    The Gibbs Paradox and the Distinguishability of Identical Particles

    Identical classical particles are distinguishable. This distinguishability affects the number of ways W a macrostate can be realized on the micro-level, and from the relation S = k ln W leads to a non-extensive expression for the entropy. This result is usually considered incorrect because of its inconsistency with thermodynamics. It is sometimes concluded from this inconsistency that identical particles are fundamentally indistinguishable after all; and even that quantum mechanics is indispensable for making sense of this. In contrast, we argue that the classical statistics of distinguishable particles and the resulting non-extensive entropy function are perfectly acceptable from both a theoretical and an experimental perspective. The inconsistency with thermodynamics can be removed by taking into account that the entropy concept in statistical mechanics is not completely identical to the thermodynamical one. We observe that even identical quantum particles are in some cases distinguishable, and conclude that quantum mechanics is irrelevant to the Gibbs paradox.Comment: 15 page

    Ongeveer 20 procent van de zorginstellingen en zwembaden heeft in 2005 te maken gehad met een legionellabesmetting in de leidingwaterinstallatie. Dit gold ook voor 5 procent van de hotels en campings. Vooral in zorginstellingen kan Legionella in de waterleidingen gevaarlijk zijn, omdat de mensen hier vaak een zwakkere gezondheid hebben. Circa 90% van de instellingen leeft niet alle wettelijk voorgeschreven preventiemaatregelen volledig na. Bij hercontrole is echter een groot deel van de problemen opgelost. Dit toont de effectiviteit en het belang van de controles: eenmaal op de hoogte van de risico’s zijn de eigenaren meestal bereid de nodige aanpassingen te doen. Het aantal collectieve leidingwaterinstallaties met Legionella nam tussen 2000 en 2006 niet duidelijk af. Een betere naleving van de legionellapreventie regelgeving en installatievoorschriften leidt naar verwachting wél tot minder Legionella in leidingwaterinstallaties. Tussen 2000 en 2006 steeg het aantal gemelde patiënten met legionellose. Een betrouwbare schatting van het aantal patiënten dat gerelateerd is aan een collectieve leidingwaterinstallatie als besmettingsbron is echter niet mogelijk

    Mapping onto Eq-5 D for patients in poor health

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>An increasing amount of studies report mapping algorithms which predict EQ-5 D utility values using disease specific non-preference-based measures. Yet many mapping algorithms have been found to systematically overpredict EQ-5 D utility values for patients in poor health. Currently there are no guidelines on how to deal with this problem. This paper is concerned with the question of why overestimation of EQ-5 D utility values occurs for patients in poor health, and explores possible solutions.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Three existing datasets are used to estimate mapping algorithms and assess existing mapping algorithms from the literature mapping the cancer-specific EORTC-QLQ C-30 and the arthritis-specific Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) onto the EQ-5 D. Separate mapping algorithms are estimated for poor health states. Poor health states are defined using a cut-off point for QLQ-C30 and HAQ, which is determined using association with EQ-5 D values.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All mapping algorithms suffer from overprediction of utility values for patients in poor health. The large decrement of reporting 'extreme problems' in the EQ-5 D tariff, few observations with the most severe level in any EQ-5 D dimension and many observations at the least severe level in any EQ-5 D dimension led to a bimodal distribution of EQ-5 D index values, which is related to the overprediction of utility values for patients in poor health. Separate algorithms are here proposed to predict utility values for patients in poor health, where these are selected using cut-off points for HAQ-DI (> 2.0) and QLQ C-30 (< 45 average of QLQ C-30 functioning scales). The QLQ-C30 separate algorithm performed better than existing mapping algorithms for predicting utility values for patients in poor health, but still did not accurately predict mean utility values. A HAQ separate algorithm could not be estimated due to data restrictions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Mapping algorithms overpredict utility values for patients in poor health but are used in cost-effectiveness analyses nonetheless. Guidelines can be developed on when the use of a mapping algorithms is inappropriate, for instance through the identification of cut-off points. Cut-off points on a disease specific questionnaire can be identified through association with the causes of overprediction. The cut-off points found in this study represent severely impaired health. Specifying a separate mapping algorithm to predict utility values for individuals in poor health greatly reduces overprediction, but does not fully solve the problem.</p

    Dinoflagellate cysts production, excystment and transport in the upwelling off Cape Blanc (NW Africa)

