    Turbofan forced mixer-nozzle internal flowfield. Volume 2: Computational fluid dynamic predictions

    A general program was conducted to develop and assess a computational method for predicting the flow properties in a turbofan forced mixed duct. The detail assessment of the resulting computer code is presented. It was found that the code provided excellent predictions of the kinematics of the mixing process throughout the entire length of the mixer nozzle. The thermal mixing process between the hot core and cold fan flows was found to be well represented in the low speed portion of the flowfield

    This PhD thesis focuses on the power to appeal of the public prosecutor against the acquittal. Within an historical perspective, the Author starts with an analysis of the issues related to the overturning of the acquittal given by the first-instance judge, rendered without a direct assessment of the oral evidence. This analysis has been also carried out through the decisions rendered by the European Court of Human Right and the Italian Supreme Court, trying to underline the progressive compliance of the Italian jurisprudence to the European one. In this scenario, the main principle ruled by the Italian Supreme Court requires the Court of Appeal the renewal of the trial evidentiary hearing, when the evidence provided for the acquittal by the first-instance judge have been re-evaluated to prove the guilty. After the reconstruction of the legal and case-law framework, this thesis offers some insights on the relationship between the overturning mechanism and the rights of defense and on the nature of the Appeal

    Hormone-sensitive cyclic GMP-inhibited cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase in rat adipocytes. Regulation of insulin- and cAMP-dependent activation by phosphorylation.

    In 32PO4-labeled adipocytes, isoproterenol (ISO) or physiologically relevant concentrations of insulin rapidly increased phosphorylation of a particulate 135-kDa protein which has been identified as a cGMP-inhibited "low Km" cAMP phosphodiesterase (CGI-PDE) by several criteria, including selective immunoprecipitation with anti-CGI-PDE IgG (Degerman, E., Smith, C.J., Tornqvist, H., Vasta, V., Belfrage, P., and Manganiello, V.C. (1990) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 87, 533-537). The time courses and concentration dependences for phosphorylation of CGI-PDE by ISO and insulin correlated with CGI-PDE activation in the presence of these agents; effects of ISO were somewhat more rapid than those of insulin. Adenosine deaminase, which metabolizes the adenylate cyclase inhibitor adenosine, also rapidly induced phosphorylation and activation of CGI-PDE. Phenylisopropyladenosine (an adenosine deaminase-resistant adenosine analog) prevented or reversed both adenosine deaminase-stimulated phosphorylation and activation of CGI-PDE (IC50 approximately 0.2 nM). Incubation of adipocytes with 0.1 nM insulin in the presence of ISO rapidly produced 30-200% greater activation and phosphorylation of CGI-PDE than the expected added effects of insulin and ISO individually; both effects preceded the insulin-induced decreases in protein kinase A activity and inhibition of lipolysis. These and other results indicate that CGI-PDE can be phosphorylated at distinct sites and activated by cAMP-dependent and insulin-dependent serine kinase(s), that the activation state of CGI-PDE reflects its relative phosphorylation state, and that synergistic phosphorylation/activation of CGI-PDE may be important in the antilipolytic action of insulin

    Convergence Acceleration for Multistage Time-Stepping Schemes

    The convergence of a Runge-Kutta (RK) scheme with multigrid is accelerated by preconditioning with a fully implicit operator. With the extended stability of the Runge-Kutta scheme, CFL numbers as high as 1000 could be used. The implicit preconditioner addresses the stiffness in the discrete equations associated with stretched meshes. Numerical dissipation operators (based on the Roe scheme, a matrix formulation, and the CUSP scheme) as well as the number of RK stages are considered in evaluating the RK/implicit scheme. Both the numerical and computational efficiency of the scheme with the different dissipation operators are discussed. The RK/implicit scheme is used to solve the two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In two dimensions, turbulent flows over an airfoil at subsonic and transonic conditions are computed. The effects of mesh cell aspect ratio on convergence are investigated for Reynolds numbers between 5.7 x 10(exp 6) and 100.0 x 10(exp 6). Results are also obtained for a transonic wing flow. For both 2-D and 3-D problems, the computational time of a well-tuned standard RK scheme is reduced at least a factor of four
