Electrowetting on superhydrophobic SU-8 patterned surfaces
Electrowetting on micro-patterned layers of SU-8 photoresist with an amorphous Teflon (R) coating has been observed. The cosine of the contact angle is shown to be proportional to the square of the applied voltage for increasing bias. However, this does not apply below 40 V and we suggest that this may be explained in terms of penetration of fluid into the pattern of the surface. Assuming that the initial application of a bias voltage converts the drop from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel regime, we have used this as a technique to estimate the roughness factor of the surface
Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation for Extremely Low Mass Galaxies
We study Tully-Fisher relations for a sample that combines extremely faint
(M_B > -14.0) galaxies along with bright (i.e. L_*) galaxies. Accurate (~ 10%)
distances, I band photometry, and B-V colors are known for the majority of the
galaxies in our sample. The faint galaxies are drawn from the Faint Irregular
Galaxy GMRT survey (FIGGS), and we have HI rotation velocities derived from
aperture synthesis observations for all of them. For the faint galaxies, we
find that even though the median HI and stellar masses are comparable, the HI
mass correlates significantly better with the circular velocity indicators than
the stellar mass. We also find that W correlates better with mass than
the rotation velocity, although the difference is not statistically
significant. The faint galaxies lie systematically below the I band TF relation
defined by bright galaxies, and also show significantly more intrinsic scatter.
This implies that the integrated star formation in these galaxies has been both
less efficient and also less regulated than in large galaxies. We find that
while the faint end deviation is greatly reduced in Baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF)
relations, the existence of a break at the faint end of the BTF is subject to
systematics such as the assumed stellar mass to light ratio. If we assume that
there is an intrinsic BTF and try to determine the baryonic mass by searching
for prescriptions that lead to the tightest BTF, we find that scaling the HI
mass leads to a much more significant tightening than scaling the stellar mass
to light ratio. The most significant tightening that we find however, is if we
scale the entire baryonic mass of the faint (but not the bright) galaxies. Such
a scenario would be consistent with models where dwarf (but not large) galaxies

Why holes are not like electrons. II. The role of the electron-ion interaction
In recent work, we discussed the difference between electrons and holes in
energy band in solids from a many-particle point of view, originating in the
electron-electron interaction, and argued that it has fundamental consequences
for superconductivity. Here we discuss the fact that there is also a
fundamental difference between electrons and holes already at the single
particle level, arising from the electron-ion interaction. The difference
between electrons and holes due to this effect parallels the difference due to
electron-electron interactions: {\it holes are more dressed than electrons}. We
propose that superconductivity originates in 'undressing' of carriers from
electron-electron and electron-ion interactions, and that both aspects

Local quenches in fracton field theory: non-causal dynamics and fractal excitation patterns
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics induced by a local perturbation in
fracton field theory. For the and -symmetric
free fractonic theories, we compute the time dynamics of several observables
such as the two-point Green function, condensate,
energy density, and the dipole momentum. The time-dependent considerations
highlight that the free fractonic theory breaks causality and exhibits
instantaneous signal propagation, even if an additional relativistic term is
included to enforce a speed limit in the system. For the theory in finite
volume, we show that the fracton wave front acquires fractal shape with
non-trivial Hausdorff dimension, and argue that this phenomenon cannot be

Classification of radical hysterectomy adopted by the Gynecological Cancer Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer
The Piver classification of radical hysterectomy for the treatment of cervical cancer is outdated and misused. The Surgery Committee of the Gynecological Cancer Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) produced, approved, and adopted a revised classification. It is hoped that at least within the EORTC participating centers, a standardization of procedures is achieved. The clinical indications of the new classification are discussed
Intestinal motility distal of a deviating ileostomy after rectal resection with the construction of a primary anastomosis:results of the prospective COLO-MOVE study
Purpose No consensus exists regarding the use of preoperative bowel preparation for patients undergoing a low anterior resection (LAR). Several comparative studies show similar outcomes when a single time enema (STE) is compared with mechanical bowel preparation (MBP). It is hypothesized that STE is comparable with MBP due to a decrease in intestinal motility distal of a newly constructed diverting ileostomy (DI). Methods In this prospective single-centre cohort study, patients undergoing a LAR with primary anastomosis and DI construction were given a STE 2 h pre-operatively. Radio-opaque markers were inserted in the efferent loop of the DI during surgery, and plain abdominal X-rays were made during the first, third, fifth and seventh postoperative day to visualize intestinal motility. Results Thirty-nine patients were included. Radio-opaque markers were situated in the ileum or right colon in 100%, 100% and 97.1% of the patients during respectively the first, third and fifth postoperative day. One patient had its most distal marker situated in the left colon during day five. In none of the patients, the markers were seen distal of the anastomosis. Conclusion Intestinal motility distally of the DI is decreased in patients who undergo a LAR resection with the construction of an anastomosis and DI, while preoperatively receiving a STE
