Ultracold collisions of metastable helium atoms
We report scattering lengths for the singlet Sigma g +, triplet Sigma u + and
quintet Sigma g + adiabatic molecular potentials relevant to collisions of two
metastable (n=2 triplet S) helium atoms as a function of the uncertainty in
these potentials. These scattering lengths are used to calculate experimentally
observable scattering lengths, elastic cross sections and inelastic rates for
any combination of states of the colliding atoms, at temperatures where the

Creation of a molecular condensate by dynamically melting a Mott-insulator
We propose creation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by loading
an atomic BEC into an optical lattice and driving it into a Mott insulator (MI)
with exactly two atoms per site. Molecules in a MI state are then created under
well defined conditions by photoassociation with essentially unit efficiency.
Finally, the MI is melted and a superfluid state of the molecules is created.
We study the dynamics of this process and photoassociation of tightly trapped

Regulation of the p-hydroxybenzoic acid hydroxylase gene (pobA) in plant-growth-promoting Pseudomonas putida WCS358
The regulation of the p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase gene (pobA) of Pseudomonas putida WC5358 involved in the catabolism of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHB) to the central intermediate protocatechuate was studied. Protocatechuic acid (PCA) is then degraded via the beta -ketoadipate pathway to form tricarboxylic acid intermediates. In several Gram-negative bacteria pobA has been found genetically linked to a regulator called pobR which activates pobA expression in response to PHB, In this study the identification and characterization of the pobC-pobA locus of P, putida WCS358 is presented. The p-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase (PobA) is highly identical to other identified PobA proteins, whereas the regulatory protein PobC did not display very high identity to other PobR proteins studied and belonged to the AraC family of regulatory proteins, hence it has been designated PobC, Using the pobA promoter transcriptionally fused to a promoterless lad gene it was observed that induction via PobC occurred very efficiently when PHB was present and to a lesser but still significant level also in the presence of PCA, This PobC-PCA response was genetically demonstrated by making use of pobC::Tn5 and pcaH::Tn5 mutants of strain WC5358 constructed in this study. In pobC mutants both the p-hydroxybenzoic and PCA response were not observed, whereas in the pcaH mutant, which lacks a functional protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase, the protocatechuic-acid-dependent pobA activation was still observed. Finally, the activation of pobA by PHB varied according to the concentration and it was observed that in the pcaR::Tn5 regulatory mutant of strain WCS358 the pobA promoter activity was reduced. PcaR is a regulator involved in the regulation of several loci of the beta -ketoadipate pathway, one of which is pcaK, It was postulated that the reduction of pobA activation in pcaR::Tn5 mutants was because there was no expression of the pcaK gene encoding the PHB transport protein resulting in lower levels of PHB present inside the cell
The Broad Line Radio Galaxy J2114+820
In the frame of the study of a new sample of large angular size radio
galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, we have made radio observations
of J2114+820, a low power radio galaxy with an angular size of 6'. Its radio
structure basically consists of a prominent core, a jet directed in north-west
direction and two extended S-shaped lobes. We have also observed the optical
counterpart of J2114+820, a bright elliptical galaxy with a strong unresolved
central component. The optical spectrum shows broad emission lines. This fact,
together with its low radio power and FR-I type morphology, renders J2114+820 a
non-trivial object from the point of view of the current unification schemes of

The galactic magnetic field in the quasar 3C216
Multifrequency polarimetric observations made with the Very Long Baseline
Array of the quasar 3C216 reveal the presence of Faraday rotation measures
(RMs) in excess of 2000 rad/m**2 in the source rest frame, in the arc of
emission located at ~ 140 mas from the core. Rotation measures in the range
-300 - +300 rad/m**2 are detected in the inner 5 mas (~30 parsecs). while the
rotation measures near the core can be explained as due to a magnetic field in
the narrow line region, we favor the interpretation for the high RM in the arc
as due to a ``local'' Faraday screen, produced in a shock where the jet is
deflected by the interstellar medium of the host galaxy. Our results indicate
that a galacit magnetic field of the order of 50 microGauss on a scale greater

Black hole and the adiabatic phase
An open system consisting of a scalar field bound to a Kerr black hole whose
mass () and specific angular momentum () are slowly (adiabatically)
perturbed is considered. The adiabatically induced phase and the conditions for
the validity of the adiabatic approximation are obtained. The effect of closed
cycles in parameter space (, plane) on the energy levels of both stable
and unstable scalar field bound states, together with other quantities of
interest, is illustrated. Lastly it is noted that the black hole wavefunction
will acquire an equal and opposite phase to that of matter thus leading to a

The influence of packaging on the sensorial evolution of white wine as a function of the operating conditions adopted during storage
With the aim to determine the influence of packaging in preserving the quality of wine, in this research project the sensorial evolution of a white table wine stored in different packaging materials (glass bottles provided with different closures; bag-in-box (BiB) containers; tetrabricks®) and different volumes (2 volumes for each packaging) has been evaluated over a period of 12 months. For each packaging solution two different temperature levels (4° and 20°C) were also maintained throughout the storage period. The preliminary results obtained indicate that wine evolution (characterized by both sensorial and chemical parameters) might be greatly influenced by the packaging characteristics. In particular in glass bottle, the crown cap allowed the best storage conditions for wine, closely followed by natural cork, while the wine maintained in tetrabricks® showed the worst organoleptic profile with the maximum level of oxidation and the highest evolutionary state, closely followed by the wine packaged in BiB containers
Impact of sialyltransferase ST6GAL1 overexpression on different colon cancer cell types
Cancer-associated glycan structures can be both tumor markers and engines of disease progression. The structure Sia\u3b12,6Gal\u3b21,4GlcNAc (Sia6LacNAc), synthesized by sialyltransferase ST6GAL1, is a cancer-associated glycan. Although ST6GAL1/Sia6LacNAc are often overexpressed in colorectal cancer (CRC), their biological and clinical significance remains unclear. To get insights into the clinical relevance of ST6GAL1 expression in CRC, we interrogated The Cancer Genome Atlas with mRNA expression data of hundreds of clinically characterized CRC and normal samples. We found an association of low ST6GAL1 expression with microsatellite instability (MSI), BRAF mutations and mucinous phenotype but not with stage, response to therapy and survival. To investigate the impact of ST6GAL1 expression in experimental systems, we analyzed the transcriptome and the phenotype of the CRC cell lines SW948 and SW48 after retroviral transduction with ST6GAL1 cDNA. The two cell lines display the two main pathways of CRC transformation: chromosomal instability and MSI, respectively. Constitutive ST6GAL1 expression induced much deeper transcriptomic changes in SW948 than in SW48 and affected different genes in the two cell lines. ST6GAL1 expression affected differentially the tyrosine phosphorylation induced by hepatocyte growth factor, the ability to grow in soft agar, to heal a scratch wound and to invade Matrigel in the two cell lines. These results indicate that the altered expression of a cancer-associated glycosyltransferase impacts the gene expression profile, as well as the phenotype, although in a cancer subtype-specific manner
