Sensory quality of organic milk based on grazing and high ratio of legumes in the feeding ration
Organic milk forms an important segment of the fresh milk production in Denmark. However, studies are needed to substantiate the high quality and future development of new variations of organic milk for different consumers. Differences in the composition of organically and conventionally produced milk (free fatty acids and a higher content of antioxidants in organic milk) are suggested to be a result of differences in feeding regimes (maize components in conventional production vs. grass and legumes in organic production). Also, milk from dairy cows fed grass silage has a different flavour compared to milk from dairy cows fed maize silage. This study evaluated the sensory properties of organic milk from dairy cows from different feeding trials.
The effect of four different legumes and herbs, lucerne (Medicargo sativa), red clover (Trifolium pratense), white clover (Trifolium repens) and chicory (Cichorium intybus), was studied following a schedule including 4*12 Holstein Frisian cows. Descriptive sensory analysis was performed on the fresh pasteurized unhomogenized full-fat milk (6 replicates in 2 sessions) with a trained panel of 10 assessors.
The preliminary results from the descriptive analysis of summer feeding (grazing) and winter feeding (silage) show that feeding with legumes and grass affects the sensory quality of full-fat unhomogenized organic milk. The most distinct milk was obtained from feeding ration high in chicory. This milk was characterized by a bitter and metallic taste and an astringent aftertaste both from the summer grazing and winter silage feeding trials. Red clover was characterized by a boiled milk flavour (summer), lucerne by a fatty aftertaste (winter) and white clover by a sweet and creamy flavour (winter).
The results of the first season, which will also include relations between the sensory quality and the milk composition, serve as important inputs for the extensive studies to be conducted during the next three seasons. These studies include farm studies and consumer studies (product information, preference and purchase motives)
Optical/near-infrared selection of red QSOs: Evidence for steep extinction curves towards galactic centers?
We present the results of a search for red QSOs using a selection based on
optical imaging from SDSS and near-infrared imaging from UKIDSS. For a sample
of 58 candidates 46 (79%) are confirmed to be QSOs. The QSOs are predominantly
dust-reddened except a handul at redshifts z>3.5. The dust is most likely
located in the QSO host galaxies. 4 (7%) of the candidates turned out to be
late-type stars, and another 4 (7%) are compact galaxies. The remaining 4
objects we could not identify. In terms of their optical spectra the QSOs are
similar to the QSOs selected in the FIRST-2MASS red Quasar survey except they
are on average fainter, more distant and only two are detected in the FIRST
survey. We estimate the amount of extinction using the SDSS QSO template
reddened by SMC-like dust. It is possible to get a good match to the observed
(restframe ultraviolet) spectra, but for nearly all the reddened QSOs it is not
possible to match the near-IR photometry from UKIDSS. The likely reasons are
that the SDSS QSO template is too red at optical wavelengths due to
contaminating host galaxy light and that the assumed SMC extinction curve is
too shallow. Our survey has demonstrated that selection of QSOs based on
near-IR photometry is an efficent way to select QSOs, including reddened QSOs,
with only small contamination from late-type stars and compact galaxies. This
will be useful with ongoing and future wide-field near-IR surveys such as the

Serendipitous discovery of a projected pair of QSOs separated by 4.5 arcsec on the sky
We present the serendipitous discovery of a projected pair of quasi-stellar
objects (QSOs) with an angular separation of arcsec. The
redshifts of the two QSOs are widely different: one, our programme target, is a
QSO with a spectrum consistent with being a narrow line Seyfert 1 AGN at
. For this target we detect Lyman-, \ion{C}{4}, and
\ion{C}{3]}. The other QSO, which by chance was included on the spectroscopic
slit, is a Type 1 QSO at a redshift of , for which we detect
\ion{C}{4}, \ion{C}{3]} and \ion{Mg}{2}. We compare this system to previously
detected projected QSO pairs and find that only about a dozen previously known

Determining the fraction of reddened quasars in COSMOS with multiple selection techniques from X-ray to radio wavelengths
The sub-population of quasars reddened by intrinsic or intervening clouds of
dust are known to be underrepresented in optical quasar surveys. By defining a
complete parent sample of the brightest and spatially unresolved quasars in the
COSMOS field, we quantify to which extent this sub-population is fundamental to
our understanding of the true population of quasars. By using the available
multiwavelength data of various surveys in the COSMOS field, we built a parent
sample of 33 quasars brighter than mag, identified by reliable X-ray to
radio wavelength selection techniques. Spectroscopic follow-up with the
NOT/ALFOSC was carried out for four candidate quasars that had not been
targeted previously to obtain a 100\% redshift completeness of the sample. The
population of high quasars (HAQs), a specific sub-population of quasars
selected from optical/near-infrared photometry, is found to contribute
of the parent sample. The full population of bright spatially
unresolved quasars represented by our parent sample consists of
reddened quasars defined by having , and
of the sample having assuming the extinction
curve of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We show that the HAQ selection works well
for selecting reddened quasars, but some are missed because their optical
spectra are too blue to pass the color cut in the HAQ selection. This is
either due to a low degree of dust reddening or anomalous spectra. We find that
the fraction of quasars with contributing light from the host galaxy is most
dominant at . At higher redshifts the population of spatially
unresolved quasars selected by our parent sample is found to be representative
of the full population at mag. This work quantifies the bias against

