Objective: Evaluate routine alterations in patients submitted to treatment of unilateral fractures of the mandibular condyle. Patients and methods: The sample consisted of 30 patients of both sexes submitted to surgical and nonsurgical treatment. All patients answered an evaluation questionnaire on perception of the Oral Impact on Daily Performances (OIDP) and underwent physical and imaging examination. The following aspects were evaluated in temporo mandibular join (TMJ) physical examination: maximum mouth opening, left/right lateral movements and protrusive movements. Vertical height measurements of right and left mandibular branches were evaluated by means of orthopantomography. Lateromedial and anteroposterior displacements were measured using Hirtz?s axial radiography. Evaluation of diameter of the mandibular fossa and height of the glenoid fossa were measured by hypocycloidal tomography. Results: A minority (13.3%) answered the questions on OIDP positively, with a similar rate for both treatments. With regard to the vertical height variable, average vertical height was similar for both treatments. However, comparing fractured and nonfractured sides, the difference observed was statistically significant for both treatments. On the basis of the statistical results of this study, for both treatments there were no significant alterations in the maximum mouth opening variable, with an average of 43.35 mm for open treatment and 44 mm for closed treatment. Conclusion: In the present study there were no significant differences between open and closed treatment of unilateral fractures of the mandibular condyle

http://dx.doi.org/10.5902/217976928322Aim: to analyze stressful situations of nurses working in a university hospital. Method: cross-sectional study that used a part of a data bank from a master dissertation regarding the topic. The sample consisted of 73 nurses of a university hospital in the city of Recife, Pernambuco. Information about stressful work situations were collected through the summarized version of the Scale of Karasek (Job Stress Scale). For data analysis we used the chi-square test and Fisher exact test. Results: only the job sector had a statistically significant association with exposure to stressful situations (p-value = 0.05). Conclusions: obtained results suggest that nurses experience stressful work situations. However, it is recommended to conduct further studies to obtain more representative estimates, which explore occupational stress and other factors not addressed in this study. Pain control after surgery is one of the factors concern of surgical specialties. Aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the efficacy of nimesulide 100 mg and dipyrone monohydrate 500 mg used after extractions performed by a maxillofacial surgery UFPI services in order to support the drug choice appropriately, prioritizing the analgesic effect needed to patients undergoing interventions. Forty patients underwent extractions in the clinic of the UFPI, in the Health Center Poty Velho and Emergency Hospital of Promorar. Patients were divided into groups: undergoing intervention with and without ostectomy. Dipyrone monohydrate 500 mg or nimesulide 100 mg produced by compounding pharmacy, were prescribed for patients randomly, featuring a blind study. The intensity of pain after the extraction was assessed by patients using a visual analogue scale, in a postoperative period of 72 hours at 24 hour intervals. There was no statistical variation between the analgesics studied during the 3 days postoperatively evaluated, considering the presence or absence of ostectomy as a modifier of the search. Analgesia effect of nimesulide was similar to dipyrone according to the present study
