallized along with well crystallized hexaferrite and defect free ferrihydrite particles. The symmetric multilayer structures (SRS) of the ultrathin particles suggested that the nucleation step of the hexaferrite particles involved clusters containing Sr atoms. In comparison with the M-SrFe12O19 micrometer sized platelets prepared with heating rate of 25 °C min-1, the mixtures of ultrathin hexaferrite- and ferrihydrite-like particles combined after annealing a higher coercivity reaching 465 kA m-1 thanks to the smaller initial particle size and a high magnetization reaching 65 A m2 kg-1 thanks to a limited amount of hematite

    Al NPs are synthesized by laser ablation of a bulk Al target immersed into liquid ethanol saturated with hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. The nanoparticles possess a well-distinguished core-shell structure. High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy shows several layers inside the Al nanoparticle: oxide layer, amorphous Al, single crystal Al, and a cavity in the center. Formation of the cavity is attributed to the sharp increase of hydrogen dissolution in Al upon its melting and its eventual release after the solidification

    Reaching in reality and virtual reality: a comparison of movement kinematics in healthy subjects and in adults with hemiparesis

    BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) is an innovative tool for sensorimotor rehabilitation increasingly being employed in clinical and community settings. Despite the growing interest in VR, few studies have determined the validity of movements made in VR environments with respect to real physical environments. The goal of this study was to compare movements done in physical and virtual environments in adults with motor deficits to those in healthy individuals. METHODS: The participants were 8 healthy adults and 7 adults with mild left hemiparesis due to stroke. Kinematics of functional arm movements involving reaching, grasping and releasing made in physical and virtual environments were analyzed in two phases: 1) reaching and grasping the ball and 2) ball transport and release. The virtual environment included interaction with an object on a 2D computer screen and haptic force feedback from a virtual ball. Temporal and spatial parameters of reaching and grasping were determined for each phase. RESULTS: Individuals in both groups were able to reach, grasp, transport, place and release the virtual and real ball using similar movement strategies. In healthy subjects, reaching and grasping movements in both environments were similar but these subjects used less wrist extension and more elbow extension to place the ball on the virtual vertical surface. Participants with hemiparesis made slower movements in both environments compared to healthy subjects and during transport and placing of the ball, trajectories were more curved and interjoint coordination was altered. Despite these differences, patients with hemiparesis also tended to use less wrist extension during the whole movement and more elbow extension at the end of the placing phase. CONCLUSION: Differences in movements made by healthy subjects in the two environments may be explained by the use of a 2D instead of a 3D virtual environment and the absence of haptic feedback from the VR target. Despite these differences, our findings suggest that both healthy subjects and individuals with motor deficits used similar movement strategies when grasping and placing a ball in the two reality conditions. This suggests that training of arm movements in VR environments may be a valid approach to the rehabilitation of patients with motor disorders

    Impact behavior of injected PP/nanoclay parts

    This work attempts to contribute to bridge the gap between scientific challenges and industrial stakes regarding PP/nanoclay composites. Pieces of nanocomposites were obtained by direct injection of commercial PP mixed with a commercial MB of PP with 50% of organoclay, with a double-gated hot runner mould, which produced mouldings with a weld line. The moulding microstructure was assessed by POM and XRD, while the distribution and exfoliation grade of clay was evaluated by TEM and XRD. The typical skin-core structure was found, with a skin thickness wider in bulk than in weld line zones. Regarding clay platelets mostly intercalated structures were seen. The impact properties at room temperature were assessed by means of tensile and biaxial tests. Properties were monitored at different sites of the mouldings. At the weld line zone less energy was consumed under tensile conditions and exhibited higher apparent impact toughness under biaxial conditions than the bulk zone. Visual inspection of biaxially impacted samples showed that the orientation of polymer molecules and clay platelets induced by melt flow prevailed, and the weld line was not the determinant of the toughness of the mouldings. An optimum in impact performance was found for moulding with 3% of clay, since at larger clay contents platelets agglomerated and acted as stress raisers

    De-Confinement in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions at LHC energies

    Recently, the CMS Collaboration has published identified particle transverse momentum spectra in high multiplicity events at LHC energies s\sqrt s = 0.9-13 TeV. In the present work the transverse momentum spectra have been analyzed in the framework of the color fields inside the clusters of overlapping strings, which are produced in high energy hadronic collisions. The non-Abelian nature is reflected in the coherence sum of the color fields which as a consequence gives rise to an enhancement of the transverse momentum and a suppression of the multiplicities relative to the non overlapping strings. The initial temperature and shear viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s\eta/s are obtained. For the higher multiplicity events at s\sqrt s =7 and 13 TeV the initial temperature is above the universal hadronization temperature and is consistent with the creation of de-confined matter. In these small systems it can be argued that the thermalization is a consequence of the quantum tunneling through the event horizon introduced by the confining color fields, in analogy to the Hawking-Unruh effect. The small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s\eta/s near the critical temperature suggests that the matter is a strongly coupled Quark Gluon Plasma.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Role of personality in behavioral responses to new environments in captive panthera leo persica

    Studying personality in captive animals may enable the development of more individual-based management decisions in terms of husbandry, enrichment, and breeding, which may help to improve overall animal welfare. The Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) at London Zoo represent an opportunity to research an understudied species\u2019 response to new environments. In the last few years, these lions have experienced several social and physical changes, such as new enclosures and increased social interaction with humans. This project aimed to investigate the role of personality in behavioral responses to these new environments. Lion personality questionnaires completed by keepers and direct focal animal observations were used to create personality profiles. Time budgets and enclosure use were determined and compared between control nights and human social event nights, and between the lions\u2019 previous enclosure and their new one. The results showed a lack of a difference in time budget and enclosure use between control nights and social event nights, and overall the Spread of Participation Index values revealed the lions use their enclosures unevenly. Personality profiles identified various traits (e.g., curious and eccentric) that could assist with individual-based management decisions, such as enrichment strategies. As the first study to assess Asiatic lions personality, this research contributes to the creation of consistent and valid methodology for evaluating captive animal personality. Personality assessment may help to improve husbandry and welfare protocols for individual lions, leading to the improved health and success of the species
