The numerical values in the sixth and seventh columns of table 1 of the paper Molec. Phys., 1999, 96, 1185-1188 are not correct. Consequently, some of the comments made in the paper are wrong. The corrected version of table 1 is reprinted here and the results are briefly discussed.Comment: 2 pages; Erratum to Molec. Phys., 1999, 96, 1185-1188; to be published in Molec. Phy

Anisotropic plasma-chemical etching by an electron-beam-generated plasma

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references (page 2466).Anisotropic etching of SiO2 has been achieved with a plasma generated by a broad-area low-energy (150-300 eV) electron beam in a He + CF4 atmosphere. Etch rates of up to 330 Ã…/min for SiO2 and 220 Ã…/min for Si were obtained. Etching occurred with good uniformity over the entire area exposed to the electron-beam-generated plasma. The fluxes of energetic charged particles to the sample surface are discussed in relation to their possible contribution to the etching process

Broad-area electron-beam-assisted etching of silicon in sulfur hexafluoride

    Get PDF
Includes bibliographical references (page 1583).Silicon etching rates up to 250 Ã…/min have been observed in an electron-beam-generated He plus SF6 plasma. The etch rate was found to increase linearly with electron beam current density and to be practically independent of the electron acceleration voltage in the range investigated (170-260 V). Profiles of the resulting features show that etching is anisotropic with a vertical-to-horizontal ratio of 2.5 to 3

Dynamic concentration of motors in microtubule arrays

We present experimental and theoretical studies of the dynamics of molecular motors in microtubule arrays and asters. By solving a convection-diffusion equation we find that the density profile of motors in a two-dimensional aster is characterized by continuously varying exponents. Simulations are used to verify the assumptions of the continuum model. We observe the concentration profiles of kinesin moving in quasi two-dimensional artificial asters by fluorescent microscopy and compare with our theoretical results.Comment: 4pages, 4 figures revte

Update of the NEXT Ion Thruster Service Life Assessment with Post-Test Correlation to the Long Duration Test

    Get PDF
The service life assessment for NASA's Evolutionary Xenon Thruster is updated to incorporate the results from the successful and voluntarily early completion of the 51,184 hour long duration test which demonstrated 918 kg of total xenon throughput. The results of the numerous post-test investigations including destructive interrogations have been assessed against all of the critical known and suspected failure mechanisms to update the life and throughput expectations for each major component. Analysis results of two of the most acute failure mechanisms, namely pit-and-groove erosion and aperture enlargement of the accelerator grid, are not updated in this work but will be published at a future time after analysis completion

High-Power Solar Electric Propulsion for Future NASA Missions

    Get PDF
NASA has sought to utilize high-power solar electric propulsion as means of improving the affordability of in-space transportation for almost 50 years. Early efforts focused on 25 to 50 kilowatt systems that could be used with the Space Shuttle, while later efforts focused on systems nearly an order of magnitude higher power that could be used with heavy lift launch vehicles. These efforts never left the concept development phase in part because the technology required was not sufficiently mature. Since 2012 the NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate has had a coordinated plan to mature the requisite solar array and electric propulsion technology needed to implement a 30 to 50 kilowatt solar electric propulsion technology demonstration mission. Multiple solar electric propulsion technology demonstration mission concepts have been developed based on these maturing technologies with recent efforts focusing on an Asteroid Redirect Robotic Mission. If implemented, the Asteroid Redirect Vehicle will form the basis for a capability that can be cost-effectively evolved over time to provide solar electric propulsion transportation for a range of follow-on mission applications at power levels in excess of 100 kilowatts

Item does not contain fulltextBACKGROUND: Children of patients with young onset dementia (YOD) who are confronted with a parent who has a progressive disease, often assist in caregiving tasks, which may have a great impact on their lives. The objective of the present study is to explore the experiences of children living with a young parent with dementia with a specific focus on the children's needs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 14 adolescent children between the ages of 15 and 27 years of patients with YOD were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Themes were identified based on the established codes. RESULTS: The emerging categories were divided into three themes that demonstrated the impact of dementia on daily life, different ways of coping with the disease, and children's need for care and support. The children had difficulties managing all of the responsibilities and showed concerns about their future. To deal with these problems, they demonstrated various coping styles, such as avoidant or adaptive coping. Although most children were initially reluctant to seek professional care, several of them expressed the need for practical guidance to address the changing behavior of their parent. The children felt more comfortable talking to someone who was familiar with their situation and who had specific knowledge of YOD and the available services. CONCLUSION: In addition to practical information, more accessible and specific information about the diagnosis and the course of YOD is needed to provide a better understanding of the disease for the children. These findings underline the need for a personal, family-centered approach

Greater Blood Pressure Variability Is Associated With Lower Cognitive Performance:The Maastricht Study

    Get PDF
An increasing number of individuals will face age-related cognitive difficulties because life expectancy has increased. It is, therefore, important to identify modifiable risk factors for cognitive impairment. Very short-term to mid-term blood pressure variability (BPV) may be such a factor because it may cause cerebral ischemia. To this end, we investigated whether greater systolic and diastolic BPV are cross-sectionally associated with memory function (n=1804), information processing speed (n=1793), and executive function (n=1780) in 40- to 75-year-old individuals from The Maastricht Study. A composite BPV-index was derived by standardizing within-visit, 24-hour, and 7-day BPV. We performed linear regression with adjustments for age, sex, educational level, 24-hour systolic or diastolic pressure, and cardiovascular risk factors. We found that a 1-SD greater systolic BPV was not associated with information processing speed (β [SD difference], -0.10; 95% CI, -0.14 to 0.06), or executive function (-0.09; 95% CI, -0.20 to 0.02) but was marginally associated with lower memory function (-0.11; 95% CI, -0.21 to 0.00). A 1-SD greater diastolic BPV was associated with lower information processing speed (-0.10; 95% CI, -0.20 to -0.00) and executive function (-0.12; 95% CI, -0.22 to -0.01) and marginally associated with lower memory function (-0.09; 95% CI, -0.20 to 0.01). These effects on cognitive performance are equivalent to ≈3 additional years of aging. In conclusion, greater very short-term to mid-term diastolic and, to a lesser extent, systolic BPV may be a modifiable risk factor for cognitive deterioration in 40- to 75-year-old, community-dwelling individuals
