The First World Trade Center Project: A Historical Tribute to a Great Mega Project

    Get PDF
The tragic collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 could not erase the memory of one of the most successful projects in history. The project set standards of excellence in project management for years to come. Using a retrospective look at the construction management of the WTC during the 1960s and 1970s, we show how the vision of great leadership and a determined organization transformed the economy of one of the most important cities in the world

Jordan’s Political Public Sphere: Understanding the Youth’s Awareness and Perceptions of the Constitutional Reforms in the Post-Arab Spring Era

This study evaluates Jordanian youth’s awareness and perceptions of the constitutional amendments of 2011 and explores the youth’s main sources of political news. I hypothesized that a majority of young Jordanians are largely uninformed about the amendments and expected that the main source of news for most young Jordanians were official media sources. My research data consists of survey responses, given by 65 students from the University of Jordan, as well as five interviews with young Jordanians. My findings proved that the Jordanian youth has a low level of awareness about the recent political reforms, and the main news sources used by the youth are government affiliated. I argue that these results are indicative of the limitations the youth in Jordan face in the political public sphere. The political public sphere in Jordan largely prohibits the ability of citizens to articulate “common concerns,” there is a lack of inclusivity and equality within the public sphere, and critical-rational debate is severely limited. Therefore, despite the marginal political improvements of the recent constitutional reforms, significant political reform is unlikely to develop without a more open and robust political public sphere

Eating with Type: Designing a Letterpress Workshop Based on Typeful Thinking Approach for Food Education

    Get PDF
Starting from the observation of an evident precariousness in the contemporary relationship between man and food, this contribution is meant to show a new proposal of workshops for children in the K=12, Grade 4–5 category, aimed at stimulating in a creative and experiential way a critical and conscious thinking about food. Starting from the methodology of Artful Thinking and Object Based Learning, the project shifts the pedagogical focus from the interaction with the artistic object to the interaction with the design object; and in particular with the movable type, identified as an activating element of the educational process in the transition from Artful to Typeful Thinking. The Typeful Thinking workshop therefore represents a potentially innovative food education tool that leverages on the concretisation of critical thinking through five thinking routines that go from conceptual abstraction - through a physical artefact, the letterpress printing - to their tangibility

Travel-Associated Diseases: Trends, Knowledge’s, Attitudes and Practices

    Get PDF
Background: Travelers are at risk of acquiring disease while abroad. Travel–associated diseases can cause a range of illnesses and if left untreated, become fatal. Although preventable, the public health burden of these diseases remains significant. Very little is known about how travelers perceive risk associated with travel. Objective: Assess various aspects of travel health by administering a knowledge attitudes and practice survey and conducting a case-series analysis of five travel-associated diseases in Philadelphia residents from 2004-2009. Methods: The survey was administered to individuals waiting to board an international flight at the Philadelphia International Airport in March. The travel-associated diseases analyzed in the case-series analysis were defined as persons diagnosed with malaria, dengue, amebiasis, giardia, or hepatitis A that reported a history of travel during their investigation. Results: Approximately 201/246 (82%) persons completed the survey. Only 20% of the individuals reported obtaining pre-travel health advice. Approximately 21% could correctly identify all of the potentially harmful foods. Case-series analysis data showed from 2004–2009, 85/85 (100%) malaria, 10/10 (100%) dengue, 21/92 (23%) hepatitis A, 172/548 (31%) giardia, and 19/65 (29%) amebiasis cases were attributed to travel in Philadelphia. Among hepatitis A cases 100% did not receive vaccine and 58% of malaria cases did not take prophylaxis. Conclusion: Despite travel health recommendations, travelers are not utilizing preventative measures available to them including pre-travel health advice, vaccination, and prophylaxis. Respondent’s knowledge of potential risk associated with travel appears low. To address gaps in knowledge educational efforts need to address all travelers about potential risks associated with travel.M.P.H., Public Health -- Drexel University, 201

Il manifesto politico, oggi. Intervista a Bruno Magno

Retaining intensive care nurses in Las Vegas: The importance of nurse manager leadership

In today\u27s healthcare climate, retaining staff nurses is desirable and may be a more permanent solution to improve the nursing shortage. Employing a leadership style that is conducive to staff nurse job satisfaction may be needed to achieve that goal. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the unit manager leadership style with job satisfaction and intent to stay in the intensive care setting. Staff nurses in two Las Vegas hospitals, one private and one public, were surveyed. A questionnaire was developed and voluntarily completed by 125 registered nurses employed in adult and pediatric intensive care units. Analysis of the data was made using Pearson correlations to determine the relationship between the dependent variables of job satisfaction and intent to stay and multiple independent variables. Regression analysis was then completed to find the measures that impacted the job satisfaction and intent to stay the greatest. The findings suggested that job satisfaction and intent to stay in a position were not affected by nurse manager leadership style in this population. The nurse\u27s instead seemed to strive for more of their basic needs, which was found to be a factor in both job satisfaction and retention and suggests further research
