    Analysis of load displacement in grape harvesters and corresponding effect on dynamic weighing system under laboratory conditions

    Harvester bin dynamic weighing systems are affected by a number of sources of variation such as field slopes and load displacement. In grape harvesters, the nature of the material (wine grapes and wine grape juice) and its relative composition can vary significantly. Laboratory tests were carried out using hydrogel spheres and water to simulate field dynamic conditions during harvest. This paper quantifies the sources of variation, submitting an instrumented grape harvester to graduated inclination under shaking conditions. Load displacement is characterized using image analysis from recorded movies on four different pitch axis motions of the machine: front to horizontal, horizontal to rear, rear to horizontal and horizontal to front. Differences in the displacement of the load in relation to the machine inclination and to the load composition have been addressed

    Spectrum of arthroscopic findings in 84 canine elbow joints diagnosed with medial compartment erosion

    Elbow dysplasia is an important cause of forelimb lameness in large breed dogs. The aim of this study was to report on the arthroscopic findings associated with medial compartment erosion (MCE) of the canine elbow joint. Retrospectively, records of 84 elbow joints from 66 dogs diagnosed arthroscopically with MCE were retrieved from a medical records database (2008 - 2012). The radiographic degree of osteoarthritis was determined. Arthroscopic images and videos were evaluated in detail. In nine joints (10.7%), MCE was the only pathological finding (= group 1). Group 2 (n = 50, 59.5%) consisted of elbows with MCE concomitant with medial coronoid process (MCP) pathology. In group 3 (n = 25 joints, 29.8%), MCE was diagnosed during a second-look arthroscopy in dogs presented with lameness after arthroscopic treatment for medial coronoid disease. There was a significant age difference (p < 0.001) between the groups, with dogs in group 1 being the oldest. Complete erosion of the medial compartment was most commonly found in group 1, whereas focal cartilage erosion was mostly identified in group 2. Overall, additional cartilage pathology of the lateral part of the humeral condyle and/or the radial head was recognized in 58.3% of the joints (49/84)

    Predictors of Word and Text Reading Fluency of Deaf Children in Bilingual Deaf Education Programmes

Bimodal bilingual education creates a supportive environment that stimulates deaf children’s learning through the use of sign language. However, it is still unclear how exposure to sign language might contribute to improving reading ability. Here, we investigate the relative contribution of several cognitive and linguistic variables to the development of word and text reading fluency in deaf children in bimodal bilingual education programmes. The participants of this study were 62 school-aged (8 to 10 years old at the start of the 3-year study) deaf children who took part in bilingual education (using Dutch and Sign Language of The Netherlands) and 40 age-matched hearing children. We assessed vocabulary knowledge in speech and sign, phonological awareness in speech and sign, receptive fingerspelling ability, and short-term memory at time 1 (T1). At times 2 (T2) and 3 (T3), we assessed word and text reading fluency. We found that (1) speech-based vocabulary strongly predicted word and text reading at T2 and T3, (2) fingerspelling ability was a strong predictor of word and text reading fluency at T2 and T3, (3) speech-based phonological awareness predicted word reading accuracy at T2 and T3 but did not predict text reading fluency, and (4) fingerspelling and STM predicted word reading latency at T2 while sign-based phonological awareness predicted this outcome measure at T3. These results suggest that fingerspelling may have an important function in facilitating the construction of orthographical/phonological representations of printed words for deaf children and strengthening word decoding and recognition abilitiesThis research received no external funding

    The effectiveness of a fundamental motor skill intervention in pre-schoolers with motor problems depends on gender but not environmental context

    This study evaluated the effect of a 10-week fundamental motor skill programme in pre-schoolers with motor problems. Alongside the general effect of the intervention, we also explored possible gender differences and the role of the environmental context (living community, socio-economic status, and recreational space inside/outside the house). The intervention group (n=47; 20 ♂ and 27 ♀) received twenty 60-min motor skill sessions (2 per week) in addition to the regular physical education curriculum for pre-schoolers; the control group (n=46; 21 ♂ and 25 ♀) did not receive additional practice. General motor competence, and locomotor and object control subscales, were assessed before and after the intervention using the Test of Gross Motor Development 2nd edition (TGMD-2). Data regarding environmental factors were gathered through a questionnaire. A Group×Gender×Time ANOVA revealed that the intervention group benefited significantly from the intervention and scored better than the control group at the post-test for general motor competence and both sub-categories (locomotor and object control skill). Moreover, the intervention programme was found to be effective in helping 49% of the intervention group to achieve an average motor skill level, according to the TGMD-2 norms, while a further decline in motor competence was observed in the control group. Interestingly, the effect appeared to be gender-specific, since object control skill improved only in girls of the intervention group. Considering the environmental context, none of the above-mentioned factors was found to have an influence on the effectiveness of the intervention. The present study highlights the need for an early motor skill programme with a gender-specific approach in order to help low skilled boys and girls master a diverse set of motor skills

    Potential improvement of pregnancy outcome through prenatal small for gestational age detection

