Penalized Orthogonal-Components Regression for Large p Small n Data
We propose a penalized orthogonal-components regression (POCRE) for large p
small n data. Orthogonal components are sequentially constructed to maximize,
upon standardization, their correlation to the response residuals. A new
penalization framework, implemented via empirical Bayes thresholding, is
presented to effectively identify sparse predictors of each component. POCRE is
computationally efficient owing to its sequential construction of leading
sparse principal components. In addition, such construction offers other
properties such as grouping highly correlated predictors and allowing for
collinear or nearly collinear predictors. With multivariate responses, POCRE
can construct common components and thus build up latent-variable models for

Novel Microscopic Mechanism of Intermixing during Growth on Soft Metallic Substrates
Generic computer simulations using empiric interatomic potentials suggest a new, collective mechanism that could be responsible for mixing at heteroepitaxial interfaces. Even if single adsorbate atoms diffuse by hopping on the substrate surface and do not mix at the terraces, two-dimensional islands formed by nucleation may become unstable above a certain critical size and explode upwards forming clusters of several atomic layers. This process is accompanied by strong distortions of the underlying atomic layers, and on soft materials it can result in surface etching and incorporation of substrate atoms into the islands.Fil: Gomez, Liliana Maria. Drag force in a string model dual to large-N QCD
We compute the drag force exerted on a quark and a di-quark systems in a
background dual to large-N QCD at finite temperature. We find that appears a
drag force in the former setup with flow of energy proportional to the mass of
the quark while in the latter there is no dragging as in other studies. We also

A Comparative Ultrastructural Study of Chondrosarcoma, Chordoid Sarcoma, and Chordoma
A morphologic and electron microscopic study was made of two chordoid sarcomas.
These lesions were compared with two classical chondrosarcomas and two chordomas.
These chondrosarcoma cells showed many features common to chondrocytes, such as
abundant RER, well-developed Golgi complexes, and microvillous cytoplasmatic
membranes. The chordoid sarcomas bore a close morphologic resemblance to the
chordomas but the ultrastructural features revealed a close relationship to the
chondrosarcomas. The chordoid sarcoma and chondrosarcoma cells had scalloped
cytoplasmatic membranes, variable amounts of glycogen, round or oval nuclei and
microfibrils, collagen, and electron-dense granules in the ground substance. The
chordoma was characterized by the presence of stellate and physalipherous cells,
as well as many transitional cells, with varying nuclear morphology; dilated and
irregular RER in contact with mitochondria and morphologically varied vacuoles
are the main features in the cytoplasm. This study suggests that chordoid sarcoma
represents a variety of the chondrosarcoma rather than a form of chordoma. These
findings also support the suggestion of Weiss that chordoid sarcoma is an
extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcom
Partial liquid ventilation improves lung function in ventilation-induced lung injury
Disturbances in lung function and lung mechanics are present after
ventilation with high peak inspiratory pressures (PIP) and low levels of
positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Therefore, the authors
investigated whether partial liquid ventilation can re-establish lung
function after ventilation-induced lung injury. Adult rats were exposed to
high PIP without PEEP for 20 min. Thereafter, the animals were randomly
divided into five groups. The first group was killed immediately after
randomization and used as an untreated control. The second group received
only sham treatment and ventilation, and three groups received treatment
with perfluorocarbon (10 mL x kg(-1), 20 mL x kg(-1), and 20 ml x kg(-1)
plus an additional 5 mL x kg(-1) after 1 h). The four groups were
maintained on mechanical ventilation for a further 2-h observation period.
Blood gases, lung mechanics, total protein concentration, minimal surface
tension, and small/large surfactant aggregates ratio were determined. The
results show that in ventilation-induced lung injury, partial liquid
ventilation with different amounts of perflubron improves gas exchange and
pulmonary function, when compared to a group of animals treated with
standard respiratory care. These effects have been observed despite the
presence of a high intra-alveolar protein concentration, especially in
those groups treated with 10 and 20 mL of perflubron. The data suggest
that replacement of perfluorocarbon, lost over time, is crucial to
maintain the constant effects of partial liquid ventilation
Drag force in SYM plasma with B field from AdS/CFT
We investigate drag force in a thermal plasma of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory
via both fundamental and Dirichlet strings under the influence of non-zero NSNS
-field background. In the description of AdS/CFT correspondence the endpoint
of these strings correspondes to an external monopole or quark moving with a
constant electromagnetic field. We demonstrate how the configuration of string

