Mask Use pattern, Public Perception and Barriers to Effective Mask Usage-A battle far from over
Background & Objective: Proper mask wearing reduces the transmissibility and risk of Covid-19 infection still compliance to mask use is low. This study was conducted to observe the mask usage pattern, perception and barriers to effective mask usage (EMU). Settings and Design: This cross-sectional study was conducted in collaboration with district police administration to observe mask usage pattern in various crowded places. Methods and Material: Participants from general public (n=6995) in 10 preselected areas of city were observed and then interviewed about their perceptions about EMU. Indirect observation of EMU was also done by screening CCTV footage, followed by another set of observation at same places after conducting a health education campaign. Data was entered in Microsoft excel and analyzed using SPSS. P value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: EMU was seen in nearly 62% participants. Younger age, native population, education above matric, persons driving two & four wheelers, had significantly higher compliance. During CCTV observation, EMU was 57.5%, and was highest near public places, roads and intersections while lowest near bus stand and religious places. Some improvement in compliance was seen after health education at these places. Breathing difficulty, no use of wearing mask and feeling uncomfortable were the most common reasons given by participants for non-compliance.Conclusions: EMU was lower in elderly, migrants, less educated, unemployed, daily wage workers, so these groups should be especially sensitized about preventive measures. There is need for extensive public education to bring out behavioral change regarding proper mask wearing to control this pandemic and prevent further waves
Cytotoxicity of Graphene Oxide (GO) and Graphene Oxide Conjugated Losartan Potassium (GO-LP) on Neuroblastoma (NB41A3) Cells
Despite several advancements in the biomedical sciences, an efficient cancer therapy still remains a challenge. Nanomedicines have shown potential to overcome certain roadblocks faced in the existing treatment modalities. Losartan potassium (LP) which is a known vasodilator also exhibits anti fibrolytic and anti-metastatic properties altogether. Further, also being a potential angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist, it has been well explored for down regulating tumourogenic biomarkerslike VEGF-A (Vascular endothelial growth factor A) and suppression of neovascularization, making it a suitable drug to target for cancer treatment. Besides this, it too reflected the stimulation of pro apoptotic signaling pathways. But due to its lower bioavailability and extensive hepatic metabolism its therapeutic index reduces down. Thus, the present study is focused on designing a nano-delivery system using graphene oxide (GO) as a nano-vehicle and conjugated the LP with it. Then, the successful synthesis of GO and GO-LP nano conjugates were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR and UV visible spectroscopy, confirming the formation of nanosheets. The qualitative morphological evaluation of NB41A3 neuroblastoma cell line treated with bare GO, LP and GO-LP using microscopy and DAPI staining revealed the inhibitory action of GO-LP nano conjugate on cell proliferation. Additionally, the cytotoxicity was also estimated using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide), Nitric oxide (NO) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays. The results show that GO-LP significantly suppresses the cell viability in comparison to control and bare GO suggesting that the designed system may express its potential to be used with existing chemo drugs for the treatment of neural cancers
Schwannoma causing greater occipital nerve neuralgia: Case report
Schwannomas are benign tumors that originate from the Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. They can arise from any myelinated nerve. The pre-operative diagnosis of schwannoma is difficult and should be suggested by clinical features and supported by investigations based on techniques such as ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, and fine-needle aspiration cytology. Schawannomas can present with very subtle symptoms or morbid sequel. A 19-year-old male patient presented with 6 months history of swelling in the upper left side part of the neck. Local examination showed a 5 cm and times; 3 cm single globular mass in the left suboccipital region. The contrast enhanced CT scan showed a 44 mm and times; 46 mm and times; 39 mm well defined heterogeneous mildly enhancing mass on the left side of the upper three cervical vertebras abutting them. The mass was excised under general anesthesia by transcervical approach. After extensive search of English literature we came across only three case reports where schwannoma of greater occipital nerve presented with neuralgia. [Arch Clin Exp Surg 2016; 5(1.000): 59-62
Triclosan: Current Status, Occurrence, Environmental Risks and Bioaccumulation Potential
Triclosan (TCS) is a multi-purpose antimicrobial agent used as a common ingredient in everyday household personal care and consumer products. The expanded use of TCS provides a number of pathways for the compound to enter the environment and it has been detected in sewage treatment plant effluents; surface; ground and drinking water. The physico-chemical properties indicate the bioaccumulation and persistence potential of TCS in the environment. Hence, there is an increasing concern about the presence of TCS in the environment and its potential negative effects on human and animal health. Nevertheless, scarce monitoring data could be one reason for not prioritizing TCS as emerging contaminant. Conventional water and wastewater treatment processes are unable to completely remove the TCS and even form toxic intermediates. Considering the worldwide application of personal care products containing TCS and inefficient removal and its toxic effects on aquatic organisms, the compound should be considered on the priority list of emerging contaminants and its utilization in all products should be regulated
