    The influence of Fe2O3 doping on the pore structure and mechanical strength of TiO2-containing alumina obtained by freeze-casting

    This work investigated TiO/FeO doped alumina prepared by the freeze-casting technique and using camphene as the solvent. Dendritic pores were formed in the TiO doped alumina, a structure conferred by the frozen camphene. Contrary to this trend, further FeO doping of TiO-containing alumina resulted in the formation of non-dendritic structures. This behavior was attributed to the higher density of α-FeO (5.24 g cm) when compared to α-AlO (3.95 g cm) and anatase TiO (3.89 g cm), which reduced critical solidification front velocity, thus forming material with different pore shape. FeO doping also improved the densification of TiO-alumina and inhibited the formation of cracks, reflected by superior mechanical strength with best results ∼150% higher for 10% FeO loaded samples as compared to TiO-alumina samples

    Effect of titania addition on the properties of freeze-cast alumina samples

    This work investigated the behavior of TiO2-containing α-Al2O3 samples prepared by the freeze-casting technique. Camphene and liquid nitrogen were used as the solvent and cooling fluid, respectively. Camphene resulted in the formation of dendritic pores, in the direction of the freeze-casting cold front during sample preparation. The formation of β-Al2TiO5 phase occurred at 1300°C, and became more evident as the sintering temperatures reached 1500°C. The TiO2 loading did not affect the sample porosity at a given temperature, but it was detrimental in the case of mechanical properties under certain conditions. For instance, the flexural strength slightly improved with increasing the TiO2 loading and sintering temperature from 1100 to 1300°C. This effect was attributed to the occurrence of a more effective sintering of alumina. However, as the heat treatment temperature was raised from 1300 to 1500°C, the flexural strength did not increase as a function of the TiO2 loading, even though the densification occurred with loss of porosity. The loss of mechanical strength was found to be associated with the formation of microcracks which stemmed from the formation of β-Al2TiO5 phase for TiO2 loadings in excess of 4wt% at these high sintering temperatures

    The determination of physical properties is an important factor in the design of machinery and the scaling of post-harvest operations. The present study evaluates the influence of the level of roasting and the size of grinding on the physical properties of coffee during storage. The following physical properties were evaluated: true and bulk density, and intergranular porosity. Raw coffee beans (Coffea canephora and Coffea arabica), hulled and dried, were roasted to two different levels: medium light (SCAA#65) and moderately dark (SCAA#45). The beans were then grinded into three different sizes: fine (0.59 mm), medium (0.84 mm) and coarse (1.19 mm). An additional coffee lot was kept whole. Following grinding, samples were stored at two different temperatures (10 and 30 ºC) and analyzed after five different storage durations (0, 30, 60, 120 and 180 days). The medium light roast had higher values for each of the measured physical properties. Finely ground samples had higher true and bulk densities, and porosities. It is concluded that the size of grinding, level of roasting and duration of storage significantly affect the physical properties of coffee.A determinação das propriedades físicas é fator importante na formulação de projetos de maquinários e dimensionamento de operações pós-colheita. De forma a permitir o dimensionamento correto e o uso desses maquinários, objetivou-se avaliar e determinar, durante o armazenamento, as propriedades físicas: massa específica unitária e aparente e porosidade intergranular, além de avaliar a influência dos níveis de torrefação e moagem sobre essas propriedades. Grãos de café cru (Coffea canephora e Coffea arabica) foram utilizados, descascados e secados e só então torrados em dois níveis: média clara (SCAA#65) e moderadamente escura (SCAA#45). Os grãos foram moídos em três granulometrias: fina (0,59 mm), média (0,84 mm) e grossa (1,19 mm), além do lote de café inteiro. Realizada a moagem as amostras foram armazenadas em duas temperaturas (10 e 30 ºC) e analisadas em cinco tempos distintos de armazenamento (0, 30, 60, 120 e 180 dias). A torra média clara permitiu maiores valores das propriedades físicas; já as amostras de granulometria fina apresentaram aumento das massas específica unitária e aparente e porosidade.     In this work it is carried out a review on structural parameters related to the evaluation of pore connectivity of nanostructures. The work describes parameters and methods of evaluation of geometric parameters. The concepts of connectivity are applied to silica gels and glasses obtained from sol-gel process. The study of pores connectivity was carried out using a combination of geometric modeling and experimental evaluation of specific surface area and pore volume. The permeability of the pore structure is evaluated and a permeability geometric factor, Pg, is proposed

    Synthesis of Titania-Silica Materials by Sol-Gel

    In this work TiO2-SiO2 glasses containing as much as 20 mol % of TiO2 were prepared via sol-gel process using titanium and silicon alkoxides, in the presence of chlorine, in the form of titanium tetrachloride or HCl. The gels were heat-treated until 800 &deg;C. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to understand the structural properties of TiO2-SiO2 oxides calcined at different temperatures and to evaluate the homogeneity of these materials. The degree of the compactness of the silica network is inferred from the frequency of the asymmetric stretching vibrations of Si-O-Si bonds. Formation of Si-O-Ti bridges, as monitored by the intensity of characteristic 945 cm-1 <FONT FACE=Symbol>&frac34;</FONT> 960 cm-1 vibration, is particularly prominent if the method of basic two-step prehydrolysis of silicon alkoxide, addition of titanium alkoxide and completion of hydrolysis was used

    Obtention of nanostructured silica glass by sol-gel process with incorporation of lead compounds

    The methodology of obtention of nanostructured glass, incorporated with lead compounds, obtained by sol-gel processing and the structural characterizations are presented. Specific surface area, porosity, pore morphology and pore size distributions of the gels were characterized with nitrogen sorption (BET) and mercury pycnometry. The pore size distributions of gels obtained using lead nitrate were more narrow than the ones observed for gels made with lead acetate. It was also observed the presence of a bimodal pore size distribution for gels produced using lead nitrate

    Optical characterization of sol-gel glasses derived from Eu3+ complex-forming precursors

    Fabrication of new optical devices based upon the incorporation of rare earth ions via sol-gel methods depends on elimination of dopant ion clusters and residual hydroxyl groups from the final material. The optical absorption and/or luminescence properties of luminescent rare earth ions are influenced by the local bonding environment and the distribution of the rare-earth dopants in the matrix. Typically, dopants are incorporated into gel via dissolution of soluble species into the initial precursor sol. In this work, Eu3+ is used as optical probe, to assess changes in the local environment. Results of emission, excitation, fluorescence line narrowing and lifetimes studies of Eu3+-doped gels derived from Si(OCH3)4 and fluorinated/chelate Eu3+ precursors are presented. The precursors used in the sol-gel synthesis were: tris (6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedionate) Eu(III), Eu (III) trifluoromethanesulfonate, Eu(III) acetylacetonate hydrate, Eu (III) trifluoroacetate trihidrate, tris (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5- heptanedionate) Eu(III) and Eu(NO3)3.6H2O. The results were interpreted in terms of the evolution of the Eu3+ fluorescence in systems varying from solution to the gels densified to 800ºC. The lifetimes studies indicate that the fluorinated precursors are effective at reducing the water content in densified gels
