Looking for adaptive footprints in the HSP90AA1 ovine gene
BackgroundClimatic factors play an important role in determining species distributions and phenotypic variation of populations over geographic space. Since domestic sheep is managed under low intensive systems animals could have retained some genome adaptive footprints. The gene encoding the Hsp90? has been extensively studied in sheep and some polymorphisms located at its promoter have been associates with differences in the transcription rate of the gene depending on climatic conditions. In this work the relationships among the distribution and frequencies of 11 polymorphisms of the ovine HSP90AA1 gene promoter in 31 sheep breeds and the climatic and geographic variables prevailing in their regions of origin have been studied. Also the promoter sequence has been characterized in 9 species of the Caprinae subfamily. ResultsCorrelations among several climatic variables and allele frequencies of the polymorphisms of the HSP90AA1 gene promoter linked with differences in the transcription activity of the gene under heat stress conditions have been assessed. A group of breeds reared in semi dry climates have high frequencies of the insertion allele of the g.667-668insC associated with the heat stress response. Other group of breeds native to semi arid conditions showed very low frequencies of this same allele. However, in some cases, this previous correlation has not been achieved, revealing the high levels of gene flow among populations occurred following domestication. The Bayesian Test of Beaumont and Balding identified two outlier loci, the g.522A?>?G and g.703_704del(2)A candidates to balancing and directional selection, respectively. Polymorphisms detected in O. aries are also present in several species of the Caprinae subfamily being C. hircus, O. musimon and O. moschatus those sharing the highest number of them with O. aries.ConclusionsDespite domestication, sheep breeds showed some genetic footprints related to climatic variables. Adaptation of breeds to heat climates can suppose a selective advantage to cope with global warming caused by climatic change. Polymorphisms of the HSP90AA1 gene detected in the Ovis aries species are also present in wild species from the Caprinae subfamily, indicating a great antiquity of these mutations and its importance in the adaptation of species to past climatic conditions existing in its native environments.Publishe
ERISNet: deep neural network for Sargassum detection along the coastline of the Mexican Caribbean
Recently, Caribbean coasts have experienced atypical massive arrivals of pelagic Sargassum with negative consequences both ecologically and economically. Based on deep learning techniques, this study proposes a novel algorithm for floating and accumulated pelagic Sargassum detection along the coastline of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Using convolutional and recurrent neural networks architectures, a deep neural network (named ERISNet) was designed specifically to detect these macroalgae along the coastline through remote sensing support. A new dataset which includes pixel values with and without Sargassum was built to train and test ERISNet. Aqua-MODIS imagery was used to build the dataset. After the learning process, the designed algorithm achieves a 90% of probability in its classification skills. ERISNet provides a novel insight to detect accurately algal blooms arrivals
Algorithms applied for monitoring pelagic Sargassum
Massive arrivals of pelagic Sargassum to the coasts of several countries in the Atlantic Ocean began in 2011. Monitoring the abundance and distribution of Sargassum in the ocean and along the coasts is necessary to understand the phenomena better and develop forecasting products and management protocols. Most Sargassum monitoring has been conducted in the open ocean through traditional remote sensing techniques. However, since the most significant ecologic and socioeconomic impacts occur on the coasts, it is necessary to monitor these macroalgae on nearshore waters and beaches. This manuscript reviews the remote sensing algorithms used in Sargassum observation reported in the last 17 years in more than sixty high-impact scientific publications. The discussion regarding the evolution of the methodologies used for monitoring these macroalgae allowed us to conclude that the synergy generated by incorporating new disciplines like artificial intelligence and citizen science has positively impacted the development of this field. Additionally, the current state-of-the-art methods, the fundamental challenges, and the directions for future research are also discussed
A SNP in the HSP90AA1 gene 5âČ flanking region is associated with the adaptation to differential thermal conditions in the ovine species
Molecular chaperones have long been understood
to be preferentially transcribed in response to multiple
perturbations of the cellular homeostasis. In this study,
several polymorphisms in the gene encoding the inducible
form of the cytoplasmic Hsp90 (HSP90AA1) were
addressed in 24 sheep breeds reared in different climatic
regions of Europe, Africa, and Asia. Significant differences
in the genotype frequencies for a C/G single nucleotide
polymorphism (SNP) located at position â660 in the
HSP90AA1 5âČflanking region were found between the
different breeds. Regression analyses reflected significant
correlations (from 0.41 to 0.62) between the alternative
genotypes of this polymorphism and several climatic and
geographic variables characteristic of the regions where
these breeds are reared. Real-time analysis revealed that
animals bearing the CCâ660 genotype presented higher
expression levels than those presenting the CGâ660 or
GGâ660 in summer, but not in spring. Mutation at â660
site seems to affect HSP90AA1 transcription rates which
could have important effects on the adaptation to different
environmental conditions in sheep. Thus, the variability
found in the genotype frequencies for the SNP at â660 in
the ovine HSP90AA1 locus could be the result of the
different environmental pressures occurring in the regions

Executive function and IQ predict mathematical and attention problems in very preterm children
Objective of this study was to examine the impact of executive function (EF) on mathematical and attention problems in very preterm (gestational age †30 weeks) children. Participants were 200 very preterm (mean age 8.2 ± 2.5 years) and 230 term children (mean age 8.3 ± 2.3 years) without severe disabilities, born between 1996 and 2004. Incidence and hospital mortality due to heart failure. Are there any differences by sex?
Background: Gender may influence the incidence, severity and hospital mortality due to heart failure (HF). Aim: To evaluate the influence of sex on the proportion of patients hospitalized due to heart failure, its incidence and hospital mortality. Methods: Analysis of the hospital discharge database of the Chilean Ministry of Health during 2014. All hospital admissions for HF were considered according to ICD-10 codes, including the discharge diagnosis of congestive HF (7500), left ventricular HF (1501) and non-specified HF (1509). Incidence rates, proportion of discharges due to HF and hospital mortality were calculated according to age and sex. Results: During 2014, there were 1,306,431 discharges from Chilean hospitals. Of these, 125,484 were for cardiovascular disease and 10% of these corresponded to HF (12,825). The incidence rate was slightly higher in men than in women (0.71 and 0.70 per 1,000 admissions respectively). Among patients aged 80 years or more, the prevalence of admissions for HF was higher in women (19.1 and 15.9% respectively, p < 0.01). Hospital mortality was also higher in women (9.7 and 8.6% respectively, p = 0.03). The factors associated with a higher hospital mortality were an age over 80 years (Odds Ratio (OR) 2.11; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.87-2.40; p < 0.01), a length of stay over seven days (OR 1.13; 95%CI: 1.01-1.29; p = 0.04), being admitted to high complexity facilities (OR 1.29; 95%CI: 1.12-1.50; p = 0.01) and being insured by the public national health fund (OR 1.94; 95%CI: 1.54-2.43; p < 0.01). Conclusions: The incidence of hospital admissions due to HF is similar in men and women. There is high hospital mortality, especially in women
