Does harvesting affect the relative growth in Patella aspera Röding, 1798?

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) provide valuable information about growth and individual fitness on the population. LWRs are commonly used in studies on life history, population dynamics, ecosystem modelling and stock assessment. A comparative study on the effect of harvesting in the relative growth of Patella aspera between Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and exploited areas was conducted in the archipelago of Madeira (NE Atlantic Ocean). The results showed that populations from the exploited areas exhibited a negative allometric growth whilst the populations from the MPAs showed predominantly isometric and positive allometric growth. The effects of protection from MPAs on the populations of P. aspera were not only restricted to an increase in mean size but also in a more balanced growth. This study highlight the importance of MPAs in the preservation of P. aspera populations in Madeira archipelago. Hence, these results should be used to corroborate the positive effects of MPAs in safeguarding the exploited resources, especially in oceanic islands were species are more prone to over-exploitation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Spontaneous spinal epidural haematoma due to arteriovenous malformation in a child

    Get PDF
Spontaneous spinal epidural haematoma (SSEH) is a rare clinical entity, especially in infants, in whom only a few cases have been reported. In a paediatric emergency setting, SSEH should be considered as part of the differential diagnosis for acute extremity weakness and paraesthesia. Epidural vascular malformations are often suspected in these cases but have rarely been demonstrated. The authors report herein a case of SSEH in a 9-year-old boy arising from an epidural vascular malformation. He initially presented with sudden intense cervicodorsal pain followed by hypotonic lower extremities and progressive motor weakness, with no sensory change. The MRI showed an acute extradural haematoma extending from C7 to T4 with compression of the spinal cord. After submission to decompression surgery, he presented full recovery in 1 month. The histopathological analysis revealed a vascular malformation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Effect of Vapour Bubble Initial Displacement on Droplet Impact onto Liquid Films

    Get PDF
Heat and mass transfer mechanisms regarding droplet impact have been extensively studied for dry surfaces, and in terms of droplet evaporation/combustion during free-fall. On the contrary, the droplet impact phenomena onto heated liquid films is a topic overlooked in the literature and requires further understanding in terms of hydrodynamics and phase change. Therefore, this work focuses on numerically simulating droplet impact onto liquid films in the presence of vapour bubbles. The crown height, diameter and overall development are analysed as a function of the position of the bubble related to the axis of symmetry. Results show that the crown overall growth is affected if the vapour bubbles detach and contact the crown wall. The size of the vapour bubbles also influences the detachment from the surface.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologiainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cyanobacteria phylogenetic studies reveal evidence for polyphyletic genera from thermal and freshwater habitats

Cyanobacteria are among the most diverse morphological microorganisms that inhabit a great variety of habitats. Their presence in the Azores, a volcanic archipelago of nine islands in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, has already been reported. However, due to the high diversity of cyanobacteria habitats, their biodiversity is still understudied, mainly in extreme environments. To address this, a total of 156 cyanobacteria strains from Azores lakes, streams, thermal and terrestrial habitats were isolated. Identification was made based on a polyphasic approach using classical taxonomy (morphological characteristics and environmental data) and phylogeny among 81 strains assessed by maximum likelihood and Bayesian analysis of 16S rDNA partial sequences. The 156 isolates showed a high genera diversity (38) belonging to the orders Chroococcales, Nostocales, Oscillatoriales, and Synechococcales. Eleven new genera for the Azores habitats are here reported, reinforcing that cyanobacteria biodiversity in these islands is still much understudied. Phylogenetic analysis showed 14 clusters associated with these cyanobacteria orders, with evidence for six new genera and valuable information towards Microchaete/Coleospermum taxonomic revision that better reflects species environmental distribution. These results emphasize the need for cyanobacteria taxonomy revisions, through polyphasic studies, mainly in Synechococcales order and in the Microchaete/Coleospermum, Nostoc, and Anabaena genera.Rita Cordeiro was supported by a Ph.D. grant (M3.1.a/F/017/2015) from the Fundo Regional da Ciência e Tecnologia (FRCT).