OBJECTIVE: To assess differences in mode of delivery and pregnancy outcome between prenatally detected and nonprenatally detected small for gestational age (SGA) neonates born at term.STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective multicenter cohort study. All singleton infants, born SGA in cephalic position between 36(0/7) and 41(0/7) weeks gestation, were classified as either prenatally detected SGA or nonprenatally detected SGA. With propensity score matching we created groups with comparable baseline characteristics. We compared these groups for composite adverse perinatal outcome, labor induction, and cesarean section rates.RESULTS: We included 718 SGA infants, of whom 555 (77%) were not prenatally detected. Composite adverse neonatal outcome did not differ statistically significant between the matched prenatally detected and the nonprenatally detected group (5.5 vs. 7.4%, odds ratio [OR] 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.30-1.8). However, perinatal mortality only occurred in the nonprenatally detected group (1.8% [3/163] in the matched cohort, 1.3% [7/555] in the complete cohort). In the propensity matched prenatally detected SGA group both induction of labor (57 vs. 9%, OR 14.0, 95% CI: 7.4-26.2) and cesarean sections (20 vs. 8%, OR 2.9, 95% CI: 1.5-5.8) were more often performed compared with the nonprenatally detected SGA group.CONCLUSION: Prenatal SGA detection at term allows timely induction of labor and cesarean sections thus potentially preventing stillbirth

    Visually guided inspiration breath-hold facilitated with nasal high flow therapy in locally advanced lung cancer

    Background and purpose Reducing breathing motion in radiotherapy (RT) is an attractive strategy to reduce margins and better spare normal tissues. The objective of this prospective study (NCT03729661) was to investigate the feasibility of irradiation of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with visually guided moderate deep inspiration breath-hold (IBH) using nasal high-flow therapy (NHFT). Material and methods Locally advanced NSCLC patients undergoing photon RT were given NHFT with heated humidified air (flow: 40 L/min with 80% oxygen) through a nasal cannula. IBH was monitored by optical surface tracking (OST) with visual feedback. At a training session, patients had to hold their breath as long as possible, without and with NHFT. For the daily cone beam CT (CBCT) and RT treatment in IBH, patients were instructed to keep their BH as long as it felt comfortable. OST was used to analyze stability and reproducibility of the BH, and CBCT to analyze daily tumor position. Subjective tolerance was measured with a questionnaire at 3 time points. Results Of 10 included patients, 9 were treated with RT. Seven (78%) completed the treatment with NHFT as planned. At the training session, the mean BH length without NHFT was 39 s (range 15-86 s), and with NHFT 78 s (range 29-223 s) (p = .005). NHFT prolonged the BH duration by a mean factor of 2.1 (range 1.1-3.9s). The mean overall stability and reproducibility were within 1 mm. Subjective tolerance was very good with the majority of patients having no or minor discomfort caused by the devices. The mean inter-fraction tumor position variability was 1.8 mm (-1.1-8.1 mm;SD 2.4 mm). Conclusion NHFT for RT treatment of NSCLC in BH is feasible, well tolerated and significantly increases the breath-hold duration. Visually guided BH with OST is stable and reproducible. We therefore consider this an attractive patient-friendly approach to treat lung cancer patients with RT in BH

    Understanding neurodevelopmental trajectories and behavioral profiles in SCN1A-related epilepsy syndromes

    Background: A pathogenic variant in SCN1A can result in a spectrum of phenotypes, including Dravet syndrome (DS) and genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS + ) syndrome. Dravet syndrome (DS) is associated with refractory seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability (ID), motor impairment, and challenging behavior(1,2). GEFS + is a less severe phenotype in which cognition is often normal and seizures are less severe. Challenging behavior largely affects quality of life of patients and their families. This study describes the profile and course of the behavioral phenotype in patients with SCN1A-related epilepsy syndromes, explores correlations between behavioral difficulties and potential risk factors. Methods: Data were collected from questionnaires, medical records, and semi-structured interviews. Behavior difficulties were measured using the Adult/Child Behavior Checklist (C/ABCL) and Adult self-report (ASR). Other questionnaires included the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS) and the Sleep Behavior Questionnaire by Simonds & Parraga (SQ-SP). To determine differences in behavioral difficulties longitudinally, paired T-tests were used. Pearson correlation and Spearman rank test were used in correlation analyses and multivariable regression analyses were employed to identify potential risk factors. Results: A cohort of 147 participants, including 107 participants with DS and 40 with genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS + ), was evaluated. Forty-six DS participants (43.0 %) and three GEFS + participants (7.5 %) showed behavioral problems in the clinical range on the A/CBCL total problems scale. The behavioral profile in DS exists out of withdrawn behavior, aggressive behavior, and attention problems. In DS patients, sleep disturbances (β = 1.15, p < 0.001) and a lower age (β = -0.21, p = 0.001) were significantly associated with behavioral difficulties. Between 2015 and 2022, behavioral difficulties significantly decreased with age (t = -2.24, CI = -6.10 – −0.15, p = 0.04) in DS participants aging from adolescence into adulthood. A decrease in intellectual functioning (β = 3.37, p = 0.02) and using less antiseizure medications in 2022 than in 2015, (β = -1.96, p = 0.04), were identified as possible risk factors for developing (more) behavioral difficulties. Conclusions: These findings suggest that, in addition to epilepsy, behavioral difficulties are a core feature of the DS phenotype. Behavioral problems require personalized management and treatment strategies. Further research is needed to identify effective interventions