The Energy of a Moving Quark-Antiquark Pair in an N=4 SYM Plasma
We make use of the AdS/CFT correspondence to determine the energy of an
external quark-antiquark pair that moves through strongly-coupled thermal N=4
super-Yang-Mills plasma, both in the rest frame of the plasma and in the rest
frame of the pair. It is found that the pair feels no drag force, has an energy
that reproduces the expected 1/L (or gamma/L) behavior at small quark-antiquark
separations, and becomes unbound beyond a certain screening length whose
velocity-dependence we determine. We discuss the relation between the
high-velocity limit of our results and the lightlike Wilson loop proposed

Energy Loss of Gluons, Baryons and k-Quarks in an N=4 SYM Plasma
We consider different types of external color sources that move through a
strongly-coupled thermal N=4 super-Yang-Mills plasma, and calculate, via the
AdS/CFT correspondence, the dissipative force (or equivalently, the rate of
energy loss) they experience. A bound state of k quarks in the totally
antisymmetric representation is found to feel a force with a nontrivial
k-dependence. Our result for k=1 (or k=N-1) agrees at large N with the one
obtained recently by Herzog et al. and Gubser, but contains in addition an
infinite series of 1/N corrections. The baryon (k=N) is seen to experience no
drag. Finally, a heavy gluon is found to be subject to a force which at large N
is twice as large as the one experienced by a heavy quark, in accordance with

Transmission of sheep-bovine spongiform encephalopathy to pigs
Experimental transmission of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent has been successfully reported in pigs inoculated via three simultaneous distinct routes (intracerebral, intraperitoneal and intravenous). Sheep derived BSE (Sh-BSE) is transmitted more efficiently than the original cattle-BSE isolate in a transgenic mouse model expressing porcine prion protein. However, the neuropathology and distribution of Sh-BSE in pigs as natural hosts, and susceptibility to this agent, is unknown. In the present study, seven pigs were intracerebrally inoculated with Sh-BSE prions. One pig was euthanized for analysis in the preclinical disease stage. The remaining six pigs developed neurological signs and histopathology revealed severe spongiform changes accompanied by astrogliosis and microgliosis throughout the central nervous system. Intracellular and neuropil-associated pathological prion protein (PrPSc) deposition was consistently observed in different brain sections and corroborated by Western blot. PrPSc was detected by immunohistochemistry and enzyme immunoassay in the following tissues in at least one animal: lymphoid tissues, peripheral nerves, gastrointestinal tract, skeletal muscle, adrenal gland and pancreas. PrPSc deposition was revealed by immunohistochemistry alone in the retina, optic nerve and kidney. These results demonstrate the efficient transmission of Sh-BSE in pigs and show for the first time that in this species propagation of bovine PrPSc in a wide range of peripheral tissues is possible. These results provide important insight into the distribution and detection of prions in non-ruminant animals
Spacelike strings and jet quenching from a Wilson loop
We investigate stationary string solutions with spacelike worldsheet in a
five-dimensional AdS black hole background, and find that there are many
branches of such solutions. Using a non-perturbative definition of the jet
quenching parameter proposed by Liu et. al., hep-ph/0605178, we take the
lightlike limit of these solutions to evaluate the jet quenching parameter in
an N=4 super Yang-Mills thermal bath. We show that this proposed definition
gives zero jet quenching parameter, independent of how the lightlike limit is
taken. In particular, the minimum-action solution giving the dominant
contribution to the Wilson loop has a leading behavior that is linear, rather
