Anticipating and assessing the needs for qualified teachers to teach in large city schools is of major concern to public school administrators across the United States. Securing trained teachers for the hard core Inner City public school poses an even greater challenge and additional problem for the public school personnel director

Peer Perceptions of Students without Learning Disabilities toward Students with disabilities and a Self Perceptions of Students with Learning Disabilities

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of the nondisabled students toward students with learning disabilities and the self perceptions of learning disabled students. A survey research design was used for this study. Subjects were students in grades 6-8 with and without disabilities from a rural area in Virginia. The participants who were chosen were general and special education students at the middle school level. The results from this study showed on most issues the two groups agreed, on such topics as friendship, social gathering, and favoritism. Findings indicated students without disabilities are accepting students with disabilities within the school and other social gatherings

Education in the Marshall Islands under United Nations Trusteeship Administered by the United States

The lack of a handbook in the schools of the Marshalls District has resulted in valuable information and history being lost in each successive turnover of personnel in the Trust Territory. Every year brings a group of new recruits into the educational system. This particular handbook contains valuable information on the past history and specific terminology required of one who will teach in this area. Special emphasis was given to the educational system in the Marshall Islands

Incorporating Technology to Decrease Heart Failure Readmission Rates

    Get PDF
The rate of hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge of heart failure (HF) patients affects patient outcomes, the financial stability of the health care facility, and the economy. Hospitals focus on strategies that will decrease the HF readmission rates by cultivating evidence-based interventions that improve patients\u27 transition from the hospital to the community, including promoting self-management of their condition. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop, implement, and evaluate the use of health information technology along with written forms of plans of care to assist HF patients in managing their care, divert the HF patients to the physician\u27s office rather than the emergency room, and decrease the hospitalization readmission rate within 30 days of discharge. A multidisciplinary team consisting of HF nurses, a cardiologist, and a pharmacist, utilized the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality guidelines to develop a HF checklist to assist in data collection. Nurses communicated with HF patients post discharge using electronic devices to reinforce discharge instructions, assess medication compliance, and encourage self-management. The less than 30-day readmission rate for the 10 patients in the pilot group was 20%, an improvement over the hospital rate of 30%. The 20% that were readmitted did not used their written discharge instructions, but the 80% that were not readmitted used their written discharge instructions with their electronic devices. This DNP project will promote positive social change by improving HF patients\u27 outcomes and quality of life, and present health care provider interventions to decrease HF hospital readmission rates

Examining an Employee Awards Information System: A Qualitative Study

The U.S. military is an organization that uses an automated system to process its members’ awards for approval, similar to other organization. Awarding members for performance has been identified as a great way to escalate job motivation and increase the feeling of inclusion and loyalty to organization and even lead to job retention. In the midst of the current environment and COVID-19 working conditions, it is even more important to show appreciation and gratitude. The U.S. military uses what is known as Global Electronic Approval Routing System (GEARS) to process these awards.  Notwithstanding the perceived advantages of utilizing the type of framework, people have communicated uncertainties about its ability to process the administrative documentation effectively and sufficiently, and in turn leading to the opposite effect, decreased motivation and job satisfaction.  The study examines the effect that the GEARS has on processing awards on time while applying three theories that set the conceptual framework: Herzberg's Two Factory theory, Technology Acceptance Model, and Task Technology Fit Theory.  The study used the qualitative descriptive method in its overall approach to answer research questions regarding how GEARS is affecting the submission and approval of service members’ awards for commendable performance and behavior and how GEARS is perceived to fit the requirement to complete tasks and activities associated with processing awards. The researchers used three instruments to gather data.  Data were collected from 15 participants using a questionnaire and interviews.  Relevant information was also gathered from archived data and five themes emerged from the analysis of the data, which support the theories and help to provide recommendations for future success

Using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to identify and predict microRNAs (miRNAs) potentially affecting Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

The last decade has seen considerable research focusing on understanding the factors underlying schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. A major challenge encountered in studying these disorders, however, has been the contribution of genetic, or etiological, heterogeneity to the so-called “missing heritability” [1-6]. Further, recent successes of large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have nonetheless seen only limited advancements in the delineation of the specific roles of implicated genes in disease pathophysiology. The study of microRNAs (miRNAs), given their ability to alter the transcription of hundreds of targeted genes, has the potential to expand our understanding of how certain genes relate to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Indeed, the strongest finding of one recent mega-analysis by the Psychiatric GWAS consortium (PGC) was for a miRNA, though little can be said presently about its particular role in the etiologies of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder [52]. Next generation sequencing (NGS) is a versatile technology that can be used to directly sequence either DNA or RNA, thus providing valuable information on variation in the genome and in the transcriptome. A variation of NGS, MicroSeq, focuses on small RNAs and can be used to detect novel, as well as known, miRNAs [26,125, 126]. The following thesis describes the role of miRNAs in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in various experimental settings. As an index of the interaction between multiple genes and between the genome and the environment, miRNAs are great potential biomarkers for complex disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

The military is an organization that uses an automated system, Global Electronic Approval Routing System (GEARS), to process service members’ awards for approval. Despite the recognized benefits of using the system, some individuals expressed concerns about its impact on the approval process because documents such as awards are not processed on time. This has the potential to impact an individual’s motivation and job satisfaction. The study applied the Herzberg’s Two Factory theory, Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Task Technology Fit (TTF) theory to investigate whether GEARS was effectively processing awards promptly. Using the qualitative descriptive method, 15 participants perspectives were captured on a questionnaire through interviews. Archived data relevant to the topic of discussion was collected as well. The data analysis revealed the emergence of 5 themes, which supports the theories. The paper concludes with key implications and recommendations for businesses, military, and practitioners