    To extend the understanding of dinoflagellate cysts production, excystment and vertical/lateral transport in the water column, we compared upper water cyst export production with cysts associations and concentrations in the subsurface nepheloid layer, bottom nepheloid layer and deeper water column during active upwelling off Cape Blanc (NW Africa) in August 2020. Export production was collected by two drifting trap surveys; DTS1 in an active upwelling cell for 4 days and DTS2 in an offshore drifting upwelling filament for 2 days. Subsurface, bottom nepheloid layers and deeper waters were sampled by in-situ pumps along two transects perpendicular to the shelf break. During DTS1, light limitation hampered phytoplankton production which might have influenced cyst production negatively due to up- and downward movement of water masses. Cyst export production increased at the rim of the upwelling cell. For DTS2, upwelling filament cyst export production was up to 3 times lower than that of DTS1. Echinidinium delicatum had highest relative and absolute abundances in the active upwelling, Echinidinium zonneveldiae and Bitectatodinium spongium in the upwelling filament, and Impagidinium spp. and cysts of Gymnodinium microreticulatum/nolleri at the most distal stations. Comparison of concentrations of cysts with and without cell contents showed that the majority of cysts hatched before reaching deeper waters and displayed a dormancy period of less than 6 days. About 5% of the living cysts reached deeper waters and/or the ocean floor. Living cysts were transported offshore in the upwelling filament. In case ships exchange ballast waters in the studied region, they will take up laterally transported living cysts. Upon release of the ballast waters in the port of arrival, these cysts have the potential to become “invader species” that can threaten economy and/or health. Lateral transport of cysts was observed in the bottom nepheloid layer and in deeper waters (800 - 1200m depth) with a maximal extension of about 130km off the shelf break. Therefore, sediments in the region will contain a mixture of regionally and locally produced dinoflagellate cysts. This insight contributes to the improvement of environmental reconstructions of the Cape blanc upwelling system based on downcore cyst associations

    Dutch Tariff for the Five-Level Version of EQ-5D

    Background: In 2009, a new version of the EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire (EQ-5D) was introduced with five rather than three answer levels per dimension. This instrument is known as the EQ-5D-5L. To make the EQ-5D-5L suitable for use in economic evaluations, societal values need to be attached to all 3125 health states. Objectives: To derive a Dutch tariff for the EQ-5D-5L. Methods: Health state values were elicited during face-to-face interviews in a general population sample stratified for age, sex, and education, using composite time trade-off (cTTO) and a discrete choice experiment (DCE). Data were modeled using ordinary least squares and tobit regression (for cTTO) and a multinomial conditional logit model (for DCE). Model performance was evaluated on the basis of internal consistency, parsimony, goodness of fit, handling of left-censored values, and theoretical considerations. Results: A representative sample (N = 1003) of the Dutch population participated in the valuation study. Data of 979 and 992 respondents were included in the analysis of the cTTO and the DCE, respectively. The cTTO data were left-censored at -1. The tobit model was considered the preferred model for the tariff on the basis of its handling of the censored nature of the data, which was confirmed through comparison with the DCE data. The predicted values for the EQ-5D-5L ranged from -0.446 to 1. Conclusions: This study established a Dutch tariff for the EQ-5D-5L on the basis of cTTO. The values represent the preferences of the Dutch population. The tariff can be used to estimate the impact of health care interventions on quality of life, for example, in context of economic evaluations.</p

    Observation of strongly entangled photon pairs from a nanowire quantum dot

    A bright photon source that combines high-fidelity entanglement, on-demand generation, high extraction efficiency, directional and coherent emission, as well as position control at the nanoscale is required for implementing ambitious schemes in quantum information processing, such as that of a quantum repeater. Still, all of these properties have not yet been achieved in a single device. Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in nanowire waveguides potentially satisfy all of these requirements; however, although theoretically predicted, entanglement has not yet been demonstrated for a nanowire quantum dot. Here, we demonstrate a bright and coherent source of strongly entangled photon pairs from a position controlled nanowire quantum dot with a fidelity as high as 0.859 +/- 0.006 and concurrence of 0.80 +/- 0.02. The two-photon quantum state is modified via the nanowire shape. Our new nanoscale entangled photon source can be integrated at desired positions in a quantum photonic circuit, single electron devices and light emitting diodes.Comment: Article and Supplementary Information with open access published at: http://www.nature.com/ncomms/2014/141031/ncomms6298/full/ncomms6298.htm