The influence of persistent organic pollutants in the traditional Inuit diet on markers of inflammation
Concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are high in Inuit living predominately on the traditional marine diet. Adverse effects of POPs include disruption of the immune system and cardiovascular diseases that are frequent in Greenland Inuit. We aimed to assess the association between exposure to POPs from the marine diet and inflammation, taking into account other factors such as vitamin D. We invited Inuit and non-Inuit living in settlements or the town in rural East Greenland or in the capital city Nuuk. Participants completed a food frequency questionnaire and donated a blood sample for measurement of the two markers of inflammation YKL-40 and hsCRP, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D, eleven organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), fourteen polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), one polybrominated biphenyl, and nine polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) adjusted to the serum lipid content. Participants were 50 through 69 years old, living in settlements, town or city (n = 151/173/211; 95% participation rate). ΣOCP, ΣPCB and ΣPBDE serum levels were higher in Inuit than in non-Inuit (p<0.001/ p<0.001/ p<0.001), in older individuals (p<0.001/p<0.001/p = 0.002) and in participants with the highest intake of Greenlandic food items (p<0.001/p<0.001/p<0.001). Both YKL-40 and hsCRP serum levels were higher in Inuit compared to non-Inuit (p<0.001/p = 0.001), and increased with age (p<0.001/p = 0.001) and with the intake of Greenlandic food items (p<0.001/p = 0.002). Multivariate analysis conformed to a marked influence on both YKL-40 and hsCRP by ΣOCP (p<0.001/p<0.001) and ΣPCBs (p<0.001/p = 0.001) after adjusting for age, BMI, vitamin D, alcohol and smoking. POP levels were associated with the intake of the traditional Inuit diet and with markers of inflammation. This supports a pro-inflammatory role of POPs to promote chronic diseases common to populations in Greenland. These data inform guidelines on 'the Arctic dilemma' and encourage follow-up on the ageing Arctic populations
Limitations of light delay and storage times in EIT experiments with condensates
We investigate the limitations arising from atomic collisions on the storage
and delay times of probe pulses in EIT experiments. We find that the atomic
collisions can be described by an effective decay rate that limits storage and
delay times. We calculate the momentum and temperature dependence of the decay
rate and find that it is necessary to excite atoms at a particular momentum
depending on temperature and spacing of the energy levels involved in order to

The Size of the Narrow-Line Emitting Region in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 5548 from Emission-Line Variability
The narrow [O III] 4959, 5007 emission-line fluxes in the spectrum of the
well-studied Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 are shown to vary with time. From this
we show that the narrow line-emitting region has a radius of only 1-3 pc and is
denser (n ~ 10^5 cm^{-3}) than previously supposed. The [O III] line width is
consistent with virial motions at this radius given previous determinations of
the black hole mass.Since the [O III] emission-line flux is usually assumed to
be constant and is therefore used to calibrate spectroscopic monitoring data,
the variability has ramifications for the long-term secular variations of
continuum and emission-line fluxes, though it has no effect on shorter-term
reverberation studies. We present corrected optical continuum and broad Hbeta

A Revised Broad-Line Region Radius and Black Hole Mass for the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 NGC 4051
We present the first results from a high sampling rate, multi-month
reverberation mapping campaign undertaken primarily at MDM Observatory with
supporting observations from telescopes around the world. The primary goal of
this campaign was to obtain either new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag
measurements for several relatively low luminosity AGNs. We feature results for
NGC 4051 here because, until now, this object has been a significant outlier
from AGN scaling relationships, e.g., it was previously a ~2-3sigma outlier on
the relationship between the broad-line region (BLR) radius and the optical
continuum luminosity - the R_BLR-L relationship. Our new measurements of the
lag time between variations in the continuum and Hbeta emission line made from
spectroscopic monitoring of NGC 4051 lead to a measured BLR radius of R_BLR =
1.87 (+0.54 -0.50) light days and black hole mass of M_BH = 1.73 (+0.55 -0.52)
x 10^6 M_sun. This radius is consistent with that expected from the R_BLR-L
relationship, based on the present luminosity of NGC 4051 and the most current
calibration of the relation by Bentz et al. (2009a). We also present a
preliminary look at velocity-resolved Hbeta light curves and time delay
measurements, although we are unable to reconstruct an unambiguous

Nature and statistical properties of quasar associated absorption systems in the XQ-100 Legacy Survey
We statistically study the physical properties of a sample of narrow
absorption line (NAL) systems looking for empirical evidences to distinguish
between intrinsic and intervening NALs without taking into account any a priori
definition or velocity cut-off. We analyze the spectra of 100 quasars with 3.5
< z < 4.5, observed with X-shooter/VLT in the context of the XQ-100
Legacy Survey. We detect a 8 excess in the number density of
absorbers within 10,000 km/s of the quasar emission redshift with respect to
the random occurrence of NALs. This excess does not show a dependence on the
quasar bolometric luminosity and it is not due to the redshift evolution of
NALs. It extends far beyond the standard 5000 km/s cut-off traditionally
defined for associated absorption lines. We propose to modify this definition,
extending the threshold to 10,000 km/s when also weak absorbers (equivalent
width < 0.2 \AA) are considered. We infer NV is the ion that better traces the
effects of the quasar ionization field, offering the best statistical tool to
identify intrinsic systems. Following this criterion we estimate that the
fraction of quasars in our sample hosting an intrinsic NAL system is 33
percent. Lastly, we compare the properties of the material along the quasar
line of sight, derived from our sample, with results based on close quasar
pairs investigating the transverse direction. We find a deficiency of cool gas
(traced by CII) along the line of sight associated with the quasar host galaxy,
